Help a Doctoral Student, Help your Kids!
Hello,
I am a doctoral student working towards a degree in School Psychology. As such, I need to practice giving IQ tests to children. Because I am a student, I won't be able to give you the results of these tests, but there IS a practice effect, so if your kids take the test once, they will do better the next time!
This is great if you're planning on having your kids tested to get into private schools!
I'm looking for children between the ages of 6 and 18. The testing session lasts for about an hour and a half.
I'm a park slope resident, and would be willing to come to you at your convenience.
[email protected]
Thanks!
claire

What's the fun of an IQ test if you don't get bragging rights?
-
Chipster, you are absolutely right...
In the interest of keeping this post alive, of helping this grad student, of testing the fuck out of little kids, and finally, of public masturbation.... why don't we all list our IQ scores.
Mine is 128.
Note: Please don't list your score based on an internet, ad driven website. The actual IQ test takes between 90 and 120 minutes and MUST be administered by a trained professional (such as the one this person is attempting to become)
Personally, I don't put much credence on a test score... then again, my score is only 128. -
I have a pretty high IQ score, but I don't put much credence in them either. And I haven't been tested since I became an adult and burned out all my neural pathways with illicit substances. I'm sure I'm _way_ stupider than I was back then.
Of course, there is always the buffalo theory. -

Claire - good luck with this. My kids are too young, so sorry I can't help. Maybe try to post on the Park Slope Parent's mailing list. I do have a question though - I thought IQ tests measured innate intelligence. Shouldn't the testing effect be minimal to nonexistent?

You would think so, but repeated testing (like les the half a dozen, not getting crazy) has shown improvements up to 10-15 points. Which is pretty significant. And goes to show the usefulness of the test a bit IMO. Additionally, compare scores between different ethnic groups and socioeconomic backgrounds to shed more light on said usefulness...
But honestly. It takes a _special_ kind of parent to put their kid through an hour and a half test without even being able to get the results in the hope of increasing a meaningless score. Yay. Mensa membership (sucks.)
Just saying.

Are these things mutually exclusive?

One I failed involved putting pictures in order. In IQ test world, after getting ready for work, dad went off to the diner for breakfast on his way to work. In my world, dad saved all his money for beer and burgers at lunch, and had breakfast at home. Me = fail.
Pointless example, but it is representative of how the testing is skewed so that certain groups of people do better than others due to their experiences, as opposed to a true test of innate intelligence.
Whatever _that_ is. -
As the OP will certainly confirm, it is these biases that a skilled test giver is meant to correct... there are different versions of the IQ test given according to age, race, and status.
Furthermore, a test giver has some latitude as far as interpreting an answer... the world isn't black and white people - and neither is the IQ test.
The test is still a very useful tool to gauge an persons intelligence. A tool among many tools. Daver, do you feel like a tool among tools?
But what do I know, I only got a 128. -
Whadda I know, I put in screws with a hammer. And "meant to correct" is a far cry from reality, as a review of test scores across different groups will attest. Teaching our children to take tests isn't teaching our children anything. Well, I guess it is teaching them _something_. Just not something that _should_ be useful. Reality aside, of course.

So, you want people to let you give their kids IQ tests, but, the parents won't be told the results nor will the parents or the child be compensated in any form for doing this, just the joy of helping an unknown doctoral student?
Yeah, good luck with that. -
"Meant to correct" is not the same as "corrects in all circumstances". Of course their are biases... and, again, test givers are MEANT to correct them.
The fact is we are all uniquely gifted... even you (that is the collective "you".. yes, daver, you to.) -
I agree with LongTimeSlopper... I mean, you really think people are going allow their kids to do something that might help them? You really think people in this world would ever do something nice for someone who wants to make a living helping school children? Are you on crack?
Boy, you must think you live in a nice neighborhood with intelligent parents...you must think this community message board is, in some way, meant to help the people of the community. You must think it takes a village..
Wow, what brand of steamy fresh horse shit do you think you are peddling around here? -

Yes, we are all a unique little snowflake - just like everybody else.

Yah, set them down for ninety minutes of that steamy fresh horseshit and teach them young to work that system! Because _that_ is what it is all about.

Ya know.
Think for yourself.
Shun the handshake. -
Daver, imitation is the best finest flavour of flattery, however, you persistent tailgating of my posts is beginning to startle me.
I do own a taser, it is charged, and I know where your nuts are... sorta -

NCLB has made this generation's school experience ALL about testing. Recess, art, 2nd language, and music have been denied, while their fleeting childhood is crushed under the barrage of tests. It sucks. I am opposed to adding any more testing criteria to these kids. BOCES was a good program, and giving kids skills that they can graduate high school with would be invaluable.
Aren't we supposed to be graduating individuals who can contribute to society?
We test from Pre K to High School--for what?! College Debt and the promise of a better career.
142- before all the drugs.
