The New Cake Shop naming brainstorm
Hi,
First, this is entirely unofficial. Curlygreg has yet to find the proper name for the new cafe/bar/restaurant thing that's going in the Universal Video space.
So, I trust that we all here at Brooklynian would most definitely have a few choice options we'd like to share.
So share away!
Curlygreg - of course, you are most entitled to what you like. But maybe this brainstorm will help you come up with something great!

Are you talking about the video place that is now vacent on 5th avenue around 8st?
-
no, prospect park west at 16th st.
how about - "not farrell's"?
or, The Park Slope Cake Shop?
just kidding, I can't help myself. -
How bout keeping the Universal sign and leaving it at that?
-
Ye Olde Gentriconfrontation Inn
-
-
I like simple names, so I’d just suggest “Greg’s Pub of Windsor.” But some of the artsy type people who’d go there might prefer something more creative.

i had to read it a few times to realize the combination of gentrification and confrontation.
in other news, the Mets are terrible. -

I love that word, but I can't take credit for it. I saw it here first (not sure who coined it, though) -
Wait so it's a cafe, bar or restaurant? Semantics people!!

How's Drunken Donuts
-
How about "Nightfall" or "Nightfall Pub"
A homage to Isaac Asimov's short story of the same name, reportedly written in his bedroom in the family home on Windsor Place.
Not a bad name for a pub notwithstanding... -

I like the idea of keeping the Universal video sign. just call it the universal pub. -

I like the Universal Pub as well -
Although Universal Video was there 20 years, that sign you see now has only been there since I think around 2000. They use to have a very different looking blue sign…. So I’m just saying if you’re suggesting keeping the name Universal only as an excuse to keep the sign for nostalgia, that sign that’s there now was not there for all that long.

You've got to start your nostalgia later these days to keep from running out of it.

First of all, you guys are all hilarious. Ye Olde Gentriconfrontation Inn is sooo perfect. Especially since I've just finished reading some local blogs where people are sounding off on that stupid Daily News article. I'm not generally a fan of being interviewed, but that journalist totally omitted anything I had to say that didn't fit in with what she wanted to say... so, right about now I'm feeling a name like "Bar Yuppy Scum" would be perfect. Anyways...
Nightfall does sounds nice... has a ring to it. "Bar Nightfall", I like the reference too. Or how about just Asimov's Pub? Or "I, Asimov's" (reminds me of I, Robot).
Keeping it simple is my line of thinking too (in reply to the person who suggested "Gregs Pub of Windsor"). Except my business partner would get really bent outta shape over calling that. I've been pushing for Curley's Pub (or Bar) to no avail too. Something wrong with my last name?! Huh?
We've considered the Universal Pub too... but, it's sort of bleh, right? And as a resident of the hood, I'm not so sure how much nostalgia there actually is for the ol' place.
Drunken Donuts made me laugh really loudly and startle my wife who had dozed off on the couch, a few feet behind me (sorry babe). But you all realize Dunkin Donuts came really really really close to getting this property right? As in, if I didn't, they would've the next day (for the record, I would've started getting my coffee there every morning if they had but I'm still glad to be the one on the lease!).
We have a few names kicking around we like but I want to get more work done on the space to figure out what name "matches the space".
Woah I'm tired... maybe I'll see some of you around 210 PPW? I'm usually there or around the corner on the stoop, which I like to refer to as "my office". -
How about "The Bar on the Corner of PPW and 16th that Doesn't Serve Beer to Go to Men in Double-Parked Cars"?
Too long?
Drunken Donuts it is... -

Done. -
Im clearly confused on whats going to be there. Will Donuts be served? Because if thats the case, I think Drunken Donuts is pretty hilarious. But if not, you are going to spend a hell of a lot of time explaining there are no donuts!
I can't speak for anyone else but the old Universal certainly doesn't hold much significance for me so I wouldn't go out of you way to keep that ugly sign. -
The Corner Bar.
Book it.
Choose a classic font painted on stripped out brick, "T H E C O R" can be on one side (16th street) and "N O R B A R" on PPW so the name literally wraps around the corner.
Done.
Now let's get working on an art gallery on PPW and I'll die peacefully. -
How about Greg, Moe and Curley's
-
Ooo art gallery - I am in. Let's organize it.

Well I completely disagree about that. Although the store was always empty in recent years when video stores in general were becoming extinct, it was always super packed through the 90‘s. I’ve lived around here all my life and although Universal was just one of several places I went to rent movies, it was always the place I went for getting pictures developed and making photo copies. The owner knew me by name and knew a lot of customers by name (although he was never around in the store‘s later years)…. I was 9 years old when it first opened and 29 when it closed.… I realize it couldn’t stay around forever and I wish you good luck with your bar, but I’ll always associate that space with Universal.
Nevertheless, I don’t see that as a reason for you to keep the old name….. I mean, when I’m at the corner of 7th ave & 9th street I still remember it as the corner of Soundtrack Video, Smiling Pizza, Holy Cow Record Store and Comics Plus, even though only one of those is still around….. But that doesn’t mean the Yoga space that’s there now should have kept the name Holy Cow, or the Brooklyn Industries store that’s there now should have kept the name Comics Plus. Things move on. -

To who?, Drunks (':D') -
Andy and I bought 80% of the old stock off Holy Cow when they closed... I miss that place. Actually, their prices were sometimes a little hard to figure out, so I didn't buy too much there... but good people nonetheless.
I moved to WT at the end of 2002 so maybe I missed Universal's heyday. But anyways, I've been researching the history of Windsor Terrace a lot lately, trying to see if we can have a name that references the neighborhood that way. Like, the brewery that used to be here called Howard & Fuller (hence the streets). Or Pilgram Laundry which was a sort of socialist-based company (100% employee owned!). -

Cool... -

I had no idea about the brewery...or the laundry. Where are you finding this info? I've lived here since 1997, and would love to learn more.
p.s. I noticed that somebody was working at Ye Olde Gentriconfrontation Inn (that's what *I* am calling it until it has a proper name...) yesterday, but didn't see you on the stoop -
huh, really? i think i was there all day yesterday too. maybe i was on my lunch break with my wife and mother-in-law in the park?

as for the historical tidbits, some good stuff here that i used to start tracking down more specific things (like the brewery and the laundry): http://windsorterracebrooklyn.com/WThistory_2.html -

Really?…
Well, there's a space I'd love to open up between Prospect Ave and 18th st. It's that closed up place with an all white door and door frame and side windows. With a a little reno, that place would be simply gorgeous.
If you (and everyone reading this) thinks an art gallery would survive on PPW—if there's enough interest—my wife and I will start our engines. We've been slowly accumulating the balls to make the plunge.
To help augment the monthly rent, I would teach classical drawing and painting to anyone ages 2 and up.
I'm also a book designer, so possibly seminars on book building and design could be offered. There are a lot of artists in the area, so guest seminars would be welcome.
