  • Hilarious, I was just checking in after you called me to see if anyone else said what is going on here. But alas you and I have the same info.
  • ok.. I walked down there. Apparently, there was someone on a roof on Tompkins (maybe the church on the corner there?) and for some reason the cops tazered him. (I'm assuming it was a him) He fell to the street below and died. WTF?

Does anyone have any more information on this? I have to say, many of the cops down there were laughing and joking with each other. I mean, I understand that it's another working day for the boys in blue, but someone died there, quite possibly because of a cop's poor judgement.

    sketch.
  • I was looking for more info too. News vans everywhere, but no news yet. The only new information I can provide is that the man on the roof was naked, talking crazy. Still, this I got from my neighbors. The cop I asked said he was asked to stand there all afternoon, but had no idea why (nice!). But yeah, everyone in uniform seemed too damn chipper on that corner. I thought it was a parade at first.

I'm still disturbed by the unsolved murder/shooting at Potomac Playground over Labor Day weekend. Hundreds of people at that basketball tourney and no one saw a thing? Please.

Suddenly, the block is hot. And not in a good way.
  • thanks for the link. very sad story. another mentally ill person to whom our city agencies, through negligence or ignorance or hubris, have contributed their deadly blow in a preventable demise. shame!!!!!!
  • Its a real shame considering the guy only fell about 10 ft. One would think that the ESU officers would have stepped up to at least try to break the guy's fall.
  • Seriously, this ordeal is pretty shameful. It'll be interesting to see how this latest taser controversy plays out.

And if anyone has any update on the Potomac Playground shooting, please post. I haven't found any talk of this anywhere, and it's disconcerting.

    Thanks!

    COPS IN NUDE TASER SLAY
By JOHN DOYLE, JAMIE SCHRAM and ERIC LENKOWITZ
Police fired a Taser at a naked Brooklyn man armed with only a fluorescent light tube yesterday, sending him falling to his death from a second-floor ledge after he went on a 40-minute rant. Iman Morales' mom begged cops not to hurt her son, telling them he's sick - then watched in horror as he plunged from the top of the roll-down gate on which he'd been perched. An Emergency Services officer, acting on the orders of his boss, fired at the 35-year-old man at around 2 p.m., as he waved the 8-foot fluorescent light tube, police sources said. "His body froze up and he fell face-first," said Sean Johnson, who witnessed the drama at 489 Tompkins Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Morales, who crashed 10 feet to the pavement, died a few hours later at Kings County Hospital.

  • What a horrible incident...and how completely awful that the Post thought it was a good idea to print those pictures.
  • I know- the person who shot the video pulls away just as he falls.

    So so sad.
  • "She was saying, 'No! No! Don't hurt him. He is sick,' " Wright said.

With police shouting for him to get down, Morales made his way to a ledge above a the gate.

"Walk down now! Move down!" the police can be heard shouting to him on video.

He then picked up the light tube and waved it in the air before jabbing cops who had climbed out of the windows above.

"When he was poking the cop, people were laughing," Johnson said.

He refused orders from the officers and continued his incoherent tirade.

Finally, one of the ESU cops on the street shot him with the Taser.

"He just fell face first," said witness Sean Brown. "People were screaming and yelling. It was wrong."

It was unclear what set off the episode, but, said Johnson, "once he started hitting the cop with that pole, that's when it turned serious."
There is the problem, he started poking the cops the a light bulb, making everyone laugh at the cops. Then they had to kill him. You can't let a man live after he makes people laugh at you. Especially if he his naked.

The pictures are horrible, but it certainly gives you a _real_ feel for the horror of the whole situation, and prevents the police from being able to sweep it under the rug as easily. He was clearly crazy, but not threatening to anyone in a way that required immediate deadly force.
  • I think they figured if he fell, he wouldn't fall far- which is retarded. They shot before thinking.

  • Update: Cops involved may be charged...
The NYPD officer who ordered that a nude, emotionally disturbed man be shot with a Taser causing him to topple off a ledge to his death has been placed on modified duty and stripped of his gun and shield, officials said today.

Top brass at the NYPD ruled that the lieutenant in charge of the Brooklyn situation in which Inman Morales fell 10 feet head first onto the pavement "appears to have violated guidelines" for the use of the device.

"The order to employ the Taser under these circumstances appears to have violated guidelines, re-issued June 4, 2008, which specifically state that "when possible, the [device] should not be used in situations where the subject may fall from an elevated surface,"
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said in a statement.

The lieutenant has been "placed on modified assignment," Browne said. The officer who fired the Taser has been placed on administrative duty.

He added that the Brooklyn district attorney's office has asked that the NYPD not question either officer - leaving open the possibility that criminal charges may be applied later.
  • Here's an article from the Times on the use of Tasers violating NYPD guidelines

I guess the officers involved are being temporarily reassigned, pending investigation. Of course, next week something new will happen and nothing will get done. Boo-urns.
  • So, the Lt. who ordered the victim tasered has killed himself.
  • Whatchuwant wrote: So, the Lt. who ordered the victim tasered has killed himself.
    wow. where'd you hear this?
  • What a horrible tragedy for the lieutenant, who I truly felt made an honest terrible mistake, and for Mr. Morales.
  • It's a tragedy, but here's something to think about...He made a very bad call in both instances, one involved the live of someone else, the other his own life, I hope there are not many officers such as this on the force and that they do better training and psychological evaluations of officers in the future.
