Let the construction begin?
When I was walking to the GAP subway this morning (I walk down Eastern Parkway and turn right onto Plaza St) I discovered poles that had been cemented into the middle of the sidewalk, by the union temple parking lot (I'm guessing that's the beginning of scaffolding?). Are they already starting the construction for the luxury highrise? If so, does anyone know the timeline?

Bt any chance, do you have a picture of it?

Unfortunately I don't, since it was a surprise on my way to work. It really was an odd sight. Basically all around the perimeter of the parking lot area (on eastern and plaza st), they had drilled a hole in each segment of sidewalk (generally in the middle), and cemented in a metal pole in each one. Each pole was about waist length.

From what I heard, Richard Meier is planning on building 16-18 story condo building at 1 Prospect Park. Completion is set for 2006. Don't know if that's exactly the location you were referring to...

maybe they are putting in bollards! :-)
no word from this corner of the world on a timeline, but we'll see what we can find out! -
Unfortunately by the time I got there the scafolding was up so you could not see anything. Looks like Richard Meier will make it to Brooklyn before the end of 2006 afterall.

Subject: the scaffolding around the Eastern Temple parking lot
If you read the fine print on the documents pasted to the blue scaffolding fence around the Eastern Parkway Temple parking lot, you'll note that the sidewalk MUST be left at least 5 foot wide.
The scaffolding clearly violates the permit, with as little as 3.5 to 4 foot of sidewalk left in some places.
It's a tough (narrow) walk to navigate, especially with all the foot traffic from the BPL and the Health Club.
I called 311 to complain and so should you (the terminology to use is "blocked sidewalk"). If enough folk call, maybe we can get them to reset the scaffolding and widen the sidewalk, as they had to do to the construction fence around the BPL where you can still see the cemented over holes from the prior (misplaced) scaffolding fence. -
I'm going to call. thanks for the tip, deianira123.
