question about the franklin Ave stop on the C — Brooklynian

question about the franklin Ave stop on the C

I just recently signed a lease to an apt close to the Franklin Ave Stop on the C. I haven't moved in yet and didn't really visit the place at night to see how it was.

Is the ride to and getting off the Franklin Ave stop safe around, say, 10 at night?

I'm a 5 foot 4 inches asian. I probably stick out in a majority African American community. Would that matter? We chose this area b/c someone told us it was more family residence here. Any opinions?

please any haters try to cook up their wittiest,"you don't belong here go back to china" jazz can posted on www.itouchlittleboys.com under the topic "i really do."

Thanks for reading,

  • i made up that link. but in this world it probably does exist. don't click on it b/c i think it'll give you a bad virus or get you on dateline:to catch a sex predator.
  • safety is all about you being aware of your surroundings. at least most of it.

where around the franklin C are you? north or south of atlantic? cross street?
  • pretty much putnam and franklin.
  • Hmmm, not sure about that specific area though I looked at a place at Putnam between Downing and Grand and turned it down. It seemed sketchy and when I checked on the boards a lot of convo came up about rampant drug dealing and the livery cab driver who was shot at around 7pm right there a few months ago.

If you search Putnam on the boards something will come up about that block.
  • That stop is fine. My friend (she's about 5'4" and Asian too!) has been living on the corner of Putnam & Franklin for years and has had no problems. The problem corner is Grand & Putnam. It's a good stop because you're convenient to walking a lot of places--grocery stores, laundry, family dollar, cafes, etc.

She also has a child and so do her neighbors in her building. They take their children to story hour at the library on Franklin and also there is some Bed Stuy Parents group she belongs to.
  • Well it is good to know it is a quasi-isolated problem, but still super sad that it is a problem at Putnam and Grand.
  • Subject: Not the worst neighborhood

I live at Gates & Franklin, so if I take the subway at night I often have to get off at this stop. I find that women have less problems in the neighborhood then men do. I'm Japanese/American woman in my early 20's. You should always watch your back, but there are almost always police present at the subway stop. This area is very diverse & people of all colors live here.

Things seem to happen in every neighborhood, not just this one so you really ought to be carefull anywhere you go, that is not to say you should be living in constant fear! I love my block and the diversity there.

Hey---I resemble that remark, We live on the corner of Putnam and Irving and have never had a problem (except for the semiannual shooting) it's a kind of schizophrenic block, for the most part it's safe, but when the druggies come off their medication it's wild west time. Seriously though, we're a sort of older white couple who say hello to all the neighbors who sit outside of the grand street apartment building, and as long as we keep our eyes open, have not felt that threatened by the neighborhood. The Franklin Ave. stop is quite busy all hours so I wouldn't worry about it.
  • Thanks for the reply ppl.
so at what point is it too late to take the C to the franklin stop (to the point i shoud just cab it)?

I lived in Harlem 3 years ago for an internship. It actually made it safer that there were alot of familys just hanging out on the street (assuming mugging happen only when there isn't alot of people around). Is it something similar at the Franklin stop?

Welcome to the neighborhood! I live in the area (Franklin & Greene) and also lived in Harlem for several years before moving here to Bed Stuy last year. I would say it's similar to Harlem, as far as families hanging out on the street, but perhaps a bit less so (e.g. quieter). I've never had a problem with anyone bothering me besides the occasional cat call (I'm a 20-something white female, btw). Just use your common sense. I normally take a cab home if it's past midnight, but that's just me.

I don't know that I'd say anytime is too unsafe as long as you're aware of your environment. I live south of Fulton (previously on Bergen/Franklin, now on Sterling/Franklin). I've come back pretty late around 2 a.m. or so or left early (catching the late night A local to JFK) around 5 a.m. or so. As long as you're not inebriated/unaware of your surroundings, there shouldn't be a problem.

If appearances and such matter, I'm a petite 5' south Asian.

Um.. wouldn't a "semiannual shooting" and "wild west time" count as having a problem?

I guess i'm just suffering from a little bit of buyer's remorse (renter's remorse?). i remember 3 hours after i signed the app, i started tapping my chin and thinking, "maybe too good...to be true..."

@halfpint, maratl2 and Randalew - I hope i didn't make this topic into creepy tell-me-how you-look post! I kinda made the assumption being a small asian added mugging points b/c a few years back in columbus, ohio a group of thugs decided to rob only me at a crowded bus stop. Crowded! only me! wtf!

    haha

Well sure I'm in denial, but I really like the neighborhood, there's some big plusses too, like hopping on the bus to BAM, the good restaurants, the good neighbors. I'm at work in 30 minutes, and when I come home I can stop at Outpost or Kush, sure beats Parsippany
  • Kevin--I am moving right around the corner from you (Irving between Putnam and Gates). Any thoughts about the Fulton BID and what effect if any that might have on the street life and sketchy aspects of the neighborhood? I am pretty well familiar with the area, having lived in Clinton Hill for 7 years now but just wanted you and/or Putnam Denizen to weigh in on how you guys think the area will shape up in the next couple of years and whether the Fulton BID will have any effect. Thanks!
  • I am really curious as to why so many cheap apartments in Clinton hill keep popping up on CL on Fulton St. Cause of the construction noise?
  • Fulton Street is just not the ideal street to live on. The construction is a huge turn off and has been going on for almost 2 years. Where there is no construction there is a ton of traffic and that makes pollution. When I lived a block off Fulton my windows were always filthy, including the sills and my curtains were completely sooty all the time. Once the construction is finished (if ever) there will be buses going both ways on Fulton every 3 minutes which is very loud.

I prefer it up around the Franklin stop than closer to Clinton-Washington. At least it's more lively with plenty of pedestrians. The stretch from about Saint James to Carlton always felt barren to me.
  • argh construction, I lived in Long island city when they were putting up all the high-rises. Nothing worst then waking up to the sound of a truck backing up "beep...beep...beep" at 7 in the morning on a saturday.

Oh, it can _always_ get worse...

  • like continuous construction 7am on saturday morning!!!!

asian female here as well - i've overslept on the train late at night and gotten out at franklin, drunk as a skunk. managed to walk safely home on fulton (i live near the clinton-wash stop) and got home fine, only to get yelled at by my worried housemate. i think you'll be okay.

if you're a little worried, i'd suggest taking care to be aware of your surroundings while exiting the train - like don't be listening to your ipod at full volume, etc.

like every neighborhood, it's got its shady characters but for the most part, it's great. and by shady i mean me :P

They're stalling on finishing the water, sewer and electric on Fulton till they have an idea of how big the Atlantic project is going to be. It's really annoying everyone. A couple of nice restaurants are struggling on Fulton because the streets are blocked, ugly and noisy. Once everything is in place it's inevitable that the commercial rents will triple. The buses will run again down Fulton and people will stop avoiding it. Don't know if the rising commercial rents will be good or bad but I would love for them to finish.
  • I live on Franklin Ave not too far North of that stop. To me its very safe. I'm a late 20s, average sized white guy. The neighborhood is very safe, as well as that stop. Like a few people have said, there is usually a very good police presence either in the station, or right outside. Another good thing is its got a 24 hr booth.

    Thanks for reading,
I don't think asians stick out much due to the large number of "chinese" restaurants around.

Not all asians come from China. :-)
