Air purifiers

Who's got em, how do you like em, and what brand is it? I'm starting to think my chronic stuffed-upness is from dust or mold or something in my apt because I can't seem to shake it. For the record I've got a 300 sq foot studio so it would be awesome if anyone has advice on one that would cover that amount of space.

  • I've used various models over the years and find they don't do shit - except make noise.
  • it's expensive, but i have a venta.

it's an air purifier and humidifier in one. it does an outstanding job. i've had mine for about 4 years now...it does not need filters.

i used one of those 20% coupons to bed bath and beyond to buy mine, because i think the one for the size studio we have is around 250 bucks before the discount.

i've found it WELL worth the investment. it has lasted years, looks brand new still and doesn't require 20 dollar replacement filters every couple months.

plus it does an AMAZING job with air purification...
  • I definitely recommend a humidifier. I've had mixed results with every sort of antihistamine under the sun. I've been stuffy as all hell b/c of the dry heat in my apt. and office... invest wisely though. Ones that boil the water are good but use a lot of electricity. You can also find ones that create moisture ultrasonically that have built in antimicrobial doo-dads. They use a lot less electricity. Both manage to kill most of the mold spores and other crap that might irritate your sinuses. There are another kind out there called, "cool mist". Theyre usually the cheapest, but dont bother. Its just a fan blowing air over a paper wick. Makes a lot of noise with little results. Here's to a happier nose!
  • check out Austin Air. They are not cheap but hey work well.

air filters are one of those things where you get what you pay for.. good ones will costs a couple hundred $$. there are sites that have good reviews.

    good luck!

PS.. i developed allergies to dust, mold etc after my fist 3 or 4 years in the city... it's fairly common according to my allergist.
  • I second the Venta. I've had mine for a year now and I love it. And in addition to being a humidifier it also purifies the air, which I need in my apartment which I share with my hubby, a dog, and two cats!
  • I second the Venta. I wasn't sold on it but was given one as a gift (and yes use one of those Bed Bath coupons that are everywhere!).

It's not great in the summer when we have the windows wide open, but when we're closed up (mostly) for the winter, my sleep is significantly better because I don't wake up constantly with dry allergy throat and I credit the venta.

Mine seems relatively quiet, and the noise it does make is kind like white noise to me. It's certainly not loud enough that you need to up the volume on alarm clocks like with the humidifiers I had as a kid.

I bet in that space you could run it 24/7 and easily notice a difference. The only pain to me is refilling it, which is an annoyance with probably any similar product.

I have not used any others so no comparisons for you.
  • This has been discussed here before, and as before, I wholeheartedly recommend the Venta. Even my animals love the Venta - they sit near it when we unpack it and first start runnin' it in the fall.
  • I saw some at Costco the other day. Don't remember the brand.

    Not great reviews... http://www.amazon.com/Oreck-Purifier-Tabletop-XL-Professional/dp/B0015627UE/ref=pd_sbs_k_1

One customer gave it 5 stars and a great review.
We got ours in 2005 and it still runs perfectly. We clean ours once a week though , easy peesy.

One customer gave it 3 out 5 stars and a bad review.

The 3rd reviewer never bought the oreck and was just writing to say that he will not buy the oreck anymore after reading that bad review.
  • You could just turn on your a/c. Set the temp to room temp and it'll draw the air through the filter without using any coolant.
  • Finally got a Venta air purifier -- everything I read said water only, except it comes with packets of "wash" that you put in with the water every couple of weeks. It comes with a couple sample packets. Do you Venta users keep using this stuff or what? If you do, where do you get it?

  • Pitu, I have one. I think the packets have something to prevent mold growth. When I forget to add one for a long time, ours looks really nasty. I pick up the packets at Bed, Bath and Beyond when I'm near one. I haven't looked at it in a while but the packets might just be alcohol.
  • I got my Venta and a box of the wash at Pinchik last year.
  • Thanks OQ. I think they are some sort of detergent -- didn't smell like alcohol or vinegar, just clear thick goop with a non-scented chemically air. I would have gotten spares while I was there if I had known. In the meantime I have found out - if anyone is wondering - Target doesn't sell Venta stuff.
  • It'll pull more gunk out of the air with the fluid than without... and I'm glad for the packets! It used to be just a bottle full of the stuff that you had to measure out.

    Excellent, thx.
Thx all. It's really making a difference already -- allergic houseguest, meet furry beast!
  • You can get the Venta Airwasher and packets at J & R on 7th ave btw Union and Pres. It's very quiet and does the job.
