Hey gang,
New to the area (the wife and I just moved back to the states from Paris [a tear]).

Anywho, the wife and I just bought a beautiful, 3br/2bath condo (whew), and are fresh to the terrain. We LOVE the area.... But ALL of the local businesses and resta seem to be SO expensive. Where do I get the deals in the slope!?

Also, and lastly, do y'all meet up regularly somewhere? Like weekly? Anyway, that's all for now. See you on the flipside!

  • Maybe you should've rented. But I'm sure you got a good deal....
  • Cocette, a cozy French American restaurant on Park Slope's 5th Avenue, offered two for one gourmet dinners Tuesday evenings. Malheureusement, Cocette's rent was raised and it went out of business like several other restaurants this year.

Are any local restaurants currently offering two for one dinners of full priced portions and quality on any days?

To save money on fresh produce, skip the farmer's market at Grand Army Plaza and go to Chinatown in Sunset Park or Manhattan. A Trader Joe's just opened in Downtown Brooklyn.

To spend a lot of money on rotten food, shop at the most expensive Key Food in the world on 7th Avenue and Carroll Street.

So, uh, where do I find the deals on condos?
  • Sorry but, WTF?!? You come from Paris buy up a cheap (dollar is down like hell) or expensive because obviously you have a couple million, and ask us where to get cheap eats during one of the hardest times in the US economy? Do you know anything about the gentrification of brooklyn?

(edit to add: sorry to be rude, my apologies, I'm really stressed out about putting food on my table right now)
  • Mamacita is right. you don't make much sense. A 3 bedroom apartment in park slope is not cheap. Therefor you are obviously a man of means. If you were renting a 1 bedroom apartment I would understand.

Anyway, welcome to the best area in Brooklyn. I am sure you would love the place more and more as you discover new things and meet new people. All the best.....
  • Welcome...newbie :-)
  • Damnit, I leave for 5 minutes and everyone kills the n00bs without me :(

You guys take away all my fun.
  • I'm sorry, I should have sad:

    "welcome...newbie...now get the fuck out".

i'm getting soft in my old age :-(
  • Maybe newbie wanted to let us know that he had plenty of space for us to party at his place?

Maybe newbie is a real estate agent trying to raise awareness of condo deals?
  • C'mon guys, be nice to the newbie.

    No hazing!!!

  • Kill newbie, kill newbie! Bring Carnivore fresh newbie meat.
  • If, after this remarkably gracious welcome, you are still anxious (willing?) to meet up with the sometimes raucous denizens of this board, keep your eyes on the stickies at the top of the board. There are no regularly scheduled meetings, but there are occasional meetups when people have ideas that appeal to others... such as a bar crawl or a bike ride.

    Bienvenue à Brooklyn!
  • we're really not that bad. Promise. Especially me. I'm pretty awesome.
  • I know you guys will agree that I am a nice person. In doubt? Go back and read my over a thousand nice posts but in this case,,, HOUSE POOR...that is the concept. People who buy a residence (no matter where) and leave the closing with not a pot to piss in are just fools .

And then they come to a forum and ask about how to get "deals" in a neighborhood where they can't afford to live in their multi million dollar domicle, while other people are truly struggling to live in their little studio or sharing (make that over sharing space) here because they LOVE living here.. well no sympathy on my end. Frankly, if this thread continues it should be a list of all the incredibly high priced places in PS that any consumable can be bought.

My guess is that the OP will never return to read these posts but if this person does all we have really done is to provide a REALISTIC introduction to this forum and this neighborhood.
  • I'm generally a lurker here, and occasional poster (my neighbors have chickens in their yard, y'all!), but I feel the need to speak up here.

Wow, everyone. Judgmental much? This guy reaches out to his new community and he gets crapped on. And so predictable, by the way -- the minute I read his post, I figured the welcome wagon would jump all over it with fangs flashing. Lovely. I think most people, after making a big investment like a home, tend to dial back on other expenses a little bit. And I don't think this guy was looking for "sympathy" -- just some insider info on his new 'hood. Well, I guess he got some, in that now he knows what a bunch of intolerant, trigger happy judges he's living next door to. WELCOME!

I am sure that this response will be equally as unpopular as the OP, and I am looking forward to a good old fashioned neighborly skewering. Let the shit storm commence!
  • Um, prices here aren't really different from Paris. You have your inexpensive burrito and chinese shops, and billions of moderate restaurants and a few really nice special occaision ones..........

If you're concerned about money tho, maybe get some renters in your palace!

When you tire of English, meet me at Beleville or something et on peut parler francais!

OT but did anyone read that article about people trying to live on $25 a week -- the amount given in food stamps? It was easier when it was a multi person family, but alone, people ate carbs carbs and fat and almost no fruits pr veggies.

Mamacita, does that mean we shouldn't go spend a few bills on consolation drinks?
  • Yeah, I registered just to say that I agree with torisoaw. You people are ridiculous. The person posted a few vague sentences and you all act like you know everything about his/her life story and financial situation. It's a good thing this board is not actually representative of Park Slopers, whom I personally find generally delightful (in real life, that is).
  • Scarlett Dahling, drinks are the one thing I won't cut from my budget. :D
  • Have to agree, I think some people are way out of line here. The OP wasn't asking for sympathy, just some suggestions. Nothing less, nothing more. No one here can discern what his/her financial situation by a vague mention of the purchase of a condo. Is it really so hard just to extend kindness to a stranger who has done you no wrong and is doing nothing more than asking for suggestions? Wow. Just wow. The OP did nothing to deserve some of the responses that were doled out. I really don't understand it. Are you just bitter? Angry that he/she can afford a place and then has the gall to still seek deals? By that logic, are you suddenly precluded from trying to seek value the moment you become a homeowner? Give me a break. And more importantly, give the OP a break.
  • have to agree with the dude, mamacita and veets came across like assholes
  • Seriously you guys are a bunch of bullies... give the OP a break and while you're at it give me a fucking break..

I'm just a hardly working drunk trying to put food (and the finest single malts) on my table.. trying to feed my kids, trying to buy my wife nice toys from that sex shop... just an old school guy trying to get by.

I come to this board to find out about changes to restaurant menus, car accidents, happy hours... you know, the important shit.
  • You guys are taking this board way too seriously.
  • Mamacita wrote: You guys are taking this board way too seriously.

the internet is serious business. DUR
  • Mamacita,

    Thanks for the comment, but....

There is no room on this board for stating the obvious.. for logic, for goodwill, for common sense or any other such thing that disguises itself as any of the above.

I won't stand for it. Not today, not any day. Not here.

Drunken Revival's married with kids? Who knew?

  • I know, right? You wake up one day and BANG!!

You are married with two kids, a job, you don't own a bong anymore and Sunday mornings are spent at a little league game rather than in bed spanking some girl whose name you never even knew.

I think it may have been the bong's fault in the first place.

Welcome to the slope! We all meet every Friday at a place called Le Trapeze on 27th Street in the city. I'm the guy that says "oochie coochie" when someone else's genitalia rubs up against mine. Come down, figure out who I am.
