Crown Heights on rogers ave between st johns and sterling
My girlfriend is moving to her first apartment out of college and is looking at a place in Crown Heights on rogers ave. I just want to make sure that it will be safe for her to walk at night to and from the subways after a late night at work or on the weekends from the bars.
Any information of the area will be very helpfull. Thanks

Rogers and what? And where are you coming from? Which I ask to try and establish your comfort level. Is there any way you can visit the neighborhood?

I live right around the corner from there. Though my personal preference would always be to live on an east-west street, as opposed to a north-south one (cause there's usually less traffic), like Rodgers, the neighbor hood isn't bad. Please see my previous post below:

We now have a two-year old, but before the little one was born, my wife and I would both, either individually or together, stumble home drunk from one of the local watering holes in Prospect Heights every now and again. Could've been 3:am or 3:pm, we've never been hassled. Never been mugged. Never had our place broken into.
Like anywhere in the five burroughs, there are certainly particular blocks here and there that could lead to discomfort, but all in all, not bad. As a previous poster said, I would definitely come down and check the area out, particularly at night, to see what her comfort level is. There is a bar, Franklin Park, two blocks away on St. John's @ Franklin. Take the 2-3 or 4-5 to the Franklin Ave/Eastern Pkwy stop, and walk two blocks up Franklin to St. Johns to make a left. Have a few drinks, then walk around. Actually, there is another bar right there as well, 95 South.
I can't necessarily comment on where you are, in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, but the experience up near us has been that this is a tight, friendly, neighborly environment, with lots of folks who've been here their whole lives (community stability is a good thing). Sure, there's crime, and if you look hard enough, you won't have a problem finding it. But, for the most part, we've felt safe. Safe enough to raise our daughter here.
Enjoy. -
Rogers and St Johns. I'm from westchester so I'm a bit familiar with the city because I visit often and stay with friends. Bu unable to afford rent being that I'm still a student. And she is from upstate New York so is quite unfamiliar with the city. I want to make sure she doesn't get turned off of city living because she ends up in a neighborhood she doesn't feel comfortable with.
Thanks -

I'm a block over on Nostrand and St. Johns. The area is rapidly changing, but I'm of the opinion that unless your girlfriend is pretty open minded the area might be a bit of a shock and she might very well feel uncomfortable. I would _highly_ recommend a field trip, both day and night, and a bit of walking around. I don't think it is a highly dangerous area, but then it is one of only six precincts in all of NYC that have shown overall increases in crime. It is an Operation Impact area. There are shootings from time to time, and muggings and whatnot. Being a bit street savvy and aware of your surroundings goes a long way. Does this sound like your girlfriend? I'm not trying to scare you off, and I have four kids that I feel safe with here. BUT- this ain't the upper west side, and exactly what you fear doesn't seem totally out of the question to me. Oh yeah, and subways are reasonably close, three blocks to #3 Nostrand, a couple more to the express at Franklin, #2, 3, 4, & 5. -
It's completely possible that she won't feel too comfortable with that area. I mean, its in the middle of CH, so there will probably be some culture shock. She just can't let it show, cause they'll smell her from a mile away.
Is she a tough cookie? Or not so much... -
I've just ordered her the shirt so we've got that covered. We're going to see the place tomorrow and check out the neighborhood. She'll have to decide if she feels comfortable there or not when we explore. I hope she does but I want her to enjoy the city. Thanks for the comments I'll post an update after we've checked the place out.

Cool, good luck. Here is the bar mentioned above:

and here is a nice place to eat another block further:

It is a cool area, with the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, Museum, big library, Prospect Park, etc. all nearby. -
we live around the corner... this area gets a lot of foot traffic from the church on the corner, people are very neighborly as well - there are a bunch of kids around (including our 18 month-old)... ! hope you guys enjoy it...

i live around the corner, on st john's between rogers and nostrand. i just moved here from california. i feel safe walking home at night. everyone in the area is super friendly and welcoming.
Posts regarding KWAC have been moved here

Sorry if there's any confusion -
I also live nearby- two blocks away on Rogers and Park Place... I have been here for years with no incident. Like the previous posters have stated, the area is changing pretty rapidly and there is more traffic coming down Rogers than the other streets intersecting with it. There are congregating teenagers that can get kind of loud late at night, but that doesn't happen all that often and doesn't affect my life that much

Well, yah. Anyway. My posts regrading recent serious crime on the block got moved, but what I was trying to say _before_ it got moved was that the block isn't all peaches and creme. There _have_ been two murders that I have come home to on that _very_ block in the last year or so. I've had a couple other incidents too. Nothing horrible major. Well, I mean, murders are major, of course. Anyway. I don't want you to get the wrong idea that everything is purrrfect or anything. There are certainly ongoing issues, but it is moving in a good direction. I would say. And the rest depends on your comfort level.
In reference to moving my comments about the murders out of this thread, I'll try to be more cognizant of stating my facts in a way that isn't offensive to others in the future so that I can stay in the thread with the other kids.
Or not.

I'm a little torn about the area (I live down the street on Rogers). I lived in Washington Heights for about 8 years and it was block-by-block like anywhere in New York, and I generally didn't walk home alone, which served me well. There are still spotty areas there, with open drug activity and strung out people (enough to drag my brother down, but that’s another story). Still, even with problems that have persisted, the area around the GWB is bustling and generally safe.
Here in Crown Heights people have been very cool - I've met more neighbors than anywhere I've lived in the city, and the apartment is nice, subway is close, etc. That said, I got thrown off when I saw some beat cops on Lincoln Place, because after working in Community Board 7 in the Bronx I’ve come to quickly associate beat cops with Impact Zones (and yes, most of the Bronx is perfectly safe).
Turns out I was right, and I live next to single-room occupancy hotel for chronically homeless people with HIV/AIDS that’s run by PRAXIS. In general, the place is pretty well-run, and we’ve gotten to know the security and the super there, but there’s still a bit of loitering on Lincoln Place (and the garbage that ends up in our light well has included an old wallet, liquor bottles, condoms, pipes and needles – but to be fair, hasn’t been all that bad lately). Most people in the area seem fine, but you’ll see strung out people hanging around too. And there seems to be a pretty open drug trade around Franklin and Lincoln – the kids are pretty brazen.
I’ve talked to the neighbors a lot, and most of the more recent problems have been with the landlord, but they’ll tell stories of trouble in the area, like when one of the elderly people upstairs was mugged in our entryway, and when a guy down the street got slashed in the face at the BP on Bedford. Still, people think things have gotten better, which crime stats show, although some crime has picked up recently (murders are up, but assaults and property crimes are down this year).
Nonetheless, I’m moving out because the landlord is trying to push out the tenants of three of the six units (he has the most trouble with the most vocal tenant of course), all of which has caused endless problems. I’ll give him credit that he’s worked on fixing up the building, but true to form he hires incompetents, has a history of code violations, and tries to limit work on anything that could help the rent controlled tenants. We’ve had endless trouble with everything from sewage backups to a two-day electrical outage, and just in the last six months. I think it comes down to the fact that landlords in rougher areas are used to dealing with tenants they feel they can push around.
I’m pretty sure a guy was intent on mugging me on the Parkway the other day, and I’m still not sure what was going through his head when we lunged towards me (and then beyond me towards the traffic lanes). I have a bit of an attitude, but am a small woman, so who knows. I used to have a muggers wallet back in Washington Heights, but have gotten complacent lately. I never thought of throwing a few old credit cards in there, but I’m paranoid about people knowing my name, since my identity was stolen.
Anyway, I’ve never lived in an apartment without problems, so unless you luck out, it comes with the territory. As far as the area, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who hasn’t lived in a large city before – mostly for comfort – although they’d probably be fine.
Howdy, Stranger!
