Where do the gays go????? — Brooklynian

Where do the gays go?????

I'm new to the neighborhood. And I love it so far. There's just one thing I need to know...Where can I find the gays? Is there a local gay friendly spot(s) in the area? I'd rather not go to Williamsburg or Park Slope.

  • go to the West Indian parade tomorrow or Frank's on a Saturday night.
make sure you wave your rainbow flag

nah j/p go to two steps down or rockwell's or tonight the house jam in the park. there is also a bar on nostrand starlight lounge i think it is
  • Two steps down? How 1992 of you! And is Rockwell's still open? Langston's on Atlantic just east of the S train overpass and Chocolate (?) at Waverly and Park have catered to the African-American crowd (or so I've been told, and I am not even sure if they are still open). We lost the best place this summer - Grand 275. Outpost Cafe on Fulton at Irving is gay-owned and has random gay parties, but I don't think has really gotten bar-ish (they only have a beer/wine license).

Seems to be a lacuna in the scene around here. Maybe one of the bodegas on Fulton can be converted into a new gay bar.

P.S. Given the unfortunate rep of homophobia in the West Indies, and the chilling accounts of murders of gays in Jamaica in particular, I am not sure that even (good-natured?) ribbing about how certain areas in Brooklyn are physically dangerous for openly gay people is in good taste.

Two Steps Down still full of gay boys and yes Rockwells is still open. Matter of fact you should make sure and go next Sunday. Thats the best night.
  • Wow where are Two Steps Down and Rockwells?

  • Rockwell's is on Rockwell Place off Dekalb. Two Step's Down is on Dekalb next to the Alibi, Ici and Tilly's. I am very surprised to hear that the latter is still a gay spot, in that I've lived in the neighborhood for 10 years, have a rather diverse group of friends and no one has ever mentioned it. I did go there way back in the early 90s when the hood was very different, and when it was a casual dining/pub location. Perhaps it has a stalwart clientele still attending from that time? Rockwell's and Langston's are more in the Starlight mode (overwhelmingly African-American). I'm really old (in my 40s!) and so haven't checked them out in years.

Yes alot of the old school people still go to Two Steps. It is not exclusively a gay spot but alot of gays go there.

Now WTF is "overwhelmingly African American" supposed to mean?

If I said Fort Greene and Clinton Hill have become overwhelmingly caucasian, the entire board would descend upon me like the birds.

    Steupse.
  • Langston's is open?!?

I thought they shuttered years back. The sign's down and I haven't seen a crowd outside (used to all the time) in ages.

Sigh. I was going to write "predominantly" African-American, but I decided that would understate the demographics. If you understood that to mean I or someone else would be "overwhelmed" by the numbers of African Americans you misread it. To me it was simply a description somewhere between "predominantly" and "universally." No offense intended...

If you wrote that Clinton Hill had become "overwhelmingly" caucasian (sic), you would be wrong. As far as Fort Greene, I guess it depends on what YOU mean by overwhelming. It certainly isn't majority white.

I was pretty overwhelmed (other meaning of the word) by the new yogurt spot on Fulton neat Habana Outpost. Now if that's not a sign of the times, I don't know what it.

Hmm. Really does highlight how many different communities are occupying the same space without really even noticing. But I think what the original poster was looking for was something a bit more overt.

???? - Look JAH, from your thousand posts in the past few weeks, I pretty much think you're a loon - so I should know better than to engage you, but...WTF?

I live off Franklin. Lived there for 10 years. For a bunch of those years when coming home on the C train late I'd walk past Atlantic and there'd be people going to Langston's. And Langston's had a big sign over the door. Or I'd drive home late from dinner or be riding back home in a cab and there'd be a crowd of folks smoking or waiting on line outside of said Langston's.

For the past year or so - no sign - no crowds. Looks closed. So what's 1992 about that? What the hell happened in 1992?
  • I think he's referring to my post where I used that line about him talking about Two Steps Down. (Which is the last time I went to Two Steps Down.)

Langston's is still there and going strong. Walk past there late on a Saturday night and you'll see the crowds and people.

    Thanks for the news.
  • Subject: Chocolate Bar

The Chocolate Bar on Waverly and Washington has a gay night on Fridays. The bar itself is pretty cool, but sometimes the crowd can be sparse.

Two Steps Down? Next to Alibi? I didn't even realize there was a place there, much less that it was gay. I'll have to check it out.
