On hitting people's cars while parking

Of course ! Its gonna happen, i know.
The problem is not people who occasionally kiss the bumper of the car behind them.
The problem is people who think the bumper is a target and dont give a dam if they smack your car HARD. (see many of these responses)
if
"its ok if i fuck up your car - bumpers are for bumping"
then
its ok if i fuck up your face, noses are for punching.
Bumper is to prevent damage to the vehicle in the case of an accident.
ACCIDENT being the operative word.
look it up if you dont know the meaning.
not
"oh gee haha i dont know how to drive this thing or bumpers are made for bumping"
( @ joerosato "you" in this context refers to the nebulous group "you"
not to YOU specifically as an individual) -
@garfuncky
"its ok if i fuck up your car - bumpers are for bumping"
The analogy is a little weak here.. noses are for smelling, not punching. As for the inferred general violence (you pointed out that the "you" is not me), I stick with my first point about the unnecessary displaced rage in all these posts. It seems like we are not trying to discuss a problem as much as to determine who to hang in the town square so we can 'once and for all' stop all dents, skuffs, etc, which is impossible. (i.e. Joe's OK and has a point.. but it's that other invisible bastard in the distance that is to blame). Punch a wall or something, leave the noses for smelling.
then
its ok if i fuck up your face, noses are for punching. -
I disagree... the analogy is apt. If someone thinks they have the right to fuck up my bumper, then I have the right to fuck up their face.
Not for a single, unintentional bump... but the guy who thinks he is going to get away with pushing my car backwards to increase the size of the space had better hope I don't see him doing it. -

Too bad I no longer bother with a car. It would almost be worth it to see the Park Slope reactions to my parking.

I agree that people shouldn't be playing bumper cars out there, but a small accidental bump or two when parking hardly messes up anyone's bumper.
As far as hitting people in the face with bicycle chains for bumping one's bumper, I suppose _that_ is a Park Slope thing. I'm glad calmer heads prevail in Crown Heights.

i never heard anyone carry on like this in chicago, by the way. with the exception of one lady who read me the riot act and demanded my insurance information for touching her new kia*, people there seemed to think that parking in a city meant tight spaces and bumper touching. i guess nyers are still adjusting to city life. no shame in that.
if you're that worried about trade-in value, maybe don't park on the street.
*i called my insurance company to let them know she might be calling, and they laughed. never heard anything else about it. -

This is pretty much what I was going to say. They're called bumpers for a reason.
OTOH, car manufacturers haven't helped much - now that they are painted along with everything else, bumpers seem a lot more susceptible to showing the results of even a minor scrape. Add that up over a couple of years of parking in the city and your car is going to look like hell. I guess the only solution is one of those goofball mats like The Bumper Beetle or The Bumper Baboon. -
Just this Tuesday, the root of all parking problems and busted bumpers happened right on my block.
One car parked with too much space behind the car in front of it. The next car in line took even more space. And then the next dude did the same thing. So what was left behind the third car was not even enough room for a Mini Cooper. That spot is still empty. So that's three days where a spot has been wasted because people are selfish assholes. I even took pictures while the owners sat inside and watched me. I thought of trying to correct them, but who knows how that may go. -
What was the line Eddie Murphy had in one of his movies?
Every scratch on this car is a scratch on your ass.
Thats how I feel. How can someone possibly believe "bumpers are meant for bumping"
Try living by that motto when taking your driving test and watch yourself fail because you cant park. You FAIL because you hit another car and cannot park properly, yet some of you believe it;s ok to use the brail method of parking.
I use the bumper bully to help protect myself whenever possible....funny thing is, it just got ripped right off of my car by some ass. I didnt even know it could be ripped out when the trunk is closed. Luckily no damage was done to it.
People out there are just jealous (consciously or subconsciously) that other people have better/nicer cars and just dont give a shit. With a runway of a space, they will park right up your ass or back up enough until they hit.
Bumpers are meant for bumping?
Since when did they become a parking aid for the mentally deficient? -

      I think you're probably onto something there.
Edited to add more lightbulbs to greater stress the revelatory nature of the jealousy theory. -

I don't.
At least not in all cases. Or even many.
Sometimes spots are just tight and it takes a little bump and grind.
Hopefully more bump and less grind.
I've seen fire and I've seen rain.
Er, sorry, wrong thread.
I've seen nice cars bump crappy cars. I've seen crappy cars bump nice cars. I've bumped a nice car while driving a crappy car. And I've bumped a crappy car while driving a nice car. It happens.
"I got my finger on the trigger,
so niggaz wonder why?
But livin' in the city it's do-or-die." -

Point to whatever you want,
the only thing that actually needs to occur
is some people need to make the basic attempt to
not be a complete asshole..
i kissed you bumper ... i AM sorry,
you smack the snot outta my car 5 times while i am sitting in it,
and respond with "bumpers are made for bumping"
and you will get an earful at the bare minimum.
again "you" refers to the nebulous group, not anyone in particular. -

I always respect others who are parked near me. Obviously I do not want to hit them with MY car and I want to make sure they have enough room to get out too. But thats more of a selfish awareness on my side anyway since I know that if I trap them in, I will be getting bumped so they can get out.
If it's a tight spot, i pass it up. -

No shit, I agree. There is a big difference between a small accidental bump and five knocks big enough to move ya.

and another thing
someone who doesnt live in the hood
and who also doesnt drive
states "bumpers are made for bumping"
seems to me like someone is only interested in getting a reaction.
there is a word for this, :?: but i cant seem to remember it right now. -
Instigator.
