Is This A Scam?
Some guy knocked on my door. He wasn't in a suit and he had a quiet lady with him in business casual. He told me he was sent door to door to talk to customers about energy savings and ConEd. He was from the "Esco Company" or some bullshit and waved a badge at me. I was a flight above on my balcony. I told him I didn't want to talk to him and he said we were ignoring messages on the back of our bills. I pulled out my gas bill and he said that he was talking about ConEd. So I asked him what name was on the ConEd bill and he didn't know so I said no thanks. He got kinda aggro at me but I kind of feel like it had to be some sort of scam to get my personal information or to see if we were home during the day to break into my house.
What do you think? Does this sound legit to anyone?

they been doing this for a long time they are trying to trick you into switching your energy provider or whatever. leave those people alone. why do you even answer your door if you aren't expecting someone? I don't.

I had this also, I told them no thanks and please do not solicit me again. The man was very nice and said no problem. Rule of thumb for me - never give them any information whatsoever.

rule of thumb : DO NOT ANSWER YOUR DOOR IF YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING ANYONE!

No need to shout - -
I looked out my window, probably shouldn't have. Thanks so much.

Totally a scam. They came to our place last summer, I told them to get lost.

There was definitely a thread about this somewhere on the Prospect or Crown Heights board a few months ago. Don't give out info to strangers.

i actually don't think it is a scam. well, okay, this guy could have been scamming, but on the whole I think it is legit.
an esco is an Energy Services COmpany. con ed has a program where you can elect not to buy your electricity from con ed and instead get it from an esco. I think for the most part they all provide green energy. there are some perks for enrolling, like a guarantee of a lower bill for the first 2 months and you dont have to pay state tax either. -
ESCOs are legit but it's not to say that some of their sales people aren't a bit shady. There was an article in the Times this past weekend about some of them that sell via a multi-level marketing model. You can read the article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/01/nyregion/01ambit.html?scp=2&sq=esco&st=cse

I mean, dude showed up at my door with some random lady who didn't say anything and kept getting mad when I thought he was a scammer! It wasn't very professional and some badge doesn't mean shit to me even if he was trying to "help me save money on my electric bill"
I told him to send me something in the mail, but he just got annoyed and left. -
