10-14 points: You are a Hipster. You seek out the latest and greatest music, and you might have a blog. You go to shows at Mercury Lounge, Bowery Ballroom and Northsix several times a month, and most of your friends are hipsters, too. You have little in common with most co-workers or fellow students. You’ve gazed longingly at the Misshapes photo gallery and considered it — maybe you’ve even gone once or twice — but guest lists and Happy Ending after-parties are still a foreign concept, even though you’d love to be a part of it. You’ve stopped hanging out above 14th Street.

Can someone help me answer these questions? I wouldn't be opposed to knowing....!!!!
  • I have a feeling the only person who can explain is our own Candissima -Hipster Extraordinaire 8)
  • BrookFetish wrote: Can someone help me answer these questions? I wouldn't be opposed to knowing....!!!!
I can tell you the ones I got (including the no point ones):

    1) Brooklyn Vegan
    2) The Dark Room is on Ludlow between Stanton and Houston
    3) The party was called Fixed
    5) The Fader is a front magazine for a marketing company
    7) Gavin McInnes: Publisher or something of Vice; Michael T, DJ/party promoter; Todd P: rock show promoter
8.) The Cobrasnake or Last Night’s Party -- party picture sites
    9) Do you know the name of the doorman at Misshapes and Motherfucker? Thomas
    10) Do you know any of the details about why Death From Above had to change their name to Death From Above 1979? They had a conflict with DFA Records
    11) Do you know what Cornerstone is? A marketing company
    12) Have you ever received anything for free — anything at all — from Cornerstone? Oops...one extra point for me.
    14) Can you identify the fake UK buzz band in this group: Arctic Monkeys, Tiny Riot, Test-Icicles, Art Brut? Tiny Riot is fake
    15) Do you know the procedure for gaining entry into the Alife Rivington Club and Nom de Guerre? Hmmm...Alife you buzz, NDG you go down the stairs at the corner of Bleecker and Broadway. I might end up with another point and go into the self-loathing category.
    17) During the summer season that somewhat recently concluded, guys: did you wear a T-shirt with a blazer? Girls: did you wear a pair of
cowboy boots that you had bought before July? If you are not from/haven't lived in a place where cowboy boots aren't just dumb, you should be shot, so...no.
    19) While having a conversation with someone in a bar, has the topic ever turned to how much you both hate Ultragrrrl, even though you both agreed on “how nice she is in person?” Yes to the first part but I could really give a crap if she's nice or not. She's a blogger, DJ, ex-Spin writer.
    21) During CMJ three months ago, did you attend two separate parties DJ’d by Steve Aoki … in the same day? NO. He's a DJ/record label owner from LA, notable for being the son of the Benihana guy and Devon Aoki's brother.
    22) Do the following letters mean anything to you: LVHRD? Live hard. They put on parties and stupid events.

    I really am a self-loathing hipster!
  • :|
    You really ARE a hipster...
    I'm so sorry...
  • so what's the deal with Ultragrrrl - why is she known? why do people perpetuate her popularity? what's the fascination?

That is a question for the ages really.

Sarah did my show once (we're pretty small, though, so I don't know that we were really perpetuating anything!) and she is indeed a really nice girl. I don't read her blog a whole lot, but she used to work at Spin and is very well-connected in and knowledgeable about the music scene in general. Guess that might be at least part of it.

    And what is your "show"?

Oh, sorry -- I've posted about it in the Classifieds a couple of times (which reminds me that I should post there about our next one!). It's an all-blogger reading performance series called The WYSIWYG Talent Show:

I scored ZERO. the amusing part is that I have no knowledge of top-40 or pop culture, either. I have NO KNOWLEDGE AT ALL.:lol::lol::lol:

This sounds great. I actually think that Cupcake should try this out. Our blog is hysterical but its even better when she tells you the stories because she uses a great German accent.

Hey now! That's not a bad combo...just when it reaches the oversaturation point! *sigh* Am I just making this hipster denial thing worse?
  • The worst was when my husband and I left the house at different times and later met up with some friends at the Weezer show. We both showed up with our geek glasses wearing t-shirts with blazers. It wasn't hipsterish because we're too old...it was just kind of pathetic.
