urgent help needed to trap a cat to bring to vet

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I've had a stray living in my backyard the past few years and I suppose we've become attached to each other. At first I thought she might be feral but over a long amount of time she has become a good pal, sometimes even instigating me to pet her. But anything out of the ordinary, any movement, and she's gone for awhile. She's very pretty - I think maybe she used to be abused. And very observant and smart.

She does seem to be spayed, and today she is now sitting outside my back door coughing harshly. But if I go to the outside she runs back. What I need help with is trapping her - any attempt on my part in the past failed. Even if I use food for bait, which she now expects from me at least once a day. What I'd like to do is just get her to a vet, and adpot her fully.

Not to mention that the other night I saw a raccoon in my backyard.

I have tried slope street cats but they are too busy and im worried that if i wait for training it'll be too late - if anyone knows anyone or any service that would help me trap her I'd be willing to pay a fee. Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Poor kitty. I don't know how to help you catch it. I'm not sure if Sean Casey does this type of work, but maybe he can refer you to somebody. Here's his website:

Please come back and give us an update.
  • A few years back I was able to trap a cat left in a closed deli in Union Square. I borrowed a live trap from the 13th. One of the ESU trucks had one. I don't think it's standard equipment but It's worth checking and also at fire stations. I covered most of the trap, put tuna fish in the back and made sure there was no other food source. I don't think the traps are that expensive if you have to buy one and I'm sure it will come in handy on this blog given the number of cats that make their way to PS.
  • FYI everyone, a super nice lady who help feral cat rescue projects is giving me advice. I really can't stress enough, these people help others out on the weekend merely because they love cats.

You know, for all the navel gazing obsessiveness about Park Slope, between the help I'm getting on this, and the morning and late night of November 4th everyone outside my neighborhood can pogue mahone. I couldn't love this neigborhood more, lately.
  • I'm not poguing your hon unless you pog ma thon first!

Oh yeah - good luck with the kitty trapping. I think it's great that you care enough. :)
  • Aww thats so awesome that you're finally gonna take this kitty in. I hope you figure out whats wrong with her and she works out as a housecat.

I've taken in 3 cats from my backyard, one who was abused and lives with me now. Another one is with my friend, and the 3rd I couldn't help - she just couldn't adjust to home life. Hopefully this kitty can learn to trust again and enjoy a pampered home life!
  • Otakuhouse, what you're doing is great. Please let us know how it turns out.
