I hear they make a great double espresso.

Tony Atterbury of Slope Heights got me my first apartment in 1997. He is honest and was able to find something for me eventhough I had subpar credit at the time.

I rented an apartment through a broker that works there... Marjorie Thompson I believe was the name. Nice lady, except that she set up me with a place without telling me that it had been robbed 4 times in the past year. The day after I moved in, my neighbor told me the situation. Understandably, I was pissed. I got even more pissed when just 2 months after moving in, I became robbery victim #5. Be real careful with these people. My advice, talk to them, see the place and then go alone and talk to the neighbors.
Thanks. -
Subject: Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for the tips. I'm working with Akira Wada, and I'm inclined to trust him (as much as you would ever trust any broker). I think the apt. is in a good location, but obviously you need to take precaustions regardless. I admit to being rather spooked by these stories of muggings, break-ins and police indiference, espcially since I am a small, single female. -
Speaking of all this - does anyone have any basic tips for burglar proofing your apt.? We only have one door lock (no deadbolt) and our window that gives onto the fire escape locks quite well but does not have a gate/iron bar contraption (is the landlord obliged to install one - how much would it cost to hire someone to do this?). Anyone have any other ideas?

You're damn right I do!
I had similar problems and my one ungated window in my bedroom was the culprit. The robbers came from the roof and used the fire escape to lean out and get at the window. Get a gate on that thing ASAP. If cost is an issue, talk to your super or landlord, they can probably dig up a used one for you that's likely just as sturdy but mych cheaper. At least, that's what i did. Also, get a deadbolt on that door, it's worth it. Last, get some insurance.. I was on allstate and to insure my apartment adequately ran me about $200 a year. Cheap. -
I got totally blown off by Majorie Thompson last year while looking for a new storefront on Washington, she was rude on the phone when I called for a follow-up and wouldn't even return my calls. Why? Have no idea. She has an office up there by Eastern Parkway, a few blocks in. Will never go back to her, not even for the time of day.
Talking to the neighbors is EXCELLENT, but not always possible. I found out lots that way on a place I ended not taking just last week. -
Renters insurance is a GREAT idea. People think it is a lot of money but in the end, its only a few dollars a month and at least you have piece of mind.
I have an agent who is a genius. He is located in the Bronx but we do everything on the phone. You can get a policy in 24 hours. He did my car, house and life insurance. I really trust him. I have been using him since college (10 years, eks).
PM me if you want his info! YEAH PM!!!! -

I do belive the landlord is obliged only if you are on the first floor, not sure about higher up. Call 311, and let us know. Get a lock for your door, they arent that hard to install.
I have come to deduce that crackheads are terrified of two things, water and dogs, I cant have a moat but my dog is the best deterrent ever. -
Duane Reade has a window/door alarm set for pretty cheap, and although it won't keep out the burglars, it might deter them and make you feel safer when you're at home. My old place on 4th Ave b/t Dean & Bergen was broken into and I would have loved to have one of those on top of the new deadbolt I had installed by a locksmith for around $60.

Unless you really can't afford the $200 or so per year, it's incredibly foolish to live here and not have insurance. Plus, if you have an alarm, or window bars, or j-bar, etc, or (gasp!) a doorman, you can generally get some kind of discount for these theft-deterrents.
This ain't Kansas! (or has this become a banned phrase yet?) -

That's correct. I live on a 4th floor and after I got robbed, I looked into it. However, I mentioned before if you're looking for something cheap, talk to your super or landlord and see if they can get you a used one. You'll have to pay, but it was a $200 difference in price for me and just as strong as a new one.
