Hey Yarn People,

Apologies for the false start, I gotta watch that itchy posting finger.

Ahemmm! I'm told by a lot of people that they keep missing the Knit In and Freddy's since it's only once a month. Sorry folks, knitting can't compete with live music, opera and go-go dancers.

So in addition, I'm starting a regular knitting circle at Maha's Cafe, just around the corner from Freddy's. It wil be held every Thursday night from 7:00 until 9:30. I'm also trying to encourage more guys to knit, it can't be just me and Doug. (Can it? Hello? This thing working?). This is a knitting circle and not a class. It's FREE, and you might glom onto an avid knitter.

Knit In at Maha's Cafe
Starting Thursday December 8, 2005 and then every Thursday night
7:00 until 9:30.
69 sixth Avenue, (bet. Flatbush and Bergen, near Freddy's)
(718) 789-0510
Pattern Books + Swift + Wool Winder
Corcheters are welcomed and men are encouraged

BTW, Maha is a real sweetheart and she makes incredible Middle Eastern food, vegiterian and meat dishes. She is in fact a vegeterian herself. I'm a huge fan of her Artichoke Heart Quiche and the Shawerma. The Baba is really good too. If the knitting's going rough you can always nosh. I know I do.

Join us. Sit. Knit. Stich. Bitch... Nosh.

Cheers,
That Yarn Guy

  • Subject: Coming out

Geez, this is like "coming out".
I'm a guy, and I taught myself to knit cause it's fun and interesting.
But doing it in public is, like, so queer.
If you can forgive the stereotyping, surely you can reasonably address the topic. Can't you?
  • Sorry Botanic, I disagree with you, actually, I think KIP is a powerful chick magnet.

I think lots of women find guys who knit quite intriguing. Remarks like that, not so much.

(Edited to be a bit less harsh, but really -- we live in New York and this IS 2005. Geez.)
  • Men knitting, and knitting in general {grandma, etc.} has had a terrible reputation for decades, and I feel Botanic is just reflecting the sticky residue of that. Attitudes have drastically changed, and he's perhaps just cottoning on to it. Come on out, Mr. Male Knitter, and be proud of your {hetero} skills! Back in the day, sailors and european men knitted extensively. You can carry on that tradition.
  • Think of it as a more productive and useful form of the knot-tying you learned in Boy Scouts.

I find it interesting that knitting got trendy (as a person who sews and embroiders). I've now met two people my age who know how to knit and want to learn to embroider. Will that be the next big thing? They were both doing screen-printed patterns though and didn't seem too keen on the kind of counted/charted patterns that I usually do.
  • Oh come now gentlemen. We live in modern times. Knitting doesn't make you gay, "macare" does. You guys have to show up, it just can't be me and Doug all the time.

I don't know if knitting makes you a chick magent though. They do find it interesting though. BTW "sane" women find men who knit interesting. crazy chicks liek rock stars. I know this, I play an accordion.
  • You mean macrame'?
  • Subject: Correction to errata

Whoops, again with the itchy posting finger. Correction to errata: I meant to type in "Macrame" (joke). You have to admit it's kidna freaky as a yarn craft. Does anyone really want a wall hanging shaped like an owl? Or a plant hanger for a dead fern?

I'd like to start a yarn exchange, I have a lot of balls (of yarn) that don't insprire me. Idon't recall what I was thinking at the time of purchase.

We've done a couple of yarn swaps at my office -- it's a great way to get rid of stuff you aren't going to use, and I've scored some nifty yarn myself that way! I can't come to Maha's this week but maybe next week I'll stop by; I have a cone of this grey ribbon yarn -- enough to make a sweater -- that's been collecting dust and cat hair for a year now.
  • Well, guess what, I am "gay" or thats what I've been told all my life.
(OH that's a whole other topic, that i'M not sure this site is the forum for, you know: sexual orientation is a figment of the 19th C imagination)
For me it's like, how could I escape the stereotype? - I'd be PROOF of it.
Hey, it IS about sailor's knots and primitive handiwork for me.
And yeah, I know every snowboarder's got a crochet needle in his pack.
Maybe I just wanna know I'm not gonna be thought of as the (unwelcome?) "gay guy".

    Rum, sodomy, and the lash!
    I mean, knitting.
botanic wrote: And yeah, I know every snowboarder's got a crochet needle in his pack
    .

I didn't know that. And I want to know what you're talking about.

I have a huge gay crush on your cool site name, Botanic. And I think this site has more than a few "19th century notioned" queers. At least I hope so.
  • that Pogues-loving guest above was me
  • If I were in public, say a coffee bar, and I went to reach into my bag and pull out my latest knitting project and I just happened to look up and lock eyes with a guy who was also sitting there knitting, I would want to JUMP HIS BONES regardless of whether he were gay, straight or vegetarian.

I also think baseball catchers and trumpet players are sexy, so it's not like I'm into femme-y dudes. And of course, the more advanced his skill level, the more attractive he is to me. Skill is hot. Creativity is hot. Knitting is hot. Do it in public. But be forewarned that you may look up to find a short girl with several balls of varigated sock yarn flying through the air about to land in your lap.

Sorry i can't make it to Maha's, I babysit Medusa's gorgeous babe on Thursdays...
  • Subject: Change the topic

Whoa! Holds back teh reigns! Let's keep it about the yarn. Let me throw out some new topic.

    1) Llama or merino: What's the black?

    2) I didn't know skaters carry chrochet hooks. That's kinda cool. Do they just make hats or board cozies?

    3) Alpaca: The new llama or just another spitting camelis
  • Botanic wrote: Well, guess what, I am "gay" or thats what I've been told all my life.
Well, good Maude, why are you worried about people think, then? Hell, I was taught how to knit by a gay man.

Sorry I was so harsh. I'm bisexual myself and do LGBT civil rights work as a career, so I guess I have rather sensitive antenna. One of the things I love about Daily Heights is that there's been very little homophobia on the message boards here.

    Anyway, back to yarn...
  • No harm done apollonia666. I saw your hat Noro hat online, very niiiiice.

I am interested in your grey cat-hair ribbon. Is it 50 rayon / 50 cat? I have six balls of Rowan Biggy Print (SH 234/Lot 6E4/merino/33yrds) to trade with you. I'll hang on to it for you for next time. It's has varigated earth tones with thick and thin twists.

I'm going through my "what was I thiniking" box for tomorrow. I have to quit saying I have loose balls, the message might be misconstrude.

You still planning on going to Maha's Botanic?

    Funny KIP story:
I was on the Q train heading to Union Square knitting. I dropped a ball of yarn and then bent to pick it up. Then I dropped my knit work and broke a needle by stepping on it. It get's worse. The ball rolled across the asile from me and I chased it down.

I was trying to look cool so I picked up the ball of yarn and went to sit back down, meanwhile ripping the knitting out of the hat that I was working on as it got tangled on my leg.

I jumped out on the Canal street stop.

Oooh, that sounds lovely! I don't know for sure about the coned yarn I have, but the pattern called for Knit One Crochet Two Meringue, which is 60% merino, 25% viscose, and 15% polyamide. The lady at Seaport Yarn said this was pretty much the same stuff. There are pics here:

    http://jnjknitwits.com/KnitOne/Meringue.htm

If that sounds like something you want, I'd be happy to swap with you.

I haven't had a subway knitting disaster of quite the proportions you described, but I did once have a ball of hand-dyed peach and pink boucle cotton bounce out of my bag. It rolled all the way to the other end of the car before I could get to it. To top things off, it was raining like crazy that day, so it got totally muddy. Disgusting. I had to peel off all the yarn from the outer layer of the ball and just toss it when I got home.

Saw the link, Yarn Guy like. How does it feel? Strechy? Silky? I never have an immediate purpose for yarn, I just buy what I like. That probably explains my odd yarn collection.

You should register so I can private message you!

It's sort of stretchy, and rather soft.
  • Subject: I hate IM

Hey apollonia666. I finally registerred on Daily Heights. Wooo Hooo! So how does the PM work?
  • That was pretty cool last night at Maha's. We had a small starter group: Doug, me and Botanic. One guy wanderred in and dragged his wife down stairs to prove that men knit. He's joining us next week. We had a bunch of walk-ins that wanna knit with us next Thursday as well.

Doug and I wanderred over the Opera on Tap at Freddy's after that. Cool stuff. Anne and her friendly troup of Divas are going to join us on low-tech karaoke night at Freddy's. I bribed her with a scarf (a good use for extra yarn).
