A Good Plant Store?

Hey All,

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to go to buy good, inexpesive plants? I've seen a couple corner places walking around but pretty much all they had were flowers... i want GREEN in my apartment before it gets too cold to see it outside! Thanks.

  • Check out the Farmer's Market at GRP on Saturday. Also the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has a shop with a nice selection and reasonable prices (I've bought tons of plants there).
  • Zuzs (sp?) Petals on 5th around 5th street
  • I've been wondering the same thing. The Zuzu's Pettles people are so nasty that I would rather not give them business. I am going to try the GAP farmer's market.
  • The greenhouse store on the triangle across from the One Hanson Place building on Flatbush Avenue near Atlantic Avenue. They have an amazing array of items, very knowledgeable staff and know what they are doing.

Regarding Zuzu's Petals, my opinion of them is they are simply a neighborhood boutique who thinks they are the best thing on earth. I never thought too much about them until there was a fire on the 7th Avenue block they were on a year or so ago.

The fire took out Zuzu's, Olive Vine, and the Korean Grocer. I lived on that block 10 years ago and personally that Korean grocer was great. When the fire hit I appreciated that Zuzu's Petals had fans, but local media coverage focused on them--and them alone--as if the other stores were an after thought. Nowhere in any of the articles did anyone talk about any other stores on the block despite the fact they were all clearly active--and thriving--businesses in the community.

Perhaps it's me just reading too much into things, but in the great scheme of things the Korean grocer and Olive Vine were used and a bit more vital to the community than one little quaint flower shop.

Head over to the greenhouse on Flatbush near Atlantic before it becomes bulldozed to make way for an overdesigned BAM art library.
  • Funny - I always found the ladies at Zuzu's petals to be very helpful and nice. I also think the triangle place is very expensive, but it is very convenient to me. Another place you should try is on 3rd Street near 3rd Ave called Gowanus Flowers or something. They have a great selection, Good luck!

    good idea
and reminds me there's a florist/plant store on Fourth Ave (10/11th St) that has cool "burro's tail" succulents in the window. It's on the uphill side of Fourth Ave, across the street from the tamales and flowers stand.
  • Subject: olive vine was the cause and reason for fire

it was a dirty filthy place and the fire was a set up now u have a bank coming zuzu was there for over 30 yrs

Jack have you been there recently? I know it was once owned by the same owners as Midtown Florist but it has recently changed owners. Do you know if the same staff is there. If it is then I have to agree 100% that this is the most knowledgeable place re plants.
