Quick take on Tavern on Dean
noisefootprint writes: "We really liked it. We sat in the back room and they played old R&B and the Beatles the whole time."
"I don't recommend the calamari appetizer -- rubbery, hard to bite through. He really liked his shell steak, though. I wasn't crazy about my catfish, but I'd still return to the place because the menu was better than I expected."

..vegetarian (vegan) options?
-
not sure about vegan, but i often get the vegetable platter and veggie burger. i've also had the beet salad. i think they also have a grilled veggie sandwich.
-
For the non-veggies: the steak sandwich is great.

alafairnadia introduced me to Tavern on Dean last week (not sure how I missed it for so many months.) I thought it was good -- service was a bit slow, but the food made up for it.

My fiance and I hang out here fairly often. We like to sit at the bar. There is a big group of regulars that are entertaining to be around.
Bartenders are great there. Food is above average. -
I agree with you Carnivoire (then again when do I not
)
I also like their Shrimp Scampi with linguini and their Crispy Asian Chicken Salad mmmm. -
Subject: get the fried chicken
My boyfriend and I go to Tavern on Dean a lot.
The waiters are nice. They have a good brunch. Good dinner. Not too crowded and they serve until 1-3am.
I haven't sat at the bar yet, but I hope to one day.
The food is pretty good. Had a great vodka gimlet on Saturday night.
The fried chicken is amazing.
And they introduced me to the smoked tabasco sauce.
For that, I will always be grateful. -
i love tavern on dean. i'm too poor to patronize it regularly, but it is a great space and is really mixed, which is awesome. And it's right down the block from me. We should happy hour it up there sometime.

I agree with the other posters. My wife and I always enjoy Tavern On Dean. We used to frequent Tavern on Jane, in Manhattan, and were thrilled when the Prospect Heights counterpart opened. The outdoor space in the summertime is especially nice. I wish that we had more pubs in the neighborhood.

I really like it as well. We enjoy the brunch there and the price is good.
Anybody know what the Horton Foote connection is? -
Two words: breakfast porkchop.
I like Tavern on Dean for showing off the neighborhood to guests, but I feel more comfortable at Purity. Avoid Tavern's homemade corned beef hash -- it was dry as leather. -

went there a while ago, food was decent enough, but I don't agree with the 17% service charge, which is included for every party (not just big parties). So I won't be returning... -
I prefer ToD as a bar. The food is decent (though inconsistent across the menu and across visits for the same item), but it is priced more like Manhattan than Prospect Heights. A great place to watch MNF over a burger and a beer, though.

Are you serious? It's not as cheap as pizza or carneviento, but the prices at Tavern on Dean are totally reasonable, expecially considering the enormous portions. What place in Manhattan charges just $1 extra to get a full size salad with an entree? -
Had dinner there last night, penna a la vodka for me, turkey burger for my friend. We enjoyed the food, but the service was painfully slow and it wasn't even that crowded. I had apple crisp for desert and was disappointed to find granola and walnuts in there instead of cake crumble. It's not like I have a nuts allergy but I would've liked a heads up that it wasn't the traditional style I was expecting. I would go back, maybe for beer and wings next time. Oh and about the 17% gratuity, that's what I would probably tip anyway, but given the slow service, I would've liked the option to determine how much to leave the server.

i love tavern on dean. after a long night of drinking, the brunch there is the only thing that revives me. As far as the service charge goes, I've always had great service there. I had one of the best waitresses ever one night at dinner. It was like 4 star treatment, but I haven't seen her since.
Also I ordered a cobb salad there...It was the size of 2 meals and good.
