  • Enabling the Private Message feature might not be a bad idea. Would anybody else use it? Does everyone understand what we are talking about?
  • Yes, we understand, it it would be fun. I think all extra functions like this make the site that much more valuable.
  • It'd but nice if users were able to block specified people from PMing them or choose not to receive PMs at all - to keep flames and trolls under control as undoubtedly there will be some abuse of that.
  • Iagree with all of daveb's comments and have for some time (don't know why I never said anything).
  • guest=me
  • dammit! both guests above are me!
  • I am definitely in!

hahaha yeah. but you should worry about getting people to figure out how to log in before moving on to... gasp... expert functionalities like private messaging! lol...
  • you, rhodamine!

We know how to log in! Phpbb keeps logging us out for no reason!
  • I've been having the "random logout" problem less-and-less lately with Firefox/1.0.4.

Automatic logout people: what browser/browser version are you using?

...nah, that was just my nice way of saying you should use mozilla/firefox. its a simple enough fix, and if youre using ie, you should be using firefox aznyway
  • Use Firefox!!! The Kool-Aid is tasty and refreshing, believe me.
  • i'm using firefox, cookies enabled, and have clicked all the "please remember me" check boxes in site [pun intended].

i still get logged out by the time i hit submit. even if i say "big money big money no whammies."
  • see??

Please don't tale this as an "expert opinion", but the problem could lie in a software firewall or possibly a router blocking referrers. At least with a software firewall, this can be remedied by adding this board's domain to a "trusted" zone. I've had problems like that before, so I thought I'd suggest, but again, I'm not really an expert. Personally, I am not experiencing logout problems and I am using the latest stable build of Firefox.
  • Could this be an issue with ZoneAlarm??

Automatic logout people: who's using ZoneAlarm?

It'll also happen with the Symantec line of Firewalls. it serves a purpose to keep your previous page browsed private from other sites but can cause problems occasionally with staying "logged in".
  • Also, likely it's not the case, but Firefox has the ability to turn sending referrers on or off. It can be tweaked by typing about:config into the address bar. You'll see a ton of stuff, look for where "referrers" are mentioned and see if the corresponfing expression is true or false. If it's false and you are not sending referrers, that too might be your problem but it is simple to change it to true.
  • I actually think the problem is unrelated to Firefox since I can only use IE at work and the problem happens here all the time. My theory is that the session is not being maintained when you navigate back to a post you are in the process of replying to. E.g.,

    I read a post
    I want to reply
In the process of replying I click back to go to the post again to refresh my memory
I hit forward to go back to my reply
The cached page shows me as logged in, but actually I'm not anymore
When I post, it shows up as Guest.

    Just a theory.

I wasn't suggesting it was related to Firefox, only to referrals being blocked which can occur in any browser, dependant on firewall rules, router configs and very rarely Firefox itself. (it comes with referrals set to true, so it usually takes a manual tweak in the first place, thereby being less likely). A session not being maintened would point IMO to your office sys admin's firewall policies be he aware of it or not.
  • someone else said it was related to Firefox, i wasn't responding to you directly. it happens at home too, so I don't believe it's my office firewall. i don't use a firewall at home.
  • Got this off the PHPBB support FAQ:

"# I (or my users) cannot stay logged in to the forum!

If you (or your users) are, after attempting a login, being returned to the index (or other page) without appearing to be logged in the most likely problem is incorrect cookie settings. phpBB 2 uses cookies to store a session id and a small amount of user data. For this data to be stored correctly the cookie domain, path and secure settings must be correct. You can check this in Admin->General Configuration->Cookie settings. Typically the cookie domain can be left blank and the cookie path set to / (a single forward slash). Do not set the cookie as being secure unless your board is running over a secure sockets layer connection, ie. https://

If you still have problems try setting the cookie domain to your full domain name, eg. www.mysystem.tld, www.something.mydomain.tld. You must ensure the domain name contains at least two dots or browsers will be unlikely to recognise the cookie, eg. .mydomain.com, mydomain.com. Do not add http:// or anything else to the domain name!"

    Hope that helps.
  • Thanks for looking into that, daveb. I use another phpBB board and no one there has problems, so I've been mystified as to why people here are. Maybe that's it.

That's exactly what's been happening to me and I use the Mac 1.0.4 version of Firefox. I had the cookies set to accept from the originating site only and to be maintained until Firefox is closed. I just changed my preferences to give Dailyheights.com unrestricted cookie-setting privileges, so we'll see if that fixes things.
  • Apparently not. Guest (above) = me.
