Nostrand and Park Place?
Thoughts on this general vicinity? I know a girl who moved up by me cause around New Years she was living at St Marks and Nostrand and waked home to find a blood bath -- gunshots, I think-- literally puddles of blood from gang shootout. Totally sketched out, don't want a situation like this but I am seeing lots of places on Nostrand and Rogers right now. Thoughts?

Have her look at the lovely mural of death on the side of the candy store.
-
Thats all I needed to hear, thanks
-
your gang shoot out on St. Marks is just drug kids shooting drug kids. Its gotten alot better this last year. That Mural of death....old stuff. the side streets are getting better and even Nostrand isnt so bad anymore. I;ve lived here for 3 yrs and its gotten alot better and I thing st. Marks is pretty quiet these days.

It is difficult to figure out if the crime is worse on my block or that block, and I don't want to chance it.
-
I love on St .Johns and Nostrand. If you can make it there, well....you know how the song goes.
-
I live on New York and Bergen but spend a lot of time around that part of Nostrand. It's not uncommon for me to be walking home from Eastern parkway at 12 or 1 am and I've never felt threatened aside from maybe one or two minor incidents. It's really not bad. Just be aware of your surroundings, take off your iPod, etc., ect...
-
I really love New York Ave.
-
i'm sorry you have to keep moving!
-
tell me about it! thank you. i've been seriously hunting since july 1st and haven't found anything reasonable for two plutonic roommates that is cat-friendly. it's so disheartening. we don't make tons of money so we are really limited.

The mural of death is highly exaggerated. Most of the deaths listed on there are from years ago. That said, the Nostrand/NY block is a quieter block (with the exception of the actual corner of Nostrand) than the Rodgers/Nostrand block. Chalk that up to the difference between many owner-occupied one & two family houses with long-time residents vs. a block made up almost entirely of apartment buildings and a school. Park at Rodgers/Bedford is a short block with only an handful of buildings on each side, so that's pretty quiet as well.
The Park and Nostrand intersection has been home to skywatch 2-3 times in the last couple of years, but most of the drama on that corner comes from 1) girlfights of epic proportions 2) Friday and Saturday night fisticuffs from the two social clubs which were within 400 ft of that intersection (both of which seem to have closed down in the last twelve months) and 3) drama between the local corner boys and their customers. Based on my personal observation as long as you are not sleeping with some little chickenheaded girl's man, throwing back Henny at Cafe 400 at 3am or trying to buy drugs on credit you should be ok. -

Damn.throwing back Henny at Cafe 400 at 3am
Damn.or trying to buy drugs on credit
Damn.you should be ok.
Woohoo! -
The fighting I've seen is mostly when there is a growing group of teens hanging around. Sometimes that gets pretty loud and a little tense, but its always been in a group of people, and people always jump in and hold the fighters apart - but there can be a lot of yelling.
But it seems that the particular buildings that the teens cluster around changes a bit - for awhile it will be pretty crowded and loud around a particular building, then pretty quiet and folks seem to move on to a new location.
I've never had a problem here and generally like living in this neighborhood, and like my neighbors. -
Well, I am glad to hear that.

I used to live right accross the street from the M.O.D., and can vouch for the fact that most of its postings were from the years of the Crack Wars.but most of the drama on that corner comes from 1) girlfights of epic proportions
You got that right, every now and then it would be like the wild west, but with women instead of cowboys, and tumbleweave instead of tumbleweed.3) drama between the local corner boys and their customers.
This is where the problems occurred, it wasn't just the customers either, it was with competitors as well. These kids don't care who or what they shoot up, and I got tired of calling in gunshots every night. -
The Mural of Death has no more space for new entries, ask this guy.
Brooklyn: Man Is Fatally Stabbed

An unidentified homeless man was found unconscious on a street corner in Crown Heights on Saturday night and later died from a stab wound, the police said yesterday. The man was found shortly before 7 p.m. at Nostrand Avenue and Park Place, the police said. Area residents said yesterday that he was a fixture in the neighborhood, and that he was seen harassing passers-by on Saturday. A spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office said yesterday that the man had died of a stab wound to the groin, with vascular injuries. The police searched for witnesses in the area last night.
Or this guy.....
MURDER in Crown Heights (77th Precinct)
ON 2/12/08 AT APPROXIMATELY 1807 HRS AT 594 PARK PLACE, CONFINES OF THE 77 PCT, POLICE RESPONDED TO A CALL OF AN UNCONSCIOUS MALE AT THE LOCATION. UPON ARRIVAL POLICE DISCOVERED A MALE LYING FACE UP ON THE BEDROOM FL WITH A STAB WOUND TO THE HEAD. NO ARREST. THE INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING.
DOA:
MURAT ST. HILAIRE M/B/55
594 PARK PLACE -
You might want to put both of those stories in context. The first occurred almost two years ago.
The second didn't occur anywhere near Nostrand. The location of that killing was in a house on the Classon/Franklin block, and actually occurred inside the gentleman's apartment.
Its not the best corner in the neighborhood, but lets keep the hyperbole to a minimum. -
594 park pl is between classon and franklin - different area. The other one is from 2 yrs ago which in this area is a really long time. There's been a tremendous amount of change for the better in the last 2 years.
Shit still goes down here as it does in every neighborhood in brooklyn, maybe a little more in this specific area but it's not a war zone, don't make it out to be one. Posting this type of stuff is just fear mongering. Why not post safety tips? That does a lot more good than just scare people away.
It sounds like you'd rather everyone leave so we can give just turn the hood over to the dealers and thugs. -
I'm well aware of the location of 594 park place. Every person that was killed on that wall, wasn't killed directly in front of that mural. I'm not trying to instill fear, I simpley answered a question about that block, I didnt even add my two cents. That block is probably one of the worst blocks in the 77 Precinct. If I remember correctly 2 people were shot on that block last year, I believe it was a mother and son combo. Also,I've posted numerous safety tips on this board, unfortunately it seems most them fall on deaf ears.

That's 'cause yer postings tend to have the tone of EVERYTHING SUCKS HERE, IT IS A HELLHOLE and the denizens of the area don't particularly appreciate it. Having said that, I know that I personally have learned more than one thing from you, including specific safety skills that I utilize daily. So thanks for that.

Trust me, I'm on that stretch of Park btwn Classon and Franklin all the time. The corkscrew murder was a shocking aberration compared to what's usually going down on that block.

And folks, that is the murder that prompted me to leave, well that and the shooting that occurred weeks prior to this stabbing. My boyfriend was on his way to the subway during rush hour when people started shooting. Seriously, late 2006 saw a rash of shootings and I could not leave my place fast enough. Despite the fact that both my landlord and my apartment were awesome. I hope it has calmed some in the time since.

Yes, that was a pretty nasty mess all right. But consider that in the 90's, two street crime plain clothes cops rode up on bikes to a suspicious guy on the corner of Park Place and Nostrand. The guy made the mistake of pulling a gun on them (according to the police report). The cops responded not only by killing him but also a pedestrian up the street in front of the Korean green grocer. As a white guy who rode his bike in the area a lot, this made quite an impression upon me.
Have times changed? Well, I'm still here, riding my bike around, except rather than just working over here, I live over here as well. And yes, that wall of shame has been there the whole time. Just a lot fewer entries lately.
Frankly KWOC it's just that you're such a downer all the time. I'd much rather see you spend your time patrolling the streets. Anyone who walks around the n'hood can see the problems, even with Ipod stuck on his head. -
I'm sorry being a realist is such a "downer", maybe the Cops should put their heads in the sand also.

FWIW, being constantly negative and being a realist are _not_ the same thing. There are definitely positive things in the area, just as there are the negative. You seem to choose to see only the negative. *shrug*
Glass is half full, glass is half empty. Of course you tend to be more of the -broken glass is littering the street, cutting the feet of small children- type.
-
I don't know, I think if I saw two people murdered on my block in the same year I'd be pretty bummed too.
Howdy, Stranger!
