  • Hi Arnold,

Welcome!!!! Yes my sister is lori angelo. I will tell her u r on. I know your family well. Bring us some of your memories of the old neighborhood. love terry angelo
  • Francesca,

I agree with you about Lidia's son Joe. I saw him "helping" her during one show. She instructed him to measure out something like raisins and pine nuts for a recipe. He measured and dumped the ingredients into the pan immediately. You could tell Lidia was steamed and said something like, "Well, Joe, I might have waited until the meat was cooked before adding the pine nuts and raisins." Joe just smirked and was like "whatever." I mentioned to my husband who was watching the show with me that Joe was a smug guy who would be doing who knows what had his mother not given him a fake job as the "wine expert." My husband disagreed, saying that Lidia is a control freak.

One night my husband and I went to Joe's restaurant "Becco" in the Village and there, before our very eyes, stood Joe. After dinner I went up to him and asked, in a kidding way, why he isn't nicer to his mother. My husband, on the other hand, said, "I bet your mother breaks your chops all the time." Joe broke out into a big smile, high-fived my husband, and said no one would believe what a bossy, "my way or the highway" type of person Lidia is. Joe added that people who watch the show now had proof of how demanding Lidia is. He seemed to be amused by our comments and really liked my husband's observation.

Since then, I do notice more and more, that Lidia has to strain to control her domineering nature. Her daughter is postively terrified of her, it seems, and always asks first if she is doing something right so as to avoid the wrath of Lidia. But neither kid can complain because I am sure Lidia shares her significant income with them.
  • Terry - I don't know how others do it - I just copy the item and paste wherever. I will try it here to see how your comment looks pasted.

  • Arnold,

  • Yeah I found it and responded to her...thanks... I am a long way from Park Slope at this point, about 700 miles away in fact. Watching all the talk go back and forth I feel like I am back home. What is the You tube section people are chatting about?
  • CAROL DL THAT WAS SOOO FUNNY. MY HUSBAND IS GOOD WITH BREAKFAST. AS FAR AS DINNER, HE HELPS BUT I MUST BE THERE WITH HIM FOR THE INGREDIENTS, ETC. OH WELL. HE'S A GREAT GUY ANYWAY.
  • HI CUZ TERRY. I WILL PRAY FOR MARIE. I'M SURE WITH HER POSITIVE THINKING AND OUR PRAYERS AND THE HELP OF GOD, SHE WILL BE JUST FINE. [-o<
  • MARILYN

Interesting observations of Lydia and Joe. And who knows what really goes on behind closed doors... But you're right about her kids not complaining; they are set for life.

While I'm sure there is a very controlling side to Lydia, your comments
reinforce for me that Joe is an a...hole. Who would bad-mouth his mom to strangers.. especially given she's a public figure.

Becco's is good - great for pre-theater dinner. Special 3-pasta meal.
Was there very long ago. See you all like to eat good food too.

The best hint from Lydia was on how to freeze basil. Put it in a baggy
with water and freeze fresh. Stays green - just plop frozen in your gravy.
Of course, this is only in the winter when you can't get fresh basil from
the garden. (My husband is also a gardener.) Now you can understand why I remarried - a man who cooks, gardens, makes home made wine.
(And I also got free dental before he retired.)

Good Night All - have a flight in the am to visit my "future".....
  • WELL, GOOD NIGHT ALL. WORK TOMORROW.
  • Arnold,
If u go back to page 60 Millie put a u tube on of a baby laughing it is hysterical. I saw it before. There is another one under Judy B. and it is u tube of the old street games. That was very good. The street game video is a couple of pages back, u will see it under judy and it is in BLUE.
Which La Greca is your Mom?? terry angelo
I just spoke to Lori she remembers u, she was and still is good friends with your cousin Gina.
  • CAROL -

I am so lucky re Frank's cooking. He is an excellent cook also. He makes
extra food and I freeze little containers and and bring them to my sister when I go to Brooklyn. She makes special requests too. Thank God he doesn't bake, other than chocolate chip cookies once in a while. What's not fair is that he has been 135 lbs his entire adult life. That's worthy of repeating 'that's not fair.'

The only food that is hands-off to him - and I will make till the day I die - is my gravy. When he needs meatballs for a recipe, I will make them. Sorry I have to go... could talk food forever. Catch up with you
    along the way, God willing...

Good Night again and Sweet Dreams to ALL...

  • Francesca--

Actually Joe's restaurant was "Babbo," not "Becco." And, yes, he's an arrogant guy.
  • Arnold if you were a kid or grown up big Nick was big
  • Francesca and Marilyn I agree with both of you girls I'd like to hit him with his own wine bottle
  • Dear Marie,

I have been an oncology nurse for many years. I may not know you but YOU ARE A SURVIVOR!!! Good luck and God bless tomorrow. FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!

positive1 wrote: Pardon the interuption. I put up my first post last night but who knows where I posted it at this point.

My name is Arnold DeSena and I used to live on 21st between 6th and 7th. My mother is Jeanette DeSena. My Aunt Rosie and Uncle Louie (Marsella) lived on 6th ave. across from the lab. My cousins are Ralph, Joe and Lisa Marsella. I have more cousins that lived on 6th between 20th and 19th--Gina and Joey Puglisi with my Aunt Marie ( Bingo Happy). Just trying to touch base with anyone who might know me or the rest of us. I know Ralph has been posting here.

Debbie: was your Dad Nick? I remember him as a large guy...maybe he looked big because I was a kid...he had a store in my Aunt Rosie's building on 6th???

Terry: do you have a sister named Lori??? I think I went to St. John's with her.

If I am wrong with all this I am sorry to have interupted...

Hey Arnold, welcome back to the neighborhood! Can you believe our family's shared the same home? Mine and my mom's childhood home... We're practically related! It's just mind boggling! Speaking of Pasta Padano, I think I'll make some myself! ..and thanks for giving me the names of your grandparents who were so very thoughtful of my grandmother and mom when they cooked! I'm sure my mom will remember now. BTW - the bar on 36th and 4th? Was that your uncles bar?

  • Festina,
I saw that video awhile ago. It was good to see again. It brought back so many memories of our Italian heritage. The way we grew up. I amazes me how much things have changed. You know I never ate a store bought ravoli as kid my Mom made them all the time. Too bad we did not get the recipe. The video is so true how life has changed. My family still gets together for holidays but not like when my grandma and mom were alive. Everyone is all over the place, so different now. Thanks for the memories Love Terry
  • OK FESTINA YOU ARE KILLING ME...HOW DID U GET YOUR PHOTO UP THERE.

ur welcomed girl...glad to take you down memory lane. At least we can say we experienced it and it made us who we are. It's not a bad thing either to REMIND the kids/grandkids of that too. I know someday they will honor it as much as we do....maybe when they're around 50ish like us!
