Mugging on Prospect Place (btwn. Grand Classon)
Just A Public Service Announcement: Friend & neighbor in my building was mugged last night (10/6/2008) around 10:30 pm on Prospect Place (btwn. Grand & Classon). Friend was coming home approaching our building and was accosted by a young fellow in hoodie asking for directions. The assailant wouldn't let my friend pass and all of a sudden he was surrounded by 4 to 5 other "yutes" wearing hoodies and holding something metal to his neck, while rifling through his pockets & bag. Lost cell, wallet, etc. Punks demanded pin numbers but friend provided fake ones. The crew tried to withdraw cash (got nada) but were successful in charging several metrocards to the credit cards.
Friend called cops (the ol' 77 pct.) who were serious and helpful. They all drove around for 30 mins. looking for the punks - to no avail.
So that's it in a nutshell. Keep an eye out for this M.O. especially as the economy is nose diving.

Sorry to hear about your friend's loss but glad he/she is okay. I hope your friend tells the police that Metrocards were charged to the card because (and KWAC may be able to confirm) these charged cards are traceable. -
Thanks. He did actually, and the police are (hopefully) reviewing the CCTV tape at the station.
-
Wow glad that he is alright! Thanks for the heads up. I live on that block too and it's scary to know that people are being mugged outside my door! :x We should all keep looking out for each other.
-
I always say the best approach to this is the fake wallet. Get a cheap wallet and put a bunch of crap in there, expired credit and Metro cards, old health insurance cards (provided they don't have your social). Put like $3 in there. If you're coming home late, keep this fake wallet in your regular pocket and stash your real wallet somewhere hidden. If you get mugged, sell it like you're all upset and then hand the chumps a fake wallet with nothing but your old crap inside. You could do this with an old cellphone too but it might be too much to carry. Losing a wallet, though, is worth it because having to cancel everything and try to recover losses is an absolute nightmare.

Not to go off topic but isn't Prospect between Grand and Classon considered Crown Heights?
Washington Avenue is officially the border right? -

That's a very good idea, actually. And it wouldn't take up much space since I usually don't even bring my whole wallet when I go out late. So I can stash my good id/debit card in a secret pocket and put the "fake" wallet in my bag.
You're a cunning one Slappy. -
I'm totally doing this. thanks for the best idea I've heard in a while.
-
My block as well. Damn, sorry to hear about your friend.
-
Great idea Slappy. Never thought of that. Maybe put the credit cards and money in your socks. The fake wallet in your pocket.
-
im so into this fake wallet idea too!

Sigh. Well, I see this post has been moved to the CH board. But, I have been embroiled in this debate for a long time and I disagree that this part of Brooklyn is CH. Search around Brooklynian for the thread on this debate. The "source" that many rely upon to show that Washington is the border (an entry on PH in Prof. Jackson's Ency. of NYC) was written without any citations to historical sources, so I disagree that this book "ends the debate." In any case, whether you live in CH or PH I just wanted to apprise you guys of this crime. Also, apparently this crew also mugged some women on Eastern Parkway & Washington shortly after nabbing my neighbor (according to the cops) so be careful out there in PH/CH. -
any idea how old the kids were?

i moved it. i consider where i live (one block away) CH, although i certainly agree that the border is pretty meaningless in a case like this. if i could have cross-posted it to both boards, i would have.
part of the reason i moved is that, realistically, i thought people living east of classon were more likely to be on that block heading home from PS/PH than the opposite. no doubt a brigade of vandy-dwelling shuttle riders will now shoot me down. -
I live on that block too. Somehow I seem to miss all this action
-
My block, too - what side of the street was this on? Closer to Grand or to Classon? About how old were the muggers? I can't see it being any of the kids that live on the block, but I also can't see this going on without them hearing/seeing something about it, either...
Keep an eye out for this M.O. especially as the economy is nose diving.
Sorry, but this makes me snicker - I hardly think that these muggers are keeping an eye on the market nor do I think that they're going to feel the ripples that far down on the economic ladder... not yet, at least. It might feel nice to justify the actions as the result of a (temporarily, we hope) flailing economy, but the fact is that it's more a result of individual assholes that feel that they can prey on unwitting marks. Keep an eye out, be vigilant, yes, but don't think that the problem is going to disappear when the Dow makes it's way back to 12k. -
Haven't been on here for a while, but maybe we should carry a fake bag, too. Or act like our fake selves. Better yet, just become.....fake altogether.
-
I bet those kids were just worried about their 401ks
The only reason the nose diving economy would lead to more of this is if working people started to leave the area. -
I bet those kids wanted to impress each other by ganging up on one person, and then used the $ to buy some weed.

I was wondering where you had went off to! Good to see you! -

And so the life-size cut-outs began to appear...wearing ipods, talking on their cell phones, and haphazardly dangling LV bags. -

that would be excellent. We could store the cuts outs in our unused bank vaults.... -

....or we could do kind of a Madame Tussaud's thing, and make potential victims from wax. Might be a bad idea during the summer months.
Anyone been to Tussaud's? Do they have one of Paris Hilton? Think they would lend it to Caa and I? -
My understanding was that the kids were 19-21 years old. The yoking took place on the North-side of Prospect Place, closest to Grand.
And, yeah, good point, these kids are probably too far down the economic ladder to be reacting to the Dow Jones dipping below 8700. BUT . . . consider this, ignoring the possibility that the punks may be trying to impress each other or joining a gang or looking for $$ to buy weed, perhaps these barely-high school educated kids can't get a job or are too poor to go to college/trade school (or can't take out loans). So, instead, out of boredom or necessity, they are robbing people on the streets. So, on some level, it may be economy-related. -
Crime has always been "economy related" on that level. Somethings will never change.
Sorry to hear about your friend. Glad he wasn't hurt; glad he didn't do anything stupid, like risking his safety for a wallet.
...you've got far more to lose than the kids mugging you. -

Ah, makes sense - people are usually hanging out near the Classon end of things... but there's not much room to hide in waiting, near Grand... did they come from around the corner or something? And I suppose that it took place too far away from The Spot for that to be a viable haven... sucks, man. -

Subject: The Border
ChristinafromBklyn wrote:Not to go off topic but isn't Prospect between Grand and Classon considered Crown Heights?
Enough with this Prospect Height/ Crown Heights border issue already... who cares!
Washington Avenue is officially the border right?
It comes up constantly, I almost feel like there should be a specific board where people can rehash and argue over this issue to their heart's content.
The neighborhoods border each other, that is something we can all agree on. Residents of this section of Brooklyn cross between the two and conduct business in both of them on a daily basis. What is the point of endlessly talking about where one begins and the other one ends? -

One point and why there is constant back and forth on this topic is that when a potential renter or homeowner hears that the prospective property is in "Crown Heights" they freak out. Begin having visions of mid-day shoot outs, rampant crime, loud music, run-down buildings, no services, no shops..... need I say more. Instead of actually spending the time to go out and look at the n'hood, they run away to some presumably "safer" n'hood and get gouged on their rent or purchase price.
As residents, we know there is a big difference between Rochester and St. Marks and Sterling Place and New York Avenue, or Sterling Place and Classon Avenue for that matter. But some guy from Virginia hasn't a clue so the tendency is ask what n'hood a property is in and draw his own conclusions.
