where to buy swimwear this time of year
I've joined the YMCA (yay!) and want to try out the pool but am lacking swimwear. What I have is either in tatters or better for sunning or wearing under a dive suit than swimming. I looked for a new one this summer but the few places I looked (Gap, Old Navy, Target, among others) all had the same stuff and just a few styles that were not what I was looking for.
I'm not looking for a designer bikini, but something I can swim in. Any suggestions on stores that sell this stuff year round in Brooklyn or Manhattan? I'd rather try stuff on than deal with online ordering/returning.
I did a quick google search but there's not much info on most of the places that came up and some of them are obviously designer stuff.

Paragon Sports, maybe? Especially if you're just looking for a lap-swimming suit.

I got two great bathing suits at Century 21 back in January. $100 each, marked down to $40 each. They have a huge selection no matter what time of year. HIGHLY recommended!

The Modell's in Fulton Mall had some decently priced sporty-suits (like Speedo) last time I looked (a few months ago, but still swimsuit off-season). Don't forget your swim cap! I think all the Ys require them (at least the Dodge branch does).

LL Bean has great unfashionable ones... And they last forever! Land's end has a pretty decent selection as well. Newport News is ok but pretty inexpensive.
Good luck! -

Thanks for all the rec's. I always forget about Century 21. Do y'all think I need to go to the Manhattan one or is the Brooklyn one pretty stocked?
I agree that places like Lands End can be good for this stuff, I'm just aiming to try it on and not have to deal with returns
I think all of the Y's require swim caps. I was just wondering where you buy those--it's something I've never used before. I'm guessing places like Paragon and Modell's will have them. -
You need Paragon. They have suits, they have caps. And googles.
Year-round. Union Sq, great selection always. The small sports stores on 7th Ave also have caps and googles, don't know about suits.
I love Century 21, but I've never seen a speedo there. Where are the swim suits? -
Update: I headed to the Brooklyn Century 21 today. Crowded but not nearly as bad as the Manhattan one when I've been there.
They do not have swimsuits at that location
but I did get snow boots (exactly what I'd not been able to find anywhere else, and for $30) and was able to scratch a long down coat off my list, so not a wasted trip.
I'll try the Manhattan one later this week. -

Ummm, upstairs??? Somewhere....sorry! The section is HUGE though, can't miss it. Not ssure if they have speedos, more fashion, I guess. Being that it is HUGE, there's got to be something in the sportswear genre. And you know, since its Century 21, the merch is never the same.....

can you lady answer me this, why is century 21 so popular
?
i never understood it hehe. always crowded. -
AW: two words: cheap bras.
OQ: get a silicon swim cap. way nicer for your hair than the rubber kind. if you can figure out what size of a major brand's suits fits you, try http://www.swimoutlet.com/ -

That's why I love shopping there. -
Paragon had plenty for me to find something comfy enough for laps. They also had a few cute suits, but the prices tended to be high and the size selection low. There were actually a couple of one-pieces I liked that weren't too old-ladyish.
Just sharing for anyone wondering about this topic.
