Joe Joe’s Pizza on Church Ave?

I walked by again today and asked someone passing by about it. He tells me Joe & Joe’s Pizzeria is indeed out of business, and a Pizza Hut will soon be opening in that space.... If that’s true, it’s really too bad. I always like local business better than chains, and Joe & Joe‘s made pretty good Pizza……. That avenue use to have no chains at all. Then the Rite Aid opened a few years ago. Now a Pizza Hut is going to open too.

I'm really surprised and disappointed that Joe & Joe's closed - we ordered from them a lot and also thought their pizza was very good. What a shame!
-
I know one of the two Joe’s who owned it also owned a Fruit & Vegetable store in Windsor Terrace (on 9th ave btwn Prospect ave & Windsor pl - in the space where Clemen’s Mexican Restaurant is now). He passed away a few years ago, maybe in 2003. But the Pizzeria was still running successfully for a few years afterwards. I don’t know why they closed now. But I'll miss eating Pizza there, and I won't be eating at Pizza Hut.

They didn't seem to be doing great business recently. They were also closed this winter for health violations, which can't help business. Their recent inspections all look good though, so I don't think hygiene was the issue this time

That place down the street called Korner’s Pizza is terrible. And there they charge $2.75 for one plain slice of bad Pizza!! I can’t imagine Korner getting more business than Joe & Joe‘s.

I used to live in Windsor Terrace and moved out over 20 years ago. Was this the pizzeria near the corner of MacDonald Avenue? There were 2 Italian pizzerias there but I don't recall their names. One was on Church and the other on MacDonald. The one on Church made tastier pizza ( I thought) and had more food variety.

Joe & Joe’s Pizzeria was on Church Ave between McDonald Ave & East 2nd St.
Korner Pizzeria is on the corner of Church ave & East 3rd st.
There’s another Pizzeria right on the corner of Church ave & Dahill road (right next door to Buzzarama), but I can’t remember the name.
I can’t think of any Pizzeria actually on McDonald ave very close to Church ave. -
J & J and Korner = aha! Now I recall both. J + J was the better one in the old days.
The one of MacDonald must have closed. Bear in mind, I lived there many moons ago and moved out over 20 years ago.
Pizza Hut may be OK, but it can never match the quality and taste of the good old family owned pizzerias in Brooklyn. -
hmmm, anyone want to open a pizzeria with me?

Hello, this is my first post. I normally read this board but do not post, but today when I saw that Pizza the Hutt is opening on Church, I was aghast, and had to register and reply. So, hi.
Joe & Joe's had excellent pizza. It was priced right, tasty, and they were pretty nice. Three things that Korner is completely lacking (although they DO have fountain soda, albeit also overpriced). Pizza Hut is gross and I definitely won't be eating there. (Plus there's one over on Coney, how many do we really need?).
I would like to call everyone's attention to a really great pizzeria that I have been eating at lately up on Caton, a block or so past Ocean Pkwy - near Shenanigan's -- A&L Pizzeria. I just recently found this place (when I couldn't get Joe & Joe's!) and apparently they are under new management. I don't know what the old management is like, so I can't comment on any sense of improvement. But their slices are $2 (wow!) and totally good. The square slices are delicious. And it's a nice atmosphere too -- the guy that works there is nice.
Rocky's is another great alternative. -
A posting from a family member on another blog seemed to imply they haven't found a new owner, although they are closing. So I think we can calm down the Pizza Hut rumors for now. At least it's not a Dominos!

Subject: thanks for tip
thanks peanut butter for the info re: A&L. It's a bit of a walk but I'm tempted to try it! thank you! I never tried J&J - I didn't realize it was any good. oops. -
When I was walking home from the subway this evening I saw they hung a sign. Apparently it will be a "super" 99-cent store.
-
Subject: incredible.
you're kidding! ... ARE you kidding?
Incredible. !! how many 99 cent stores can one neighborhood hold? -
lol
I laughed when I saw that today. Back to back 99$ stores. Great. -
It's true, yet ANOTHER 99 cent store. I wish I could boycott it to send a message but that would do nothing. Someone needs to get the word out to these "entrepreneurs" that we have enough of the 99 cent stores. In other news, a new nail salon opened on Church near E4th! I'm really speechless.

ive lived here for over 30 years and i think korner has always had most of the market for pizza in this area. i knew billy from joe and joes, and their pizza was great too but we are flooded with pizza, nail salons and 99cents stores. haha. im actually glad chains are opening to be honest. the fact of the matter is most commercial rents on church are 2500 a month and up and a small business owner cannot afford to keep up with it, only a big chain can. I walked from mcdonald ave to east 3rd today and saw about 6 gates down. Im not so hyper anti-establishment that i would prefer a closed down store to a chain....just my opinion...btw its not another 99 cents store, its the one that was in the beverly theatre building

In all the years I lived in God's Country, I never had any pizza that contained meat. Here in Minnesota, people do not eat pizza unless it is one of those Chicago style types that has a lot of meat on it.
Nothing matches NY pizza for taste and aroma!
Howdy, Stranger!
