Moving to bay ridge - how long to the city

Hi, I am thinking about moving to Bay Ridge. I was wondering how long the average commute is to Manhattan from about 86st.

  • It depends quite a bit on where in Manhattan........if you don't have to wait for an express train at 59th or 36th, you can get to RockCtr in about 45 minutes from 86th Street. If you are unlucky with the express transfer, a trip to midtown can take an hour.
  • Downtown takes around 40 min on the local.

Not true. you would be taking the r train and it would take at least 45-50 minutes, more likely longer as the trains run like sh*t. you can even almost double that if you are coming home during rush hour.

It is affordable to live there, but you would be better off getting a roommate or two and move in manhattan.
  • go to hopstop.com, check out exactly how long it will take to get from where you'd be living to where you'd be going in manhattan.

I lived out there this summer, and it always seemed to take forever. It's a pain to transfer to the N express at 59th, and even the N goes local (runs like the R) after midnight and sometimes on weekends. Also, I don't know if this is common because I was only there for three months, but there were CONSTANT interruptions on the N line, it was always being rerouted or delayed.

the trains in central brooklyn (prospect heights, crown heights, park slope, gowanus, fort greene etc.) are much more reliable and the commute is MUCH more managable.

if you're going to be in manhattan every day, i would STRONGLY suggest looking further north in Brooklyn.
  • Takes me a solid 45 minutes to get to midtown from the 59th St stop during rush hour. More if I'm really unlucky with delays. Off-peak hours are pretty good--35 to 40 minutes. Depending where you live, you would probably have to budget another 10 to 15 minutes to transfer from the R.

Have to agree with maggie about the N train--it seems to runs local all the time lately. Weekends are an annoyance. But if you're not a night owl, it really shouldn't be too much of a pain.
  • By the way, I think Bay Ridge is a great area. It's overpriced, but nowadays, everywhere is.
  • That's what I get for skimming. To actually answer your question: It's about another 15 minutes from 86th st to 59th. So to midtown, about an hour.
  • I have found hopstop to be incorrect at times (no offence maggiebk) I like the trip planner on www.mta.info .The link is on the right side midway down the page.
  • Maggie, you're so right that there are always rerouting issues on the N train. i lived there for years until one night it took me 2 freaking hours to get home from the village. my strategy for weekends became to drive to the 62nd street/new utrecht ave station because more than 1 train stops there, increasing my chances of being able to get home. another friend always drove to 36th street.

if you plan to spend lots of time in manhattan on the weekends, you might well spend what you save on living in a cheaper area on taxis and car service.

that said, i have been pretty impressed with how quickly the N runs during rush hour lately.
  • I'm on the D line at Bay Parkway and it's 45 minutes to Middtown from here, on average

I just noticed this so I figured I'd update and confirm -- I've been commuting btwn the 77th st stop and broad st during rush hour daily for over a year and it normally takes me around 40min staying on the R the whole way. Late night is MUCH worse since they cut R service down dramatically. I guess it would take a little longer from the end of the line but 40 min IS true from 77th.
  • Nobody mentioned the X27/37 MTA express buses. During business hours, this is the way to go. I used to catch the X37 from 69th and Colonial to my job at 5th Ave @ 23rd St every morning. It was like 20-25 minutes.

My current office is on 125th St so I take the X27 to its first stop in Manhattan and take the IRT express train from there (free transfer). The bus part of the trip takes as little as 12 minutes.

The downside is that it's five bucks and if you catch it near the end of its Brooklyn leg there's almost no chance of a getting a seat.
