Neighborhood Questions

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
hi! my friend and i are interested in finding a 1 br to share in brooklyn. i've been looking around and a lot of the listings mention prospect heights. The prices are pretty reasonable. I do plan to go around the neighborhood in a couple of weeks but I would also like to get your feedback.

the streets i'm interested in are:

st. john's place
bergen street
classon avenue

anything you can tell me about these places will be greatly appreciated. my friend gets off work late and wants a fairly safe neighborhood to go home to.

thank you so much!

  • St Johns place runs from Park slope deep into crown heights, as does Bergen, so you need the cross streets before anyone can tell you much about the neighborhood.

Classon is not prospect heights, its either Crown Heights or the nomansland between Prospect Heights and Crown Heights, depending who you ask. That said, good apartments can certainly be found, but again, it depends on what block.

Do you have cross streets? That would make it easier for us to help you. You will find that often there will be a beautiful, safe block and then the next block may be run down and somewhat shady.
  • Most people agree that Prospect Heights ends at Washington Ave.

Classon Ave is the western boundary of Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy (and the divide between those two somewhere between Park Pl and Atlantic), and the eastern boundary of a triangle unclaimed by any neighborhood (Washington, Atlantic, and Classon).
  • You should have no problem finding an apartment in that area of Prospect Heights. Prospect Place, between Grand and Classon is nice, and the old hospital is home to some posters on this web site. While some areas are a bit rough around the edges, it's considerably safer than in the past.
  • oops! sorry for the lack of the cross streets. shows you how much i know.

bergen street - classon ave and franklin ave
st. john's place - classon ave and washington ave
another st. john's place - classon ave and franklin ave
classon ave - Prospect Pl. and St. Marks Ave.

what streets should i be looking out for?

St. Johns between Classon and Washington is where the firehouse is right? So, keep mind you might sound asleep and jolted awake by some loud sirens sometimes. The block also seems a little desolate to me.

so anything to the right of washington ave is not considered prospect heights by most people? thanks!

all your answers are greatly appreciated

  • thanks all!

hopefully it doesn't snow so bad tomorrow so i can go around the area.

i wanted to know your thoughts about the 5th ave area bet Warren St. and Baltic St.

is it a better area than the ones i mentioned before? can you recommend some streets that i should look out for when looking at listings?

I think that's either park slope or bocaca (bococa?) - not p. heights in the least.

and. yeah. no clue where that is.

try one of the other boards in this group.
  • weird! it said in the listing that it was in the prospect heights area. how confusing.

    thanks tho!

Most of 5th Ave is shopping and/or restaurants so there is heavy pedestrian traffic. The block that you mention has a large Key Food grocery store there. You're about 5 blocks from a large subway station (including the LIRR). I happen to think it is a nice area.
  • A good resource for getting some sense of what's on a particular block is the Small Town Brooklyn site. They don't have listings for Prospect Heights, unfortunately, but they do cover several other nearby parts of Brooklyn, including Park Slope and Boerum Hill.

Real estate brokers and others listing properties will lie (LIE, I TELL YOU!) about what the neighborhood is called, because prices vary by neighborhood. If they tell you that Classon is in Prospect Heights, and you don't know any better, they can charge more than saying it's in Crown Heights. Same with Park Slope over Prospect Heights.

Perhaps we should make one of these for Prospect Heights. How hard can it be?

This is definately park slope... its a cool area with many restaurants and bars nearby, plus South Paw, a music venue. That would be great for you to catch a show on a weeknight!
