cablevision - keeps jacking prices! any other choices?
my cablevision bill keeps getting higher and higher, and i feel like there's nothing i can do about it since I can't seem to find any other providers that will service my block (st. johns b/t washington and underhill). comcast doesnt, time warner doesnt, verizon fios doesnt......are there other companies that i'm missing? my internet went up $15 in the last month, my cable went up some, and i keep getting these weird prorated charges because the new rates go into effect midway through my billing cycles so it feels like i'm constantly paying double.
sucks!
any advice?

You should call them and make sure everything's on the up and up. As far as I know, there is no pro-rating. You pay for the month in advance and if there's any On Demand from the previous month, they tack that on.
Is it possible you signed up for the special deal they had (I think it's just for the first year?) and now your year's up?
As for other companies, you (and me) are SOL. -
DirectTV and Dish Network are two other options. I'm pretty sure they serve all areas.
-
I'm on the same block and unless something has changed in the nearly 3 years that I've lived here there is nothing else. I think the only company you're missing is RCI, if I have that name correct. I checked with them all before moving.
That's weird about the internet...I'll have to check my bill too but I haven't noticed that. I canceled cable a long time ago. -
It's really annoying and frustrating. In the past i've been able to negotiate better rates by threatening to leave, but i'm afraid c-vision will call me on my bluff as I have nowhere else to take my business too. i wish i wasn't so addicted to comedy central and could quit cable....
my bill has gone up $40 in the last 2 months. i know times are tough but jeez. cable went up $10 and internet went up $15!!!! -
you should call them. i had just internet and cable and paid like $130 ... i was fucked by them 3 times on either them adding wrong charges or TWICE not showing up for an appointment THEY SCHEDULED. so i called and said i was dropped them, and they let me re-sign up for their "new customer" plan which is my cable, internet, AND now a phone for less than $100 a month.
I'd call and see what's up. It shouldn't go up without them telling you.. -
You could certainly switch to one of these...

And there is always dial-up. -
Subject: Cablevision
I feel your pain.
I had problems w/Cablevision several yrs ago when I moved from Park Slope, where I was very satisfied w/my Time Warner Cable service, to Bed-Stuy, where only Cablevision was available. I soon learned could not transfer my TWC service bcs, nonsensically, there was no free competition among cable companies. Instead Brooklyn is carved up into separate "territories," w/each section doled out to a particular company (or at least that was so at the time--though it sounds like not much has changed). Quite unfortunately, Cablevision had a monopoly on my then new neighborhood--and their piss poor service reflected as much.
After four installation appts w/Cablevision--two no shows, two where the tech came out, but couldn't figure out how to turn on the service (which completely flummoxed me bcs the previous tenant, a friend from whom I was subletting, had had her Cablevision service shut off all of week prior), and several patience-testing conversations w/ill-trained and lackadaisical reps and supervisors, I was complaining to a colleague who suggested I try a dish service. "Aren't they expensive?" I asked. "Not so much," he responded, flipping through his newspaper. "Look, here's an ad for DirecTV. Couldn't hurt to call."
So I did, and occasional inclement weather disruptions aside, I've been pretty satisfied ever since w/both DirecTV's viewing options as well as their customer service. Granted, I still pay more for cable than I think I should (there's a grassroots movement afoot to get cable companies to allow consumers to choose their channels and pay pro rata, rather than have to pay for four HBO's, three Showtimes and a bunch of other channels they never watch just to get a cpl of premium channels, but that's another subject.), but there was nothing more satisfying than being able to call up Cablevision to cancel appt #5, advising that I'd be going w/DirecTV instead.
Hah. Then, suddenly, the Cablevision rep said, "You don't have to do that," and started offering all kinds of incentives, escalation, etc., but by then, I was, like, "You know what--thanks for nothing. I'll take my chances w/DirecTV."
Good luck. -
wow, thanks BKBabe - I had Direct TV years ago when I lived in San Diego, and remember never having issues with it (granted there's no inclement weather there!) can i ask you - do you have internet? i assume you have a separate provider since Direct Tv doesn't offer internet....
thats the thing - i know if i have a real threat to cancel my account they'll offer me the moon, as they did you - but it's a somewhat empty threat unless i'm fully prepared to sign the dotted line for directTv or dish....
my other option as someone mentioned is signing up for their stupid triple play even though i have NO USE or need for a landline. yet somehow it will save me $40. go figure. -
Before you switch over (if you go with one of the satellite companies) is to make sure your LL will let you install a dish outside the building. My LL doesn't allow it, so I'm stuck with Cablevision.

Yes, I do have a separate internet provider, so you'll have to determine how that factor affects your options. (I'd like to get a pkg deal for svcs but shd be relocating to Crown Hts after the first of the year and am waiting to see which services are available there before I get all excited abt the prospect of bundling.)
And Whatchuwant is correct: I do recall having to get a letter from my landlord granting approval to have the dish attached to his property. (He was okay w/it. I drafted a simple letter w/the relevant info and he signed.) Apologies, but I totally forgot abt that important point. -
I had a problem with cablevision and they were being stubborn with me about compensation. I went with direct tv but kept optimum online. When I told cablevision I was cancelling the TV they couldn't throw enough deals at me. I wound up getting internet free for 3 months.....then I canelled when I had to pay again and went with FIOS.....I HATE CABLEVISION!!!!
-
I would have gotten FIOS if I could, but it is only Cablevision where I am. The guy who installed the cable/internet was close to on time and reasonably quick. But since the installers are all contracted out, it sounds like I was just lucky to get a good one. The internet started at $30 a month as a promotion and will go up to $45 next month, but I knew that when I got it. The cable is $50 after taxes for a middle-tier digital package.
The cable service is fine and has slightly more HD channels then what I had with Time Warner. The internet service, on the other hand, is fantastic. I get 10Mbps down and 2Mbps up, which is way better then the 8Mbps down and 768kbps up that I got with Time Warner. -
I'm in a similar situation where I feel handcuffed by Cablevision. I have no use for a landline but the triple play package actually comes out cheaper than just buying Cable & Internet. Prices for these services seem like they're getting pretty out of hand. Do others opt for the triple play over purchasing what they actually need?

For $9 a month you can get unlimited stream of movies at Netflix.com (with a 1 DVD a time rental)
Get HDTV or a Converter Box Purchased with a government subsidy at
https://www.dtv2009.gov/
OTA (over The Air) HDTV television works very well in Brooklyn - no "snow" and will eventually have more channels than analog --and channels are broadcasting - NOW
It's a pain in the @ss returning your cable boxes so you might consider mailing them back to CableVision like I did.
Cable TV is for Sports addicts or suckers.
If you have a landline, cancel it and get Skype which is the most affordable VOIP, get a real phone number that you can make incoming and outgoing calls.
Get a prepaid phone and a phone card and make most of your phone call from the office and from Skype.
Eventually we will be able to cut a phone carrier out of the equation with Wimax and Skype on a wimax capable phone.
Since you will be using your PC more, be sure to get a smart surge protector (perhaps at Amazon) so you don't wind up paying ConEd more money.
Cheers! -
or, freeload of a local wifi site (I've used the Brooklyn Museum's as my only connection for the last 3 years) ...and just pay for TV. I'd recommend direct TV
-
Is it really so consistent using someone else's wifi (I'm quite close to the museum as well)? My computer is pretty old and not a laptop, so I really never considered getting a wireless card until internet became so expensive--under my old amazing Time Warner package it was a pretty small portion but with Cablevision it's $49.95. I guess I'm afraid to switch to wireless (and cancel out of Cablevision completely, as I don't have cable) because I've never had a single moment of getting on my computer and NOT finding myself connected, while piggybacking off someone else's wifi strikes me as iffy.
-
I have 3 free wifi's to choose from.
The museum works 95% of the time, when it doesn't I use the others. It's not a speedy connection, but its a free one -
I think I'm too much of an internet addict to take "not speedy but free"...just wish Cablevision were even $10 less than it is. I feel like just a couple years ago $39.99 considered the top end for internet price. Rawr.
-
once they have you, you are theirs
-
Think Cablevision may be feeling the pinch. I just called and canceled my cable tv and landline (yup, I was another triple-play sucker) after asking if there was anything they could do for me price-wise. The rep kind of laughed at that...[silence]...Here's where you return the box and remote (sounding all weary and resigned).
Jeez.
I feel bad for the guy, who may have liked his job back when he had the freedom to give someone a (pre-approved, but whatever) deal? -
Yeah, they are very very lucky that they are the only company with Kung Fu HD (remastered Shaw Brothers!!!).
Otherwise I would have dumped their ass already. We had a horrible first month with internet only half the time and interference on all the channels. I had to call them constantly until they finally fixed the problem with the main box on our street. And it was equally painful to get them to give me a credit for the all the bad service. I had to go into a lengthy lecture detailing all the issues until finally they took $50 off.
If they ever drop that Kung Fu channel I'm definitely canceling. -
My bill was around $160 last month (cable, internet, & phone). It is painful (and our signal is also weak). We live on Prospect btwn. Grand & Classon -- Time Warner gets half our block, Cablevision the other. Sadly, I'm two houses away from TW.
Does anyone know how these neighborhood monopolies in Brooklyn were granted?? Is there a rate commission we can complaint to?? Or City Counsel person?? -
First off, the triple play initial offering is given by all major cable companies and it never says this is going be permanent, c'mon did you seriously believe you were going to pay $90 a month for all three services indefinitely?
Secondly I have to say I've been happy with Cablevision/Optimum as my sole provider of internet/phone/cable, and have been for nearly 5 years now. I personally don't think FIOS has that much more to offer when comparing apples to apples. I need my broadband to up and fast everyday since I work remotely for my employer and have to say I've had minimal outages in those 5 years.
One thing I definitely agree with is the lack of choice in providers, it is very much like a monopoly if you want a single provider for all 3 services. -
I had Cablevision at one time but I was not happy with them and went without cable for a long time. Finally, I got Direct TV and even though I think they are not the best there is, they are better then anything I can get in Crown Heights. My internet is through Verizon as well as my landline. All in all it is about 130.00 per month for my land line, internet and cable but what can you do when you don't have many options. I would look into Direct TV and see if there options are better for you, it may not be but it is worth a look. The only thing I can say about Direct TV is that if your landlord does not allow it to be hooked up on the roof, I have seen various other options that are available. It is up to you if you want to deal with those options though.

Subject: not easy
Thanks to everyone for helpful advice. Hubby and I have been without cable since we moved here four years ago. But I'm pregnant and feeling the need for more channels to entertain me during late night feedings that are in the near future.
We've got Verizon internet and phone. We don't love them, but the service has been good.
Looking like we might do best with Direct TV, unless TW services our half of the block. Prospect between Grand and Classon, closest to Grand. -
Has anyone had an issue with ALL their Cablevision services going down for hours on end? Every time I call there is an electronic msg saying the problem has been reported and they are working to fix it. The problem seems to coincide with rainy weather.
I signed up a year ago for triple play and they just jacked it up another fifty bucks. I was thinking of trying Direct TV, but I've seen notices warning other tenants to remove their equipment from the roof. Does anyone know if they will install it on a balcony? -
Last time I had Direct TV, they did affix it to the wall right outside my window. I lucked out and had a clear shot to the satellite from there. It all depends on that. I don't know if there's a way to check ahead of time to see if you'll have a clear path from your balcony. Anyone know if there's a way to get the degree on the compass and angle for the satellite at a particular location?
-
Anyone else lose cable on Dean between 6th and Carlton (or close by) this a.m.?
-
I saw a fleet (ok, a fleet of 3) of Verizon trucks on Sterling @ Butler today. Two looked like cable-laying trucks...maybe some FIOS action in the works??
