Emergency Response Training?
I was waiting by an elevator and a women collapsed beside me. There were about 30 people waiting for the elevator, and everyone tried to help in any way they could, called 9-11, held her head, etc. Anyhow, I’m frustrated as I just never know what to do in these types of emergency situations.
My question is this: does anyone know of any sort of emergency response training course? Essentially, a class to train me on what to do before the EMT’s arrive. I’m sick of not knowing what to do.

look on the websites for red cross and the american heart association. They have classes on CPR/First Aid

I'm thinking beyond CPR/First Aid. I've had those trainings, and at least the trainings I've received, they only help if someone is not breathing.

The Bed-Stuy Volunteer Ambulance Corps offers first responder training.

St John Ambulance and the American Red Cross run first aid courses. In this and many other situations you really need to know how to preserve an airway and how to provide CPR IF required (note not everyone needs CPR).

There is an amazing 11 week certified training held through OEM called CERT-Community Emergency Response Team. You go through a series of training courses for everything from terrorist attacks to subway fires, crane collapses, etc. It is led by our fireman and police and emt...its a great great course that leads to you volunteering. Either check out you community board or go on line for CERT or OEM. I think you'll be really happy you did! -

I have felt like this before, helpless to help someone in need. I asked my school to offer CPR/AED training so that some of us are trained in the case of an emergency. Maybe your boss would sponsor such a workshop for the office or place of employment. This type of training really needs to be practiced, all day, with fake bodies, with the proper instructor, to have any idea of what to do.

I'm certified in first aid/cpr, thank god I've never had to use it. But it's comforting to know I could help. You should talk to your boss about having a training at work.

CPR is only good to know for your family and close friends. Are you really going to put your mouth on a total stranger's mouth? Call 911 and comfort the person the best you can, there is not much more you can do. Or you can just start taking pictures like someone on this board did for an accident. In response to someone saying to take the OEM community emergency response course for things like terrorist attacks, subway fires, crane collapses, etc. Don't waste your time. Your job is to run and get the hell out of there in those situations. The only people who should be going INTO an area or situation like that are those who have the proper safety equipment to help people.

Im a sloper:
Your post is very disturbing. Regular, everyday people trained in CPR and AED can be the difference between life and death for a person who is not breathing. Many establishments such as schools, malls, universities, airports, etc. have AED units that I have been trained to use in case of an emergency.
You are just 100% percent wrong to suggest "there is not much more you can do." Perhaps Im a sloper, there is not much more YOU can do, but I can breathe air into someone's lungs and pump their heart and work an AED unit until the EMTs get there. And those ten minutes is the difference between life and death. And I learned those skills in a one day, five hour workshop.
Many people would agree with you that they do not want to breathe air into a stranger's mouth. However, I would hope that I would take that risk rather then let someone die or suffer brain damage. Additionally, CPR is used only until an AED unit can arrive. In an airport or mall, an AED unit is usually only a minute or two away and can end up on the scene very quickly.
And at the very least, if you are trained, you can pump the heart while another person breathes air into the victim or you can pump the heart and not breathe air into the victim. It is my personal opinion that letting a person die is not an option for me if I can help in some way.
Your lack of humanity on this issue is startling. -

Not necessary. By law in new york, every public place--bodegas, restaurants, bars, whatever--must have a readily available cpr kit. The kit contains resuscitation masks and disposable gloves for those who are concerned about a stranger's fluids.
Moreover, if you take a cpr class you will learn that, contrary to what you see on TV, it's not so much the mouth-to-mouth part of the cpr that's important. It's really the chest compressions that can keep a person's heart beating until the EMTs arrive. Performing that alone can mean the difference between life and death. -
