local car mechanic?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
i know we've posted about this before, but i wanted to get a more timely idea of where i could find a decent mechanic in the area. (there's another thread about body work. me, i have a bad thumping noise under the hood...)

i'm tired of getting ripped off and cheated, which i always feel like i do. and the only garage i currently trust is in new jersey.

recommendations? stories?

  • I too would appreciate any mechanic recommendations. I have a transmission problem (I think, though I seriously hope I'm wrong) and have been putting off taking it somewhere because the only mechanic I trust is in long island and I really don't want to drive this car out that far with the problem it has.

arg. sometimes I hate having a car.
  • We've been going to our mechanic now for 20 years, he has worked on every car we have ever owned (Honda, Mazda, Subaru, Toyota). He is honest and trustworthy. if something doesn't need to be done, he won't do it. I have recommended him to others in the past who went to him and were very pleased. He is about 5 minutes from the Slope, PM me for his info if you are interested.

I assume the link above is to the garage OTB is talking about.

Thanks OTB, from the reviews it sounds like a great option!
  • Great Bear - 4th Avenue, between Garfield and 1st.
    Good mechanics and nice guys.
  • We used to take the car to Atlas on Vanderbilt, but they got Ratnered away and the guys there relocated to Precision Auto on Atlantic and Brooklyn Ave. They don't seem to be there anymore, but Eric, the guy who runs Precision, is a really great guy who does a hell of a job. Not exactly "in the neighborhood," but the best I can recommend.

We have gone to Strauss on 4th by Prospect Ave. a couple of times, and had nothing to complain about there as well.
  • I go to Sammy's Auto Repairs on 15 street between 3rd & hamilton. Sammy is a real honest guy and he's been service the whole family for over 25 years.
He owns and operates his shop. He does inspections too! Nice guy and his prices are fair.
    Good luck!
  • I used Minhs Auto for some years. They're more than reliable imo. They email me when my inspection or oil change is due, i like that. You will know you wont be cheated here, they always take and show me pictures of whats damaged and saves the parts for me to examine and explain car issues to me pretty well. They're on 3rd Ave & 16th st or check out http://www.minhsautocare.com
  • Minh's is great. I've gone to them for years. They let me sleep in the back of my van while they put new struts on the front! I have an 87 Landcruiser they've worked miracles on also.

I second that. jerry is the best.
  • i'm going to go to minh's tomorrow, after the recommendations here. will keep you posted.

    thanks everyone!
  • update: i went to minhs, and loved it.

tam, the owner, was really helpful and didn't talk to me as though i was six. the fees were low and he seemed really honest and nice. i'll go back. !
  • what ended up being the problem with your car?
  • some kind of tire joint, and a piece of plastic that got dislodged when i got hit, so every time i hit a bump the plastic thumped in the wheel well.
  • Tam is Minh's son. A nice guy also. He brought Minh into the 21st century.
  • I've been using

    http://www.superiorcarcare.net/

They mostly do my oil changes/ inspections but they did fix the check engine light once (it was a software bug they had to download and patch) but they charged me less than the estimate

I just wanted to also throw in a good review for Minhs. Based on what I read here I decided to try them out. I took our car in last week to have the power window repaired and they were really great. They were fast, price seemed average (based on my internet research), and all around nice.

When I went to pick up the car it was a busy traffic time down there and Tam had the repair guy pull my car around to face the other way so I wouldn't get caught in the traffic heading toward the expressway. In the rain even.

    Two thumbs up!

  • and they clean your car!!!
  • Subject: GOOD EXPERIENCE @ MINH'S AUTO REPAIR

I too had a good experience at Minh's Auto...

    Fast, efficient, good price.

My guy upstate only charges $45/hr for repairs and is completely honest, so it's hard to compair.

In the NYC area, no bad news is good news!!!

I am a merchant mariner and only live here 2 out of every 4 weeks.

THIS BLOG WAS VERY VERY HELPFUL!!

    THANKS ALL!
