Ring Appraisals

Is there a trusted jeweler in the neighborhood where I can get a ring appraised?

I appreciate the info.

Thanks,
-anthony

  • are you getting married? are we invited?

    :-)
  • are you selling jewelry due to the economic downturn?

    ...or just getting something insured?
  • Do you need the appraisal for insurance purposes or is it a piece you are thinking of buying or selling?
  • Yup, I'm getting hitched (as long as I don't screw it up over the next few months). I ordered the ring from a store in Charleston, and I'd like to get it appraised to make sure it's of the quoted quality, and I need to do it for insurance reasons.

And after that's taken care of it's a few frantic months of checking out caterers, venues, bands, florists, etc. (open to all suggestions, and will definitely be running searches on this board for past discussions).

    Thanks,
    -anthony
  • If you need to do it for insurance reasons ask your insurance compnay what appraisals they will accept. There are a couple of gemological certifications
  • Take it to the jeweler on 7th Ave & 8th St.
They appraised my wife's ring for insurance purposes.
    The cost was $50.

    Good luck and congrats.

Didn't you once write that we were like family to you? I'm looking forward to one of those double envelopes with the fancy caligraphy.....

P.S. If you invite me, its only fair that you invite Flexi
  • i know it's not in the 'hood, but i took mine to macy's on 34th and was happy with their service (though it's first-come, first-served so go early).
  • I work right near Macy's, so if they do appraisals that might be the easiest place to hit up. However, depending on what time I get out of the office tonight, maybe I can run down to the jeweler on 7th & 8th. I'd rather spend my cash in the neighborhood.

  • I would not get anything appraised in the diamond district, purely because they usually appraise jewelry at a much higher price then it actually is, as an unspoken favor to those, who are trying to sell it to you. That is not really an issue, the issue is that insurance companies are very suspicious of such appraisals.

Although, I once went in with my friend, who went in to appraise her engagement ring, and the old guy just refused to appraise it, saying "you can't put a price on love" . Needless to say, she never appraised it.

Yup they do them. I can't remember which floor, but it's next to the wigs. For their fee, they take a certain percent of the value they appraise it for (which I hear is not uncommon). I don't remember what the percent is... you may want to call and ask.

Also, make sure you understand what you will get from your insurance company if the ring is lost or stolen. Some types of policies will only provide you with a ring that is similar to what you have, but worth the same value. I have a separate policy that will allow for an exact replacement (they send me a check for the value). Since my ring is custom, I don't want something like it, I want to go back to my jeweler and get the exact same thing.

damn, and i thought it was for my birthday.
  • Thanks, VQ. Unfortunately, if the ring is lost, it's lost for good. I went vintage, and found a turn of the century ring at an antique/consignment store down south. I considered bying something new, but this one just had a lot of character that I wasn't able to find in anything else I saw.

Wow, it sounds wonderful. Take some good, close up pics. If anything happens to it, you can have a replica made.

    Good luck with everything!
  • Macy's is great if you cannot get to the neighborhood. He appraised my diamond for much more than we paid for it.

    Good luck!
  • Anthonycm, if you bring the ring to the guy at 7th Ave and 8th Street, do not under any circumstances leave it there.

I brought him a Longines watch my father (now deceased) gave me, for repair of the innards. When he gave it back to me, two of the numbers had been pried off the face of the watch! He blamed it on his brother and said he'd make me new numbers. He did, but they do not match the rest of the numbers on the face, and the watch is ruined!!!

So if he cannot appraise it while you wait, take it away with you.
  • booklaw, this story basically tells me not to even bring a ring there because the stone could be baited and switched. (and i'm glad i know this because i was going to get my grandmother's wedding ring fixed there, and now i need to find a new place.)
  • I have been bringing jewelry to the guy on 7th Avenue for about 18 years now and while he might have messed up booklaw's watch, I believe he is far from a crook! I have stopped going there though because I was not happy with some work he did for me on a ring I brought him, it was just a messy job and I had to bring it elsewhere to be fixed.

But, if you feel better, go to Garry Jewellers on 5th Avenue, Michael there is a great guy-it used to be his father's store.
  • Well, a bit late now, but thanks for all the advice/warnings. I went there after work last night and all went well. I didn't (wouldn't have, anyway) leave the ring overnight, and it's now sitting at home, waiting for us to get resized.

Anyway, one thing off my list of 1,000 to get done in order to get this wedding shindig taken care of.
  • Has she said "yes" yet?

    Pics or it didn't happen!

Or, just at least pics of that beautiful ring....
