Dog run reviews
I just adopted a dog and would like to give her some good playtime in a dog run. From visiting two dog runs, I'm noticing the conditions vary wildly. I'd like to take my dog elsewhere for a romp, but not sure what I'll encounter at other dog runs.
I'd love it if you could share with me some details about your neighborhood dog runs so I can plan my next outing!
I'll start... I've visited the J.J. Byrne Park run (Park Slope) - seems to be a smallish area with wood chip surface. Not terribly clean but passable (definite urine smell, some mysterious black stuff that got on my dog and needed two baths to come off...). Adequate lighting for a night visit. Fence didn't fully close.
And, although it isn't in Brooklyn, I went to the dog run near Battery Park. Sizeable space, concrete flooring, running water from a hose and plastic kiddie pool for wading. Seems very clean. Benches inside the area if you need a rest. Double gated fence to keep in your little escape artists. Everyone was very friendly.

The BH dog run is huge and is pretty busy especially on weekends. Actually seems to be a destination for some dogs who arrive in their "Rover". It's next to the Jehovah's Witnesses building. Be careful they may try to convert your dog!
Union Square in the city is interesting for celebrity dogs but it is completly soaked in urine. -

Oh please tell me you don't mean those doggie strollers... I've always thought anyone who owned one of those needed psychiatric evaluation.
Are any of the Brooklyn dog runs of the cement flooring type instead of the dirt/wood chips kind? Would be nice to know of a place to take the furry one without a bath afterwards being mandatory. -
Prospect Park off-leash is the best dog run if you can do the off leash, or at least long training leash thing.
Other than that, I've only seen the JJB one and it was filthyand didn't look very conducive to dog enjoyment--tight dirty space. -
Here's a list by borough of all the dog runs in the city, along with parks that have off-leash hours:

Yes, that is a handy list, I've checked it out before. With this thread I was more trying to get an idea of what the conditions were like at the different dog runs - like size, surfaces, cleanliness, etc. - to avoid dragging my dog on the subway to some far away run only to discover it is just as icky as JJB.
Thankfully I learned that my furry one does well off leash so we can just hit up Prospect Park off leash hours until I find a better run than the JJB one to take her to during daylight hours.
Howdy, Stranger!
