What's going on with Bar BQ?

.....next time you are there (5x5) ask them about that name!

Okay! I'll report back soon!

Well, now you sold me, and I feel like a proper jerk for getting all snotty and indignant.
I missed the Harpoon night, but I will definitely stop by sometime. -
Nah, no worries. Change isn't always easy, and I didn't think you were snotty or indignant, and I am one who knows!

Maybe I'll see you around--I'm usually in a corner reading.
Flexichick, I was there last night and completely forgot to ask about the name. (Small brain doesn't hold a whole lot of info.) I'll try to remember next week. Sorry! -
no worries, I'm just curious. BTW, check out the WT board as we try to name a new bar (without the owner asking us, but we can try! )

Oh, now I have to put my clever hat on!

Subject: FACTS
The new owners told the previous owner that they would not be keeping the current staff of Bar B Q to run Safe Haven by themselves, and then proceeded to hire new staff. The fact is that the owner of THE Q was the bearer of bad news but it was Safe Haven that that made the decision to can everbody. It's a small neighborhood, word gets around.
And since when does the neighborhood that I love need a "SAFE HAVEN", there is nothing to be afraid of. -

Yep, that's what i was told as well. Not a good entré into a 'nabe...part of the reason I have not stopped in...that and the paint job on the front

But they haven't hired anyone, other than a friend of theirs to help out when things get busy, as far as I know (and I'm there fairly often). It's just the four owners running the place. I don't think they have or had any money to keep the former staff on--and the kitchen's just opening tonight, which means that Bar BQ's staff would have been on stand-by without pay for a couple of months.

Obviously, it's not a place you want to frequent, and that's fine. But I really think the owners of Safe Haven aren't evil--they're good guys, and I think the bar's a good, laid-back place.
I'll get back to you about the name--I think the question has been raised enough that I'm bound to remember to ask at last. -
Just an update: Went there last night at talked to Patrick, one of the owners. He, like the other bartender/owners, was very nice and friendly, and they seem eager to make it into a low-key, neighborhood place. They are working on running 10 beer lines in, and on getting more food on the menu. He promises a great burger soon. The kitchen is open with basic bar food. They do have great drink specials. You can get a shot of whiskey and a PBR tall boy for $6. (Trendy, I know.) It's much more relaxed than Toby's down the street, or Quarter.
-
And I finally remembered to ask about the name and was directed here-->

It's not really so bad--I don't think they're going for a "you need protection in the neighborhood" so much as a "home away from home" sort of thing. You might still hate it, but oh, well. No one really asked me for my opinion.
-
5x5, thanks for the explanation. I still think it's a sucky name, but will give it a shot one day
-
Stopped in last night for a few beers. Fine place, but no "vibe" at all. Nice bartender, but she was not one of the owners, thus they are not the ONLY ones working, so there goes that B.S.
If the place gets a "vibe" (they did fix the place up, but like most "newness" lacks character), and with the happy hour killer prices, it could become a good neighborhood joint, in sharp contrast to Kitchen Bar or Toby's (which is seeming more like a frat house every time I pass it).
Read their "bio" on their blog...perhaps a pseudo nautical theme? (joking!)
And they still need to repaint the front! -
Sorry it took so long, Flexichick! I usually drink too much to remember. I can understand not liking the name...I think I'm in the vast minority...I don't mind it.
lostingreenwoodheights, I'm sorry--I didn't mean to spread BS, I was just reporting back what I'd heard--can't really add on anything to support or deny others who work there and their relationship to the owners. I've no idea. I've known Noel (one of the owners) for years and so far, he's always been pretty straightforward with me, especially in answering this thread's questions, so I will investigate.
(Obviously, I need a hobby or two.) -
5x5,
Hey, no biggie. Hire whomever they want. I just have a friend who would have LOVED staying if they had kept any or all of the original staff from BBQ.
I'm on the other side of the fence now and pulling for them to be successful.
-
Oh, good, and yay! Now I just have to get some of you into Safe Haven on a Tuesday night--I'm usually there reading, but I'm always glad to share a drink and some conversation. Let me know if you'll be around!
-
Saw they FINALLY changed the front yesterday. Black is back...which matches their burgundy and black interior...still looking for a cohesive look.
Thank goodness the front is redone!
Howdy, Stranger!
