union market

Is it me, or is the entire staff off? Was looking at overpriced something or another today, guy stocking the shelves a row over drops a jar of sauce, which breaks, and he proceeds to throw a box relatively violently, narrowly missing me. He saw me, and said nothing.

a few weeks ago, I bought mussels, and the counter guy told me he didn't feel like going downstairs to get another bag, so he gave me all the loose ones with about a 1/2 pound extra to compensate for any spoilage. (worked out for me, b/c they were all fine.)

I just never get the warm fuzzies in there.

  • which one are you referring? union street or 7th avenue?

i've always found the staff at union street to be great.

lmaoo, I love it, the facade is beginning to crack.
  • if you're talking about the new one in south slope, yeah, it's weird. i was so excited about its arrival, but basically all it's done is introduced me to the hidden charms of the met between 16th and the expressway, la dolce vita on the corner of 14th and 7th, and those 2 korean markets on 7th and like 11th-ish/12th-ish, one of which has an excellent selection of fresh bread.
  • There was some discussion of the staff's customer service skills (or absence of those skills) on this thread when they first opened.

I also like the deli on the corner of 7th and 11th. If they don't have something you want, you can talk to the older guy with glasses and he will try to get it for you.
  • yup, I'm referring to the south slope one.

And I love the deli on the corner of 7th and 10th/11thish...they stock amy's bread, have a great selection, and are lovely.
  • Yes, the staff does seem a little off, as if all the workers have hangovers. A guy mopping the floor at Union Market once ran over my foot with dirty water. He didn't say anything, but looked frightened. Weird stores, both locations.

Eating from Union Market's deli sections costs more than eating out at many local restaurants. At many restaurants on 7th and 5th avenues, I am full after eating around $25 worth of food, but I must eat $35 worth of Union Market food to be full.

    If you're comparing two evils:

Some grocery store shelf items at Union Market cost the same as they do at Key Food on 7th Avenue, but the lines are shorter at both Union Markets, so you can escape either Union Market faster with fresher vegetables than you would get at Key Food on 7th Avenue.
  • i love it when they're too busy talking on their cell phones to look me in the eye. guess service doesn't matter if people are loving their food--but it ain't for me.
  • Subject: Really?

I don't interact with the staff there all that much, but I've always found the women who work at checkout to be very nice. Honestly, the only people who get under my skin there are some of the customers.
  • Funny, I was just at the one on 7th Avenue near 13th Street and the woman at the deli counter was too busy chatting with her co worker to pay attention to what I wanted (a half pound of chicken fingers) and she ended up giving me a whole pound, she barely looked at me while handing the food over either. i think the people working at the 6th Avenue location are nicer and usually go to that one.
  • We were at Union Market, near 13 st, late one evening and their deli case was stocked with food, every dish filled, even a large stack of quesadilla's. I was wondering if that was from the morning, refilled sometime during the day or what and will it go out the next day.
