Has anyone been? It's the new restaurant that took over the old Cocotte space. You know, the one with the horrible new sign.

  • O is that open? I might go hit it up tonight, ive been wanting to scope it out since i saw activity in there.
  • We tried going last Sunday, but we got there too late. They close for dinner on Sundays at 9. maybe we will try tomorrow night instead.
  • I was there last Saturday..food was good but very slow in getting to us - appetizers got there quickly but a very long wait for the entree. Owner is a very nice guy....our waitress wasn't the best (she was nice but she didn't notice things) - but I'm definitely giving them another try...give them the chance to get up and running
  • We have been there once. I thought the food was very good, and the timing during our visit was fine. The owners stopped by our table 4 - 5 times during our dinner which was a little much. Our waiter was very good - did not miss anything - but the place your napkin on your lap schtick was a little over the top.
Definitely worth a try, and eager to see if the owners / waiters settle down once they are up and running.
  • People who eat at a restaurant the week it opens should expect to deal with some imperfections. Its not really fair to review a place before it has a chance to work out the kinks. Glad to hear that people liked the food. What did you eat?
  • We had buffalo mozzerrella imported from Italy as an appetizer (delicious), a pasta dish with a light tomato sauce w/shrimp; and another pasta dish with mussels/broccoli rabe.
I have to say there was one waiter who noticed us right away and saw that no one gave us menus (our waitress didn't notice) and the owner was extremely attentive (but we have gotten friendly with him as we've watched him re-do the restaurant).
I am absolutely giving them another chance - they were packed Saturday night and I think their computer was giving them problems. When we go back, if things are still really slow (we were there for about 3 hours) I'll speak to the owner. I hate to see the restuarant fail after all the work they put into it.
  • I liked the buffalo mozzarella too (the caprese - I think that's the same thing) and the vegetable panino was delish. You can get all the panini on whole wheat. The waiters were definitely in your face, though, ha ha... but I won't let that bug me at this point. Overattentiveness is sort of a trend everywhere these days. Yes, I'll go back, despite that sign. By the way, I think it's "Primo Atto."
  • Well, we are definitely going tomorrow night and I am looking forward to it now.
  • We went last night and the food was really fantastic. We happened to be the last party there so we chatted with the owner for a while. He's a really nice guy who wants his place to stand out. Told us he was having trouble finding competent wait staff, his plans for his wine list, and for the restaurant.

I can't say enough good things about the food, the homemade fettuccine was delicate and perfectly cooked, the mashed potatoes that came with the ostrich were amazing and a perfect match for the ostrich's preparation. The ostrich itself was delicious and a nice healthy meat to see on the menu. The arugula salad with pine nuts and beets was huge and delicious and be sure to read the descriptions on the dessert menu.

The owner definitely likes to chat and I wouldn't be surprised to not always get great service for the first few weeks, but with very reasonable prices (most expensive entree was $28, pasta is as low as $12, and the portions are big, one of each course (appetizer, salad, pasta, entree) is a good amount of food for 2 people. We got the stuffed mozzarella appetizer, 2 salads, the fettuccine and the ostrich and were completely stuffed, I took home some of the fettuccine and a little less than half the salad. It'll be worth the bumpy road until he gets things settled down.

I think it's "Primo Atto" (first act) not "Primo Alto" (the first high). Definitely recommended, I have a feeling we'll be back within a week.
  • glad to hear good things about this place... although that sign is fuuuuggggllllly
  • Went tonight for dinner. It was a bit pricey but the food was excellent ! We will definitely be goung back.

The lobster ravioli and pasta with pancetta, onions and tomato sauce were amazing!

And the appetizer we had was large enough for 3 or 4 people , so that made me feel better about the $13 price.
  • We went there tonight too... VERY good. The buffalo mozz was awesome, as was the mushroom pappardelle and my husband's dish, the bucatini with pancetta. We also split the tiramisu -- delicious. They're a little in your face, but I suspect that will calm down after they've been open a while. REALLY good food though, and reasonably priced. Not to mention that the owner comped us each a drink, so yay.
  • How did you get comped a drink? And, what time were you there? Maybe we saw you, LOL.
  • We went tonight also. We were seated in the bar area, which is not a cozy or inviting spot - cheesy music and bad Italian TV being the main attraction. The service was a bit confused and disjointed but nothing shocking for a new place. The owner/manager(?) was apologetic and clearly trying to make a good impression despite everything. Most importantly, the food was excellent and about as fresh as you can get. We shared the Mozzarella di Bufala (not on menu) to start, damn tasty but $15? OK, I'll forgive. The mains were outstanding, the tiramisu heavenly, the vin santo perfect. One small suggestion - better table bread, like the wonderful crusty, chewy stuff they serve at Tempo. And maybe a little olive oil on the table? Otherwise, the meal itself was top-notch.

Once they smooth things out, this place should do pretty well.
  • i agree.
we went there the other week when they had no heat (and it was freezing!... not their fault of course... these things happen) and they gave us complimentary wine and incredibly delicious dessert.

we had the artichoke pesto which was wonderful and another frutta di mare dish which was also suuuuper yummy.

the 'interrupting the meal 6-7 times to do some italian shtick' wore very very thin (especially as we were absolutely unable to carry a conversation for more than 2 minutes without someone coming by and either asking how everything was or for one of the guys to come over and tell us how 'bellisssima' everything about the meal was... which was very very grating on our patience. they also pushed us to order a LOT of food and, as we are not big eaters or big spenders, showed obvious disappointment that between the two of us we 'only' ordered one appetizer and two entrees...

all these things were indeed annoying and pushy but the food really was delicious and we will go back... hopefully they'll pull back on the theatrics a bit (and i recognize it was to stand out from the rest... but trust me it gets a bit ridiculous)... i'd love to hear others opinions!
  • We had olive oil on the table and they happily gave us more when we asked. there was also heat in the resturant and it was generally comfortable. I thought there were more too many people serving our table and that got a bit confusing, but, i wouldn't say they were overly solicitious. they asked me what I wanted to dirnk and when I asked for a wine list, the man said he was my wine list, LOL, and proceeded to tell me the few wines they did have. I would have preferred to have an actual wine list.

when I did order a drink, a french martini, it took them a bit to come back and tell me the bartender did not know how to make it, when I told them how to make it, it took them a bit more to come back and tell me they didn't have the ingredients. I then ordered a vodka sour, which also took a very long time to come. When I asked the waiter where my drink was, he told me that the bartender was trying to figure out how to make the sour mix himself. This concerned me so I said, forget it, just give me a vodka martini, after I ordered the vodka martini, my vodka sour all of a sudden appearred (it was surprisingly very good). So, yeah, the whole drink scenario bugged the crud out of me a bit.

The waiter came by a couple of times to ask how things were-nothing out of the ordinary.

As for 'Italian schtick' mentioned above, I have no idea what that is supposed to mean and I am Italian. Umm, so i am going to say no, there was none of that.
  • I want to try this place because the food sounds good - especially the mozzerella appetizer and the pasta with pancetta.

I would not be happy with so many waiters, etc. interrupting the meal or with the verbal wine list. I want to see years, prices, etc. Nothing like ordering something like a special and finding it to be way more expensive than you expected.
  • Yeah, I hate when restaurants give the specials verbally but don't say how much something is. If there is a special i find interesting, I will ask how much that particular one is, but, i hate doing that. They should just say the price.

They should just say the price. You don't want to look cheap and ask the price of everything, but you also don't want find out you just ordered a $30 pasta dish while the rest of the pasta dishes are ~$15.
  • Since so many people on this board were having dinner at this place on Saturday night, were any of the you interracial couple with the little girl who had the great curly hair? She was sitting in a high chair and she was just so cute eating her pasta.
  • I spoke to the owner and gave him the feedback from the board. He said he's having a hard time getting good help. He's interested and open to feedback...he spent a lot of time getting the restaurant ready and he wants to be successful
  • I personally didn't find anything wrong with the help, my waiter was very nice as a matter of fact. In my case, it is some of the practices of the restaurant. IE, not having a printed wine list, not stating the prices of the specials, etc..
  • i agree... i, in fact, had no direct contact with any of the other help (who were very nice when we came in and when we left.) it was the owners who kept coming over to our table (again and again) saying how delicious and beautiful everything was, cracking lots of jokes, speaking in italian and continually asking what else we wanted to order (to the point of being a bit uncomfortably pushy)...

again, we'd definitely go back at some point... the food was delicious... it's just that the owners were a wee too invasive and perform-y for our tastes... and if that's the vibe they are going for that is one thing... but then i'd rather save my money and go to al di la where i can eat without being interrupted at nearly every bite while being able to relax and enjoy a terrific meal.
  • Just wanted to do a little update because I LOVE the food at this place!

Went there last night for dinner and service is definitely smoother now. first of all, yay! they had an actual wine list! Secondly, instead of the way it was last time where there were too many people serving us, last night we had our waiter, Nat, and one other gentleman who brought the food out, refilled the olive oil dish, etc.. The owner came over to say hi and I was shocked to see that he remembered us from a couple of weeks ago (I had ordered a drink the first time i went that took the bartender a while to make-maybe that is why i stood out in his mind). The service was attentive and friendly but not hovering. Our waiter was really nice, funny and had good food suggestions and was from Albania (i have a friend from Albania and love when I meet someone else from there).

The food was just as amazing as it was the first time. We had a buffalo mozzarella appetizer and it had to be the best mozzarella I have ever had in my life! So creamy, oy! We had a second appy which they called shrimp scampi that came with some fresh crab meat on top-it was so fresh, so tasty, just wonderful!

We shared a pasta (got the one with the pancini and onions again just because we couldn't get it out of our minds from last time). for dinner hubby had steak in a mushroom sauce with mashed potatoes that came with a side of escarole. I had brazzini, which is a sea bass. It was cooked in a light sauce and came with mussels and clams and some shrimp. for dessert we shared a cappucino and a piece of chocolate/almond torte that came with vanilla ice cream. all the dishes are large enough to easily share.

I am just so thrilled with this place! Beautiful inside and the food is just amazing! I already can't wait to go back.
  • A) I'm hungry now
    B) glad to see they have fixed the service problems
    C) I'll add it to my list of places to try
  • You seriously have got to go Flexi! the food will kill you, bring BP with you too.

that mozzarella dish alone is enough to make me want to go
  • Went to this place last Friday. Eh. I wouldn't rush back.
  • i know it's gotten some raves here, but the absolutely horrible decor both in the sign outside and from peaking in the window look dreadful. it's also totally empty every single time i've walked by. even when other restaurants lately seem to have picked up in business...

it looks like an italian restaurant in disneyworld.
  • the outside sign is horrible, but I seriously don't get the issue with the inside. it's just basic brick wall decor, what is wrong with the inside?

Old Time Brooklyn, you didn't like the food?
