  • Subject: bococa - ugh!

doesn't everyone roundly dislike bococa? it was like one guy who created those neighborhood guides who coined it. blech!

    How about Hills and Garden?

Or how about just dropping the "BoCoCa Boards" part of the title.

And I'm still a little disappointed to find my boerum hill board has been taken over by the richies across smith street. ;) <kidding>

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME? I LIVE IN MICHIGAN AND I AM DOING RESEARCH ON OUR FAMILY (GRANDPARENTS WERE MARRIED IN BROOKLYN). THE NEWSPAPER GAVE THEIR ADDRESSES AS
522 HICKS STREET AND 99 JOHNSON STREET. I CAN'T FIND ANYONE WILLING TO FIND OUT IF THESE BUILDINGS STILL EXIST OR IF THEY HAVE BEEN RENOVATED OR IF SOME OTHER STRUCTURE IS THERE.

    GAIL
  • Hi Gail,

I don't live close enough to stop by either of these for you, but I looked on Google Maps.

    Here's a sattellite view of 522 Hicks:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?q=522+HICKS+STREET,+brooklyn,+ny&spn=0.003223,0.010274&t=h&iwloc=A&hl=en
Looks like there's nothing there, as far as I can tell.

And it looks like Johnson Street has been renamed:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?q=99+JOHNSON+STREET,+brooklyn,+ny&spn=0.003222,0.010274&t=h&iwloc=A&hl=en
That's a pretty built-up shopping area, so I imagine something is probably there, although it's hard to tell from the photo.

Have you considered contacting the Brooklyn Historical Society?

They might be able to help you with this much more than anyone around here would be able to.
  • Hey Gail dont travel by there that often but can tell you that the Gowanus Parkway runs along Hicks street there. If she lived in one of hte apartment buildings there most of them have been turned into condos/co-ops. You can check with information to see if there is a 522 Hicks Street Corp. or Assoc., etc. As far as Johnson Street is concerned it is still there but it is really a side street of NYC Technical College and there is no residential properties there.

May I ask how long ago your grandparents lived here. If they were married in a catholic church in this neighborhood about 90% of them are still standing and have copies of all their records. The only ones I can think of close by is St. Stephens Church, St. Peter St. Paul Church and St. Agnes. There could have been a church on the same street at 522 Hicks St.

    Good luck!
