Should Bloomberg be allowed to run a 3rd term?

I think if Mike Bloomberg wants to change the law of term limits for Mayors of NYC, he should only be allowed to change it for future Mayors and not himself... Because Bloomberg became Mayor with such clear limitations of his terms, it would be an abuse of the power of authority if he was able to change it for his own personal benefit.

Term limits are in place for a reason. The political machine doesn't need to be started up again to keep a Mayor in place for so long. Thank goodness in the end, it's still up to us for voting.

yeah, i disagree with term limits in general, but even so, they're the law. if the mayor doesn't uphold the law, then what's he even doing there?

i particularly hate the "we'll change it just this once" bullshit. if the electorate needs to be saved from itself, then that's true all the time, not just now.

if he wants to run again, he should have a referendum. i'd even take a court opinion stating the term limit law is somehow bogus or doesn't apply here. but just "i don't like the law, so it's not the law anymore"? how is that appropriate behavior? how is that even legal?

I don't support term limits generally (unless of course it's for W). I do support the rule of law. If the law can be changed without a referendum then that's the law, like it or not (if not, lobby to change the law). In these circumstances, I think that a mayor or governor running for a third term should be required to do so as an independent (so the parties can run against him/her) and should be required to get a super majority, say 60% of the vote.

Earlier today a reporter from the NY Observer asked His Highness if he thought the rationale for his seeking a third term should be cancelled out now that the economy is improving. Bloomberg got pissed and said the rationale was that the City Council passed it. Now correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't Bloomberg's main argument for a third term the rotten economy?
