Cats cages/carriers Left on 6th Avenue

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I received an email regarding this from my cat sitter this morning.

On 6 ave between 23st and 24st it looks like someone or a rescue group let cats out. there are a bunch of cages and carriers with food in them.
She would really like to know who did this.

She hopes nobody let cats out over there. if the cats go in the cemetery they will not survive.

  • Is it possible that someone is trying to catch stray cats and that is why the carriers are out there with food inside them?
  • Why wouldn't they survive?

I'm hopeful that LongTimeSloper's theory is correct.

No, you'd need a trap to catch strays. The strays are not going to enter a carrier, eat the food, then curl up for a nap while the trapper comes back to close the door. Something really nefarious is going on here. Peanuts, I think that your catsitter should call 311, the ASPCA or the Center for Animal Care and Control. I'm almost certain that abandoning a cat is against the law, although it's probably a misdemeanor.
  • I don't think it's a rescue organization because they would use traps - not just cages and carriers. I don't want to make any calls, but I will send this info to my cat sitter - she may have gotten more information in the meatime.

  • Just to be clear, I don't want to make any calls because I didn't see it
  • FYI - Officials were alerted and handled the situation - both the people involved and the animals were taken care of.

Notwithstanding siminan_sam's later post about the perp being arrested, I think you're right not to make calls. Your catsitter should make the calls because she's the one who saw something. Law enforcement should not act on hearsay. That's why I suggested your catsitter make the calls.
  • WHAT? So what happened? Simian, do you have any other details on why, who?
  • Deleted at the request of my informant. Sorry!

Huh? Where does this info come from? How did the round up the cats?
  • Thanks all...I'll pass the message on to her.
Some kind of "rescuer" that was....glad he was arrested

And Bohuma...I understood what you meant about my catsitter making the call - I just didn't want anyone to think I didn't care and that's why I didn't call.

Ah, sorry, didn't see this before I made my post. How sad, i hope the cats find homes!
  • What an asshole, I hope they got all the cats he let loose.
  • Update: my catsitter said that some rescue groups (obviously ones with a heart) are trying to get most of the cats out of Animal Care & Control.

I hope the asshole gets punished for this and not just a slap on the wrist!
  • Sadly - animal cruelty laws almost always result in mere wrist-slapping and slight wallet-lightening. It sucks.
  • Subject: cat cages and carries in park slope

It does not look like anyone was trying to trap the cats on 6ave between 23rd & 24th street.

It looks like someone let all the cats out if the cages and carries. If the cats go into the cemetery they will not survive because of the dogs that that run loose in the cemetery.

I just hope and pry the furbabies will be ok.

  • There are dogs that run loose in the cemetery? I have never seen that and I go to that cemetery once a month. where are they running loose?
  • Never seen a dog running loose in the cemetary, but I have seen raccoons.
  • Please see the link below regarding emergency adoption this weekend because of the rescue of 64 cats. If you know anyone thinking of getting a cat, now would be a great time
