Damn roaches — Brooklynian

Damn roaches

I'm dealing with major roach issues in my apartment. They are coming from all angles. My landlord sends an exterminator to the building once a month, but only during the weekdays while I'm at work. So, the exterminator is not going to help too much. Does anyone have any home remedies for roaches? I've tried several sprays but they only serve as a sort of temporary reprieve from the problem. Any innovative techniques out there? Thanks in advance.

  • Boric Acid. Go to the closest hardware store (there are 2 on Nostrand and one on Franklin) and get a bag or can of the stuff. Put it down along your baseboards and in any cracks, crevices or holes you can find. Other than that its the usual, keep everything in sealed containers and try not to leave any water sources around.
  • One remedy we've found helpful is to combine sugar with baking soda, 1:1 ratio, and put mixture in a small shallow reservoir. Next to the mixture, provide some water. The idea is that the sugar attracts the roach, roach eats baking soda, drinks water and its stomach explodes from the gas. Sounds like something the coyote tried on the road runner, I know, but we've noticed a huge difference.
  • Wow! They really need to test that on Mythbusters. I need to see roach stomachs exploding in slow motion.
  • Subject: Additionally

In addition to using the methods stated above, a key solution is to also try and locate and minimize all points of entry. Ultimately, you will never be able to kill every roach that lives in your building and surrounding buildings, so the best thing is to prevent them from getting in to your apartment.

I recommend getting some simple silicone caulk (any caulk will do) and steel wool. When you find a crevice on your baseboard, floorboards, walls, ceiling, around pipes underneath your sink, anything, if it even remotely looks like a something a roach could get through, seal it off.

Stuff steel wool into it and then seal it up with the caulk. I tried boric acid and other poisons, but it wasn't until I did this that I have been roach free for a year now.

    Good luck.
  • we got this little plastic grey-and-black traps that apparently have poisoned water in them... i think at target? made a gigantic difference in the roach world.
