yet another yay music thread - post your faves — Brooklynian

yet another yay music thread - post your faves

so, since I'm suffering from ipod lack (soon to be fixed) and further issues with ubuntu I am, of course, listening to music on youtube as I destroy my entire apartment ... not cleaning it, but searching for my coil ape of naples CD. this fit of insanity, brought on by too much television and international move stress is also making me super nostalgic for some of the hilarious CDs I am coming aross in this fruitless though fascinating search. some gems I've uncovered are ...

when I was in turkey, at a bellydancing show put on solely for my father's benefit, I demanded a copy of the CD and also had a good laugh because this song is one of the first tracks on the mix - as if I haven't heard this song in EVERY club all over latin america:

I also asked the bellydancer for the names of her fave artists names so I could buy some CDs and this dude, tarkan, came up. aside from being seriously fucking HOT (his posters were plastered everywhere - some new album release), is also a great singer. one of my fave tracks is hup:

total classic, especially if you are a hippie or your parents were and had ANY connection to latin america. shit, you probably know the words, too:

clearly, I was raised by some hippies. I couldn't decide between a few songs but I love these and they're all _still_ absurdly relevant (and were written by all sorts of random people a zillion years ago):

this one is has embedding disabled but is the original version and, frankly, it's the absolute best version, especially since it was recorded live (shit, I remember going to madison with my mom to buy the cassette at the feminist bookstore - I think I wore the stupid thing out) so here you go:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESSbVYHHS0o

a very interesting (and shorter version) is a video from the first time they tried singing it together, which is fascinating if you're a dork, like me:

funniest yet also funnest (probably) concert I've ever been to. it was also free - had to dress extreme slutty goth and dance my ass off but worth the trouble:

okay, last one. best concert I've been to lately (and last time I'll ever attempt to get into a pit, especially dressed up to go to a batali restaurant in vegas):

  • Current obsessions:

Antony and the Johnsons- shake the devil

    The Format- apeman:

    Cat Power- New York

  • god, I fucking love cat power. that was a great live show. rivals dead can dance and bikini kill for best stage presence ever. then again, performing with your back to the audience is badass. (wrt to DCD, quietest concert ever in terms of audience, and bikini kill, well, all chick pit? sounds like a great porno)
  • oh, and DCD had this afro-latin drum group with them who were hot, plus I heart lisa whatsit, and bikini kill? as if there's a question - kathleen hanna is impossible to ignore. teh pretteh.
  • ah cripes, FD late, I post 15 million times.

the antony song freaked me out (majorly - couldn't finish it) only because I was recently, for some horrible reason that involves straight men and queers hanging out together, introduced to a phrase:

    "fisting the dog"

which makes a song about a dog almost unbearable, especially when you factor in an extremely late night involving said company (what can I say? birthday toasts are fun) and mentions of the phrase by many parties, including myself, well, icky. the phrase - already icky enough. song that makes me think of it and wonder how folks visualized it (which has come up multiple times) makes me feel more icky. so. I'm sharing the love. enjoy.

in the spirit of the thread (I did start it), a few more bits of worth that I've found just searching my memory of memorable shows. I saw these chicks twice, and both times I was alone and kinda laughed at the audience full of hipsters and guys who didn't get that it's all a fucking joke. the payoff, if you will, was that at the first show, louie austen opened. so lots of dancing and fun and watching pretty lights. these lyrics, btw, are freaking hysterical:

I'm kinda think paul anka borrowed this idea from louie austen. but hey, bigger payoff for a bigger name, though no clue how louie is doing in austria or wherever he's from. the electronic music background for big band stuff works, though. most of the crowd, it seemed, had no clue what was coming and I, for one, was pleasantly (and dancily) surprised. then again, he was opening for an all female, multinational, experimental electronica band who, well, play plastic instruments or break up light beams to make funny sounds. shoulda known he'd be ok:

finally, last amusing show. too bad the sound quality on her freaking CDs sucks. I guess that's what happens when you're coked out of your head while making sure your CD sounds ok. still, I like the not-band concept and wish she'd gotten further (and played a freaking better venue than the back room at an old mayo factory in fricking billyburg):

  • My fave Cat Power tracks:

I liked that Antony & the Johnsons track- haven't heard that before.

  • Good ol' Latterman from LI. Wish they were still around, their shows had to much energy and passion.
  • last night, in song/video form (really, this morning but whatever):

  • Just caught this new video:

    Peter Fox: Alles Neu
    <
  • Boards of Canada: Dayvan Cowboy

  • Did anyone hear that ad on tv now with Cat Power covering Bowie's "Space Oddity"? I wish they'd release that as a full track.

    On a totally different note..

  • Another interesting song I just heard:

  • Joanna Newsom, nice. I haven't thrown that record on in a while.

here's what's been spinning heavy on all formats for me. some of my favorite singers from punk bands gettin together to do a folk tour.

  • wow. carny. fab song. joanna newsom rules.
  • oof. feminists in da house! word!

  • My current favs :

Secondhand Serenade - Fall For You

Akon - Right Now (Na Na Na)

    Chris Brown - Forever

  • em! wtf? you're so sappy! then again, I'm reading twilight which is so lovey dovey I'm kinda making myself sick.

people! I require more depressing music. kthxbai.

oh, and listen to the faint radio station on rhapsody. it rules.
  • Hah, check out Rihanna's newest "collaboration":

T.I. feat Rihanna - "Live your life"

    L M A O

(a.k.a Gary Brolsma feat. Naughty By Nature, ftw)
  • jeffrey. why am I listening to crappy music I ... like? I'm pretty sure I danced to this song in a club in quito. must stop clubbing in s. america.

  • It's December 1st! Time for me to roll out fav Christmas songs. :)

    Two of my favs:

Stevie Wonder - That's what Christmas means to me

  • Em26 wrote: Collage - Last Christmas
(This one is the freestyle version. It has a faster beat and to me it's way better than the original.)
And here I was thinking you might actually post this one:

    :lol::lol::lol::lol:
  • I'm on the fence...maybe you guys can help.

Yeasayer is playing this weekend at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Should I go? Has anyone seen them live?
  • You Tube seems like a ridiculous way to listen to music.
    Try Muxtape:

    http://muxtape.com/

But since we are on videos....

  • The new Busta video is sick too. Nice to see a low budget rap video and no chains and rims and shit...plus the girl partying with Cheerios kills me everytime.

  • Ooops. Muxtape seems to be down... :(
