I think that there is a LOT of difference between forcing medication onto someone in order to get them into court, and allowing someone who is unstable and dangerous without medication to wander the streets.
who draws these lines, deciding when people are so bad they should be forced to have meds?
i'm not saying tarloff isn't crazy, he clearly is. but i don't, and wouldn't, trust the government with my healthcare decisions and i don't believe we have the right to push them on others -

The police finally arrested the woman who was terrorizing the avenue and things are back to normal.
-
why do i have a feeling you live on my block and i see you every day, nod to say hello, and have no idea who it is?
-
I just wanted to tell everyone about an interesting book on the topic covered in this thread. It's entitled "Crazy" by journalist Pete Earley and covers the problems of American's mental health system, commitment laws, and his personal experiences trying to get his son, who suffers from bipolar disorder, treatment.

Hey Hamilton, I think I saw you on the corner of 9th Ave and 16th St the other day preaching to a bunch of concerned residents about "insane homeless criminals" terrorizing the neighborhood. Was that you?

Naw, you were stalking the wrong guy. -
"Naw, you were stalking the wrong guy."

I spotted her this weekend walking South on 8th Ave & yelling profanities at anyone who got within 20 feet of her.

Maybe we could get a combo deal. -

Yes and fuck golf courses as long as you are at all. Hideous waste of resources, especially in places such as the American Southwest. George Carlin had it right, open them up as homeless shelters instead.

Much as I respect George Carlin (may he rest in peace!), I think the homeless have enough problems without being shipped off to the Arizona desert.
Once you stop diverting river resources to those golf courses (which of course would happen instantly after they became unprofitable homeless shelters), those verdant spaces become suitable only for rattlesnakes. -

Not true. There is incredible diversity in the desert. It isn't at all like the wild open Sahara. Water is really valuable for things like... oh... drinking! Once upon a time that water fed Native American farming (they are the ones that dug all the canals hundreds of years ago, our engineers could barely improve inches upon miles) and eventually ended up in what is now Mexico for their farming as well. Now, Mexico get a dry riverbed.

And we get a plethora of bright green golf courses. In the desert. Obscene. -
Agreed.

I don't think Arizona would be happy with homeless golfers. -
I just feel terrible for the local storeowners around there. Many of those women are TOTALLY unhinged and VIOLENT. How do they deal with that on a daily basis is beyond me.
I saw one of the "residents" (black) hit a white woman in the back of the head and call here a "m-fk-white bitch outta my way" a few years ago, and the woman was so shocked she just fled into the subway.
The system is broken, in many ways, but having violent people roaming the streets aint' good for them or us. -
i agree, yet there doesn't seem to be anyone in the community willing to step on and deal with this.
i'm an activist sort. when i moved here the armory was still covered in outdated scaffolding and i was able to get it removed and a bit cleaned up with a few emails to our local representatives and channel 2 news.
i've emailed the CAMBA people at the armory and, granted, it took six months for them to respond, but when they did they wanted to have a sit down to talk about the community. i came to this board twice to ask people to join in with me, but nobody wanted to. i spoke with the people at royal and others who live in 15th street, and nobody wanted to get involved. nobody. i chose not to go over there alone to meet with them because, frankly, as a woman living over here i don't much feel like having the crap beaten out of me by some armory lady who knows i've gone in there to complain. if nobody else in the community gives a damn, why should i put myself in that position? it's not like i'm talking about people littering here. -
There must have been a full moon last night or the ladies of the Armory received their checks, two of them came down 16th st and turned onto PPW with their evening refreshments pressed against their bosoms like new born babies.
They went into the circle and joined the regulars who were there eagerly awaiting them , after a few swigs each one of the ladies became loud and belligerent , one of the guys asked her to quite down as he and some others had received summons from the 78th Pct on Tuesday for public drinking.
This sent her into a rage and she threatened to beat the crap out of him if he didn't shut up, he again told her to quiet down and she went ballistic and started screaming repeatedly at the top of her lungs ,NOBODY TELLS ME TO SHUT THE F---K UP, NOBODY, after a few minutes of her rant one of the other gentleman interceded and told him to shut the F---k up and leave her alone ,which he did and they then all sat down and had another swig of her bottle and became friends again.
It's heart warming to see people make up.
This could be minor compared to next year when the Mayor closes a Central Intake Service in Manhattan and transfers it to the Bedford Atlantic Armory creating an overflow, which I'm sure will be diverted to the 8th ave. Armory -
i thought the bedford armory was supposed to be for men.
-
It is, but at a recent meeting George Nashak Deputy Commissioner For The Homeless stated Crown Heights will not be the only Intake Center for men in the city and did not specify where the rest will be placed..
By their moving it from Manhattan to Brooklyn I feel that leaves open the possibility of changing the female only residents restriction at the 8th ave Armory to meet the overflow that will occur. -
but isn't 8th ave not really a city shelter, but one run by camba?
-
camba managers two other shelters which are also funded by NYC
