Ditmas Park Needs a ....?
I love Ditmas Park. It has some great stores, restaurants, etc. But there seems to be a lot of empty storefronts on Cortelyou Rd and even Newkirk/Foster Aves.
Something is needed in the hood, but I just can't seem to put my finger on it. A Thai restaurant? A gourmet store? A hot dog and fries joint?
Anyone?

Personally, I would love to see a few affordable clothing & shoe stores open in the area -- maybe on Coney Island Ave, which is large enough to allow more shopping options? Clothing is the only item I buy frequently enough that I get annoyed about having to leave the neighborhood.
A few more restaurants would be nice. There are a lot of South Asian eateries on Coney Island Ave, which are good, but we could use more variety. I realize there have been a few new restaurants like Pomme de Terre, but would be nice to have some sit-down places with slightly lower priced entrees so we could visit more regularly. -
Ditmas Park doesn't "need" 'anything really. I mean, a lot of us moved here because it was affordable, safe, and beautiful. I don't want this to be another Park Slope. I left Park Slope because I realized that I was living around shops and restaurants that I couldn't afford anymore. The only thing that I could say would be nice to have is an actual bar, and I heard that one is opening on Cortelyou. But in the meantime, I can entertain people in my wonderful apartment, or meet people in other neighborhoods. I don't want to see this area turned into complete Yuppyville.

mixergirl - I agree with you 100%

a bar, yes please!!

I'd say a serviceable grocery store. I've only been in to my nearest store (on 18th ave near ocean pkwy) once, and I hope never to go there again. I have never been in a more disgusting, less well-organized grocery store in my life. And while I love Trader Joe's, I don't love having to lug my groceries home from Manhattan once a week.

.....to give me nice apartment
Sadly, my luck was on in the stars. -
Also: A bakery with good coffee. (If people know where these already exist, please let me know!) Dunkin' Donuts and McDonalds just don't hit the spot on Sunday mornings.
-
Try John's Bakery for coffee (get a red eye if you like a stronger coffee) and Vox Pop (but service is slow).
The baked stuff at John's is okay, but some are better than others. -
Vox Pop is near Cortelyou, right? Where's Johns?
Thanks Darla!!! -
Yes, Vox Pop is on Cortelyou and Stratford and John's is Cortelyou and Rugby.
There's a Connecticut Muffin nr Vox Pop, but they have weak coffee. -
bummer: that's all still a train stop away:( Seems my nabe is just too off the map. Then again, that's why I can afford it.

Subject: New Thing?
Ha, as far as what is "needed" in the hood, what is "needed" is more inclusive assimilation (as far as businesses) and attention to the actual "hood" not this Ditmas Park that is being created. There are alot of empty storfronts on Cortelyou Road and even Newkirk/ Foster avenue because before the gentrification that began to emerge up until maybe 4 or 5 years ago a young school boy like myself encountered problems such as trying to dodge one or more of the several neighborhood crack whores when crossing coney island avenue.
Although the neighborhood is missing many many things that people want, and by people I mean people with greater consumable income than the true "Hood" people have, what the neighborhood needs is more business that will cater to the families who just aren't able to enjoy "Ditmas Park" or what I used to call, the ghetto.
I'm not trying to call anyone out, just needed to express this atleast somewhere on this site, thank you for the opportunity. I'll probably do it again. Ha.
