Meet snuggly Tripod, the three legged kitty

Is anyone looking to adopt a cute cat with a missing back paw?

(Her picture is on my avatar on the left here.) She be-friended my neighbor and I brought her home last night to see how she gets along with my other cat. However, little Tripod LOVES humans but isn't keen on her own kind.

If anyone wants to adopt a truly sweet, got-all-her-shots, about to be spayed half grown kitty, who wants to have her people all to her herself, let me know.

Thanks!

  • oh, how cute! Have you thought about giving her a few more days to get settled in with your cats?
  • Well, I have no choice as she is here but the whole point of getting another cat ws to keep little Leroy company. However, while Tripod is the cutest when Leroy is kept outside -- super affectionate and funny -- once Leroy comes in she attacks him.

Not quite what we had in mind. He was attacked as a youngster so he gets a little freaked out though he's been super calm through all the excitement.
  • i will say that both times we've gotten second cats, there's been much fighting early on and companionship later.

i thought our one cat was only barely tolerating living with the new bully (my childhood cat who came to live with us in her old age), but when the bully died, the original cat -- who had always lived alone just fine before -- was inconsolable.

so we got her another cat, whom she fought with and carried on about. now she comes to complain until we rescue him when he gets locked in the closet and fusses when he's sick.

    cats, man. go figure.
  • it definitely takes a while for them to sort out their dynamics.....my first girl cat was so pissed off when I brought home Jackson. I had never heard her hiss or growl before that. They turned out to be great companions (until she died)
  • Subject: reassure me here

Hmmm, this is very interesting. The hubby may not have the patience I do.

Sweet new cat Tripod is REALLY attacking Leroy and forcing him out the kitchen window to escape. You would think HE would be the pissed one, but it's her, the newcomer. Her busted back paw looks like it might have been severed in the last months and has healed. Not sure if it made her get picked on by other cats in the wild or what.

Do other "cat experts" have any advice?
  • Many "experts" suggest separating cats for a few days and then slowly introducing them. Can you section off your apartment or keep one (likely Tripod) in the bathroom? Allow them to smell each other under the door...they may even try to poke each other under the door.

Eventually let them near each other, supervising and/or holding one (probably Tripod, the aggressor) until they play nice. If Tripod gets all stinky on Leroy (great name, btw), back in the bathroom Tripod goes until she gets the message that she has to play nice.
  • i have no idea if this helps or just entertains me, but i used to do a lot of petting one cat and then the other, to force them to get each others' scent on them.

also, it's good to give both cats affection at the same time, i.e., you pet one cat while hubby pets the other.

cats are very territorial. my armchair psychologist guess is that tripod thinks she has to banish the other cat or you won't keep loving her.
  • It's also a factor that she has yet to be spayed as well. She's had to protect herself from all the dudes trying to get with her. So, this could be just a knee jerk reaction- "male in my presence!"

Sex doesn't look very fun from the female kitty perspective, from what I've seen.
  • You can also try putting a few drops of Rescue Remedy (found in most holistic/natural food stores). It's a natural anxiety supplement that helps calm cats down. Since she hasn't been spayed and has to be extra tough with only three legs, taking something to calm her nerves as she realizes your kitty is a good guy may help.

I agree that separating them for a bit may be good too. The petting option sounds logical as well. Good luck! It can be hard when the pecking order isn't naturally established.
  • RenoQueen - how's it going with them? Give us an update, please
