I'm Reading at Bristen's, Friday 9/19

Subject: I'm Reading at Bristen's, Friday 9/19

Hey folks.

Whether you've been meaning to check out Bristen's or just want to see if i'm as beautiful in life as in my avatar (a: almost), you should come out to Bristen's this Friday, 9/19, at 7.

I and a group of other fabulous young lady writers will be reading selections from a new anthology: Submerged: Tales from the Basin. Much more here, but in short, Submerged is an anthology of writing and art by women about hair and New Orleans. It's a project several years in the making, and we're thrilled to have at last found a publisher who will give part of the proceeds to charities working in New Orleans on the aftermath of Katrina.

Reading on Friday:

Stella Fiore
Kelly Gola
Ellen Hagan
Anne Hays
Jean Kahler
Emily Macel
Anne Wenzel
Kara Westerman

With a musical interlude by Alyssa Robbins

The order's not set in stone yet, but I'm hosting and will be reading last.

I'd be pleased as punch if you came. Bristen's is a cool little joint. It's BYOB, so it has all the makings of a cheap night out. Plus we can hit Franklin Park afterwards if there's sufficient interest....

  • [shameless bump]

we had a reading in the city last night, with some of these same folks. man, ellen hagan is a whale of a performer. not in the smacking her belly into the water, decimating local krill populations way, but in the "holy wow, i wish i didn't have to go right after her" kind of way.

    really, you should come.

Bristen's is a restaurant , so no prob there.
But 7pm is no good for me right now.
Anytime between 10am-3pm is my "outside play time"schedule these days.

  • AARGH, Sweet Tea!
I would so love to attend the reading! I have a copy of Submerged right here on my desk. A friend of mine from high school-- Bonnie Richardson-- has a piece in this fabulous collection. Ironically, I have a once in a few years or so chance to meet up with other midwestern high school friends at a bar owned by one of them in Williamsburg. Wishing you the best of luck.
I keep meaning to write a piece that I've had in mind for some time to send to the Stepsister ladies regarding chosen/alternative families. Congrats on your reading. Let us all know how it goes.
Which one is yours? I'd love to read your piece with your avatar in mind!
  • oh, wow! i haven't met bonnie, but i hope sometime we overlap at a reading or something someday.

i have 2 essays in the book (which should already give away my secret identity, already). one is called "learning to speak new orleans" and one is called "one braid".

    hope to meet you someday!
  • one more shameless bump....
  • When I arrived to the reading there were a few women sitting and drinking wine at the table, I assumed it was over. I sent my female friend in, she was the brownskin woman with dreds, you gave her a flier. I was sitting out front in a silver truck. Were you wearing a red necklace?
  • oh, yes that was me -- your friend was so sweet. i felt bad that she missed it. and you, too!

i'm not sure whether i'll be reading at any of the later readings, but there will be more events for the book. i'll post them here.
