Mounting satellite to roof — Brooklynian

Mounting satellite to roof

Hello everyone,

I am interested in switching from the awful Time Warner to DirecTV but my landlord is hesitant to allow installation of the dish. He is concerned that bolting it to the building will be bad. I spoke to DirecTV and they say it can be done without bolting anything to the building however I am not super confident that the person I spoke to knew what he was talking about. So I'm hoping someone here has gone through something like this and can confirm for me that DirecTV is able to mount the dish without putting holes in the building.

Also, on a side note, how is the internet service that DirecTV provides? Not sure if we will switch that too or stay with TW.

Thanks!

  • I go way back with DirecTV. I have 5 dishes which I mounted myself back when you could go to Best Buy and buy the thing yourself. I've had ocassion to call the service people a few times since then. They are pretty good, better then the TW people. You'll get a phone call from the local installer, you can explain the problem. They are all independent contractors and I think they get more work if they solve problems. There is a strapping method I've seen used that works. FWIW, they do have the right to install. It's like the cable or phone company, they can fasten their stuff to the building using approved methods. It depends on how big an asshole you want to be with your Landlord. If the LL is worried about a bunch of dishes, there is a way to install one dish for the entire building with one switching box.
Don't know about the internetz on the Dish however
  • Hee hee you said mount
  • they can attach without bolting, and modsquad is correct, by law your landlord has to allow it.

forget internet from the dish, it's a fortune and crappy. however, i'm really happy with everything else about my dish. best, it's not time warner cable.

I believe th law is referring to mounting a dish in a private area that is the exclusive access of the owner/shareholder/tneant e.g. a balcony with no other access but through the apt.

Isn't satellite internet only 1 way, download, but you have to have a dialup connection to upload?
  • I'm still jonesing for FIOS, if only to get away from TW fast enough to leave skidmarks.

Anybody have any FIOS updates? I keep putting my address in, but no real update yet
  • odd. so we have the right to cable tv but not to a dish. ??

Yup, and this makes me incredibly angry. No right to choose.

The Evil Empire (Time Warner) strikes again
  • My last landlord balked at the idea but once it was there he didn't mind. Can they put it on your roof? I'm sure he just doesn't want a dish hanging off the side of his building.
  • It was really the putting holes into the building that they had a problem with. However, they have now agreed to it but they want me to sign something saying I will be responsible for any damages to the building. Not sure how I feel about that since it's over 100 years old and could fall apart on it's own, whether or not there is a dish attached. Think I'm going to do it anyway.
  • My last landlord was also a prick about this so the installers rigged something with cinder blocks. It only lasted until the first big storm, at which point I just starting using free ghetto cable split off of my TW internet connection.

The best part was that when I went to the roof with the installers there were already a couple of dishes that the LL didn't know about. I love getting punished for trying to do the right thing...
  • FWIW, our building has more than 20 dishes on the roof. I discovered recently that DirecTV can replace all those dishes with one dish and a switcher of some sort. I'm going to try to get the landlord on board because some of my coax cables are wearing out after rubbing on the brick for more than 10 years.
  • Subject: direct tv on roof

I have been encouraging all of tenants to get sat. t.v.
    Time Warner is horrible.
The landlord should not be worried, because they attach it to the parapet wall. The only thing is, they have to make sure that the wires are connected to the walls, and not running across the roof. This is a fire department violation.
Otherwise, sat. t.v. is a great way to get rid of Time Warner.
