Men's haircut — Brooklynian

Men's haircut

Subject: Men's haircut

Sorry if I am discussing an old subject, but the search function doesn't work that great.

Are there any recommendations for mens haircuts in the area? Tried searching on Citysearch and Yelp, but most of the reviews tend to be from women (not that it's bad, just different).

Actually, my hair is not typical male since I tend to have it (much) longer. Around 10 inches on top right now. I like the shaggy layered hair rocker look, so going to a barber is not for me. Got my last haircut at Mudhoney, and while it was good, it wasn't $80 good. Thinking of something a bit shorter than normal now, so I am looking for a place with a good stylist to help me pick out something since I don't know exactly how I want to cut my hair.

I live closer to Windsor Terrace, but would consider almost any area, including Manhattan. I work in Soho.

  • My longtime barber/stylist is terrific. He does men's and women's hair. He was trained old-school in Italy, and is a wizard with scissors. He used to be the personal barber to Steve Ross, the Chairman of Time Warner (until he died) and many other Time Warner execs.

He has a shop at the corner of 61st Street and Lexington in Manhattan. He works by appointment only ((212) 935-2442) and charges $55 (I add a $5 tip to make it $60).

  • Booklaw, you leave a $5 tip on a $55 haircut? I think I may be tipping too much...I leave $5 on a $12 haircut (and yes, it looks like a $12 haircut :) ) but I thought that was what everyone did. Is that too much? I've never had a haircut that cost more than $20 but I figured a $10 or $15 tip might be the standard for a $50+ haircut.

Now I'm curious, what should the tip be on a men's haircut? Also, are women expected to tip more? Can any hair professionals provide any general guidelines for saps like me who aren't sure? Thanks.
  • I have no idea what I ought to tip. I've been going to this barber for over 20 years, and his rates have risen considerably over that time. I've just paid the new rates and kept tipping the same. He owns the shop, so he doesn't have to split the $55 with anyone (except his landlord, ConEd, etc.) In effect, the entire cost is a tip.
  • If this is opened up to places outside Park Slope, I have to put a word in for my man Peter at Jerry's barbershop which is located in the concourse of Rockefeller Center (almost exactly under where the Christmas Tree is set up). Call him at 212-246-3151. He is an old Italian guy too and his haircuts cost just $25 (I tip $5).
  • If you are in the Windsor Terrace area try From Head to Toe on 7th ave, near 13th: 718-499-9609. Mary has been cutting my hair since I moved to the hood. She does great work and the salon is recently remodeled; a men's haircut is $22, I guess you are on your own tipwise...
  • Medusa on 7th Ave (and 1st?) does a great job and all of the stylists are cool. A haircut will run you about $60 (with tip)
  • I guess it has been a _long_ time since I paid for a haircut... I did notice a place in Manhattan on 3rd and somewhere like 12th-ish maybe that did $5 haircuts. That would be more my style. Or lack thereof. I guess.
  • i go to joseph's on 7th and union. nothing fancy, but cheap and servicable. good candidate for tabatha's salon makeover...
  • i've gotten some decent dos at Delilah's on 4th ave (and Union) and The Beehive in W'burg. Generally I think you're supposed to leave 15-20 percent tip.

Sixty Bucks for a man's haircut???? Are you nuts??? No man is supposed to have hair that pretty.

Hell, OP posted a $80 shaggy rocker cut. In his words. Hey, it takes big bucks to look _this_ disheveled.

No offense. Had I shaggy rocker hair, I would undoubtedly be _very_ particular about it.

  • I've been going to Thom at (i think) 148 Ainslie in Williamsburg. I'm not sure if thats even the name of the shop since there's no sign but that's also the address, its on Ainslie between Lorimer and Leonard. He does men's cuts for $50 and he's damn good. Takes direction well but also just knows how your hair should look on you and indeed real good with that "shaggy rocker" look.

I've gone the $20 Astor Place route for years but got tired of looking like one of those penguins with the hair coming out of the sides of their heads when it grew out in three weeks.
  • Thanks for all the comments.

Yes, I love my shaggy hair, but it's always cleaned and combed. Just can't stand short hair (then again, it's been longish for two decades now). While I still have it, I am going to wear it full and long!

Most barbers, or any cheap salon (Astor), just don't understand how to do a good layered cut. I need more than a straight bob. I only get 2-3 haircuts a year, so I don't mind paying more than Astor Place, as long as it's worth it. Mudhoney wasn't worth it for example.

Going to look into From Head to Toe and Thom. Been to Medusa before and I didn't care for their no credit cards policy. My flexible rule is if it's under $20, then I pay cash, anything over goes on a card. If someone is going to charge me $60, it will go on my card, period. Not going to help someone cheat on their taxes.
  • rtraindweller, is this the place?

Thom used to work there, forgot to mention that.

Are you saying "yes, that is the place, but he used to work there" or "no, the place I am talking about is different, Thom used to work at the other place"> :)

Not finding anything by searching for 148 Ainslie, but I did find this guy:

A $200 haricut could not help me and my do.
  • I think Zalon Plus on 3rd ave b/w 9th and 10th streets and would be perfect for you.

    (212) 228-9985

They charge $34 for a men's cut and wash.

It's owned by two male asian twentysomething hipsters who leave something to be desired when it comes to bedside manner but have the effin skillz to pay the bills.

I've gone everything from the $12 barbershop route to my firend Danillo who is a Loreal stylist that charges $120 and hour and they have the highest level of professional skill of anyone in the business. They do all scissors, any length, take their time and can do any style.

Check them, you will not be dissapointed.

And no, I have no affiliation and don't even go there anymore.

Since I've move to P Heights from Bushwick with the resultant rent/cost of ecerything increase I now try to conserve funds and go to that barbershop across from Key Foods on fifth ave, who are also very good, but in a barbershop, not a stlyist league.

Heh sorry for bein unclear. I meant yes that is the Thom I'm speaking of. He used to work at Hello Beautiful and now works at the place on Ainslie. I'm not sure if that's the exact number or even the name of the shop. There's no sign or anything and I've never even thought to ask (maybe I should?). I can give ya their number if ya'd like.
