Matzoh Ball soup on 7th Ave?
Where on earth can I get some matzoh ball soup around here? (near the F train 7th AVe stop). Not one of these diners or bagel shops carries it. You call this Brooklyn?

If you want to pay the price Blue Ribbon (5th Ave) has a great Matzoh Ball soup. Of course the cost of one bowl would be the same as me making it at home for 15 people.

I've always felt our 'hood could use a good Jewish deli a la Barney Greengrass where we could get some good schmaltz, appetizing, and Matzoh Ball soup, etc...and I'm a goyim from Wisconsin.
Barring that...Fairway has a good Matzoh Ball soup but that's nowhere near 7th Ave. -
We had a Jewish deli many many years ago and it didn't do enough business in this health obsessed community. It was good too!

The Park Cafe on 7th Ave between Union and Berkeley makes good matzoh ball soup. However, for what ever reason they refuse to put fresh dill in the stock. Barring that they make it with a homemade stock and matzoh ball.

We had two actually. Bellamellio on 1st Street and 7th Ave, and the one on Union and 7th Ave. Bellamellio's closed because of a divorce, the other closed because they sucked. Other than those two there was Herzog's, Durell's and the German guy on who was on 7th Ave and Union. -
Idlewild, perhaps you can answer a question that's been annoying me because it's just out of the reach of my memory...
For a couple years after I moved to the Slope, I used to go to a Jewish deli (the one on Union??) that had really good fried chicken and kasha varnishkas. I can't really vouch for any of their other food, because I always had one of those two dishes, accompanied with a Cel-Ray. Anyway, this place had weird, highly detailed 18" or so figurines of TV and movie celebrities -- the Marx Brothers, Charlie Chaplin, Ralph and Norton from the Honeymooners, etc.
What was the name of that place? -

The ethnicity of who makes my pastrami sandwich concerns me not at all.
Anyone been to Katz's lately? (like the last decade) there is no test at all for the staff there to see if they are jewish but the sandwiches are great.. and the matzoh ball soup, too. -
The gentleman I'm talking about was the most professional person in that place. Since I don't remember his name but I do remember he was from China...

Herzog's was not a Jewish deli, it was just a deli. I don't remember Bellamellio's, but how could a place with a name like that be a Jewish deli? -

No they weren't but they did have a few Jewish style sandwiches even if they did make them with Irish corned beef. Although I beg to differ with you on Herzog's. It wasn;t just a deli it was a institution. No one made knishwiches and fried chicken in the Slope like they did. Certainly they weren't kosher but I do remember a few "Jewish" style foods. Quite good too. Bellamellio's had two stores at one time side by side. Where the antiques store and newsstand sit now on the corner of 1st Street and 7th. Their corner store was strictly gourmet. Much like Dean and Delluca. Their kosher deli only lasted a year or two. '79 to '80 something. They were strictly kosher style. Tongue, corned beef, pastrami, kishka (sp?) , knocks and hot dogs and matzoh ball soup. All homemade except for the sausages and all really delicious. It was run by Jack and Rita Pasalaqua. A few other old timers may remember it.

Ok, I moved here in '86, that is why I don't remember Bellamellio's.
And, yeah the jewish deli on Union and 7th was the one with the celebrity statues.
Oh, and I still miss Herzog's, they were the BEST -
Bellamellio's "appetizing" store was fantastic. Gourmet cream cheeses from Amish farmers, lox and sable and whitefish and other smoked fishes, sliced thin as they should be... bialys and all other good things. And Rita was a delight!

Try Second Helpings on 9th Street off 7th Av. They usually have a holiday
menu, 'tis the season for matzoh ball soup. -
Outside of the prestigious Heights/Slope area does anyone know of any specific place/s in Crown Heights, Midwood, Williamsburg, etc.,?
