Hello! I am new to the area and have recently noticed car windows having writing on them..usually random letters and numbers with window ink. Well my car now has something odd on it. Does it mean anything?? It says "3 to R" Ive noticed others with random letters and dates. Does not look like vandalism. Anyone know??

  • well if someone wrote on your car, and it was not you it was probably vandalism.

the only quasi related thing i can think of is that your car was towed as a relocation tow and the 3 to R was a note so the tow truck knew where to put it back.

where you parked near the Fringe shooting on 11th ave and 16th st by any chance?

coned and verizon have also been known to do that when they need to access a manhole.
  • I don't think I was parked anywhere wrong. it doesn't look like vandalism...I've noticed it on other cars before. It's small and on my backseat window. Parked nowhere near the location of the shooting for Fringe. Very odd!!
  • Often you see 4/s 50k 21000 7185551212

    car is For Sale $21,000 has 50,000 miles call 718 555 1212

It is illegal to put a for-sale sign on a car in New York City
  • If it is in yellow or white grease pencil, I think it means that the city has declared it abandoned and it is a code for the tow truck that comes and takes it away. Have you moved it recently?

If you're seeing it on other cars it's probably because they were recently towed and that stuff is a bitch to get off. My car still has some residue from the last time it was towed which was well over three months ago *yeah I'm lazy and don't wash my car.* Mine has always been on the passenger front window, though.
  • can you recall where you were parked when you first noticed the writing? I'm still going with a relocation tow as the most likely answer.

You don't have to be parked illegally. If someone like coned, verizon, dep, etc. need to get into a manhole, or a catch basin or something they will tow your car away and then put it back when they are done.

Wow, I never knew that, I see signs on cars all the time for sale. Even did it myself a couple of years ago when selling my car! You learn something new every day!
  • I was parked on 6th btw 20th and 21st all day. My car is CONSTANTLY used so it's never an abandonment issue. I noticed it late last night though when I was parked on 21st btw 5th and 6th. I'm just confused by the situation.
