Baby Shower in the Slope - Kinda got screwed by restaurant

A local restaurant which will remain nameless, cause I don't want this to turn into badmouthing them - gave me a quote on holding a baby shower brunch on a Saturday in January. I thought I had booked this back in September, but when they didnt call me as promised to iron out the details, I went in again a couple days ago to follow up. A manager called me back promptly, told me the person who gave me a price originally had no business giving me a quote, and that the price was actually more than DOUBLE what I had been quoted.

So now I am back to the drawing board. After working in the restaurant industry for years, I know that Saturdays are slower than Sundays for brunch, and January is slow season, but the places I am going are all quoting me prices of $30 - $40 per head, for essentially pancakes and eggs.

Anyone have any good ideas? We essentially want either a private room/alcove/area designated for us, for 3 or 4 hours, and really don't want to spend much more than $22 or so per head. Its not really a big drinking crowd either. Any suggestions would be welcome.

  • Tavern on Dean which is in Prospect Heights has a very nice back room and has a nice atmosphere. Their fixed priced brunch is only $14-15 a person. But they do get a big brunch crowd so I would definitely give them a call sooner rather than later. Good luck
  • Ok, so, this might sound a little crazy, but... hear me out anyway.

My husband and I were walking on 7th Ave one Saturday, and saw a sign in the Beer Table place, that they serve brunch. Now, these guys are not your usual watering hole, but connoisseurs, who have just recently opened their very first business. The place was empty, and sparkling clean. We went in, just to check the brunch out, and actually stayed and loved it. The place was, as I mentioned, all to ourselves, and the food was fantastic (belgian waffles with 3 types of organic pears and sausage.

Sooo, here's the low-down, I am a preggo, and my hubby doesn't drink. :) But we chatted with the owners on a few occasions, and know that they were looking to open a catering business. They got a fantastic chef, and make brunches in that place just for fun, as an experiment. Sooo, where was I? Right, give them a call, may be they will close the place for you (it's tiny) for a good price.

  • hey hamilton,

how do you feel about magnolia?

    ;)
  • my cleaning lady or the restaurant?
  • sorry about the duplication , but i have a stuttering problem
  • In regards to Tavern on Dean. A friend of mine had her Morning after Wedding Brunch there. We had about 40 people in the back room. Tavern said that if they wanted a fixed menu it would be cheaper than their fixed price brunch. Which is about $14.95 and included(s) one mimosa/Champagne/half pint of beer. My friend wanted people to be able to order anything they wanted so I don't know how much cheaper.

The "Garden" room can accommodate up to 60 I think, and it is completely inclosed so cold shouldn't be a problem. and there is a door that cuts it off to the rest of the restaurant so kids can run around all they want and won't disturb the rest of the restaurant.
  • I think $30.00 a head with drinks is fair. If NOBODY is drinking--maybe $20.00; but large groups are large headaches.

  • Have you approached any places that don't have liquor licenses? I know there are a couple BYOB places on Seventh and Fifth, and if you brought your own wine that might lower the price quite a bit. Sorry I don't have specifics but have passed a few in my vast travels on foot.
  • I have a bar/restaurant on the 5th ave betwen 17th and 18th st, Ellis. If you haven't found a place yet, I'd love to put something together for you, and completely accomodate your budget. I'm really sorry that happened to you. Baby showers and planning are stressful enough. (I was there not too long ago myself.)

  • Magnolia did a great job on a party I had there a few years but if you are counting tax & grats in that $22/pp, I can't imagine you would be able to find anyplace to host a party for that price.
  • thanks so much to all who replied! I truly appreciate the non-snarky responses.

I got a great quote from Elementi, which has a private party room, so it looks like we will have it there.
  • my brother and his wife had their morning after wedding this at chez lola on myrtle in fort greene. yummy yummy yummy. and they had mini-hamburgers.
  • I checked out Magnolia for a baby shower and it will definitely run you more than 22 pp.

Have you thought of lookingout of the area? Bay Ridge perhaps?
