Doggy Beach Danger?
Has anyone else's dog's been sick in the last few weeks? Our dog was in the blue for a week or two, and was frequenting the beach until the vet told me (begged me) to avoid a swim in what is apparently a rat poison, bird dropping, algae infested water hole.

I am beginning to believe the doggy beach is just no good.

That's a bummer. One of our dog's favorite spots.

Yeah believe it.. that doggie beach is a NO destination. I know the news is new for some people but dog owners who use the park have known this for a long time. No kidding you want your dog to get wet.... try your own bathtub!

Hard to swim in the bathtub, but the point is taken.

My son has a Portie and Ralphie loves to swim anywhere. He has had the Lepto vacine because they travel with the dog and he goes in to many lakes around the country. Probably none of them are as likely to cause a problem as the dog beach in the park and I am so sad to even have to say that. But bottom line.. keep your dogs out of this water.

Just to make the point.. infection with this disease does not cause the "blues"... It can be fatal to your dog! If your pet succumbs to this Lepto thing you will know it.. unfortunately... because you will have a very sick buddy there.

i used to take my dog there all the time but have stopped since discovering it was the doggie beach water that was causing her UTI's
hate to say that but.... -
Am I the only one who thinks this is absolutely terrible of the Prospect Park Rangers? WHY ARE THEY USING POISON IF THEY ENCOURAGE DOGS TO SWIM THERE EVERYDAY??????????? Why don’t the Rangers just go there between 1AM and Dusk (the hours it’s illegal for people to be in the park) and set up rat traps??? They could remove the traps by Dusk, and none of the Dogs get poisoned.

Subject: doggy beach: parasite danger
quite a few dogs have been infected with giardia after swimming or drinking the water at doggy beach. difficult to eradicate, costly to treat, uncomfortable and possibly dangerous for your dog. -
Yankeefan you are not the only one who thinks this putting out poison is a terrible idea. If anyone thought they would just take a chance and let their dog get in this water before now they are risking that their dog will be poisoned as well. Perhaps it is a manpower thing because that means someone would be responsible to putting out the traps for the forbidden hours and going back to remove the traps before the permited hours started.

Don't forget to watch out for the puddles if you're worried about the beach. I see tons of dogs peeing and even pooping the big puddles that tend to linger. Surely those are concentrated basins of germs if the beach is.
I agree that traps would be better than poison. Or maybe relocate a TNR cat colony into the fenced areas of the park (j/k)... -

That is exactly why I stopped bringing my human children to that part of Prospect Park. When they had little league the dog owners took such offence that we wanted to play. How do you expect a 6 year old to play baseball when they just watched a dog crap on the pitchers mound. -

I've also seen more than a few humans peeing in the park, most often children and human feces is not terribly uncommon as well.
Personally, I'm more worried about what I might catch as a human from all the rats. And if you don't think there are enough to worry about, you need to go out at night and take a close look--they are not confined to secluded areas.
