    One of the two facing bars on Garfield was called Stack Of Barley

    I remember Wing Wah, not in a good way.

    Who remembers Gazebo Resturant?

    I was trying to remember last night the name of the bar on 7th Av
    which sometimes had whole fish on the sidewalk for $1, after the owners had been on a party boat. It was somewhere between Flatbush and Union, was it Gaslight?

    they used to sell just-caught fish (bluefish, mainly, i recall) on the sidewalk on berkeley, up slightly from 7th, towards the rear of what is now mr wonton.. i'd forgotten until you mentioned it. wonton at the time was indeed the gaslight.

    and not to be too nostalgic, but do you recall when there was a little mexican take-out place squeezed into the back portion of gaslight? that was right-after santa fe moved-into what-was an ice cream shop, and before mexican restaurants became ubiquitous in the 'neighb.

    it's a really nice looking real estate office. the people are very friendly and un-broker-like and they had an opening tonight with wine.

    the place looks really cool. nice style.

    and I also want to say that the "storefront" itself is more beautiful now than it ever was as peek a boo kids, and even the fabric store, which was great.

    it now has some of it's actual pre-war charm instead of flourescent lighting and grey carpet, which is what it looked like previous.

    there are MORE than enough other empty storefronts along 7th to satisfy things that you consider not to be a waste. a couple on this block alone, in fact...

    nothing wrong with having a beautiful office there! peek a boo was truly frightening. how do you make a store UGLIER once you move in?!I like the real estate place across the street too, looks casual; they always have art hanging...makes it almost...human.

    agreed, chipster. the one across the street looks very homey. they also have all those plants in the window. a huge ficus, if i'm not mistaken.

    peek a boo was a total eyesore.

    Does anyone remember the catapult that was parked on 10th St and 5th Ave.? We used to take lepers and launch them to smash them against the castle walls. anyone remember?

    Subject: hospital on Garfield

    The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, available on line through the Brooklyn Public Library, might be a good place to look for an answer to the mystery of the hospital on Garfield.

    It was the old Baptist Hospital. They used to have their entrance on Garfield, that's probably why I remember it as being on Garfield.
    It's strange seeing all of the changes in the area at times.
    My Uncle used to have an off license on 7th avenue in the building that Astoria Federal tore down when they expanded in the late 80's.
    To get old huh?

    I DO , I DO !

    there was also a variation on that called
    " bowling for crack-ho's "
    which really just meant rolling the catapult (and lepers) to 3rd ave.
