Looking to move east from Jewish Hospital. Impressions? — Brooklynian

Looking to move east from Jewish Hospital. Impressions?

I am looking to get a place w/my gf...

We want a 2BR for less than 1500. It's either here or Inwood it looks like. I know CH is a block by block neighborhood, but coming from the Jewish Hospital complex how safe is the area between Atlantic/EP on avenues like Nostrand, Rogers, etc.?

I will be fine... she however is from Missouri & currently lives in Greenpoint. Sometimes she comes home late from events at work, and would have to walk home around 9-10PM. Granted, I know the eastern end of 'Prospect Heights' gets pretty hairy every now and then, but is OK for the most part.

We will check the area out on our own, I live close by. But we just wanted impressions.

Also, how is the area south of EP? I have a friend who lives down there and her block is very nice.

Comments

  • I live on Brooklyn Ave and love it!

I prefer New York and Brooklyn Aves to Nostrand/Bedford/Rogers.

I live closer to Atlantic than Eastern Parkway, though.
  • I live between Nostrand and New York, and I love my neighborhood and neighbors! That being said, I would stay nearer to Eastern Parkway, rather than Atlantic, if possible, and not go much past Kingston ave. I frequently walk my dogs late at night with no problems.
  • I live like a block from brooklynleather and love the area as well. I also come home very late at night most days (past 12am, sometimes 1am) and feel fine. Granted, I'm a guy and have lived in worse areas so its all kind of a relative matter. I do see a number of single women waking home from the trains though, for what it's worth.

New York and Brooklyn Aves between Atlantic and Eastern parkway are pretty good. If you want to be by the A/C, Atlantic is the way to go, 2,3,4,5 for Eastern Parkway. If you want to be more activity check out around Bedford/Rogers near Eastern Parkway. The prices I'm sure will be much higher though.
  • Yeah, this area is also full of families which is nice. It's also still pretty affordable here and our apartment is HUMONGOUS! (2 bedroom, 1,200 sq ft!)

Sweet, just the kind of post I wanted to see. I know it gets crunk out there but there will always be crime. There was a carjacking + police shooting around the corner from me and I feel very safe. And there are even corners in "Prospect Heights" I avoid (St Marks & Grand for example) so I guess it's not too bad.

The apts are so cheap over there, that's why I'm weary.

Are there any cheap parking garages?
  • I feel like there is less crime here than other blocks I've lived on FOR SURE.

There is a parking garage a few blocks away. Motorcycle is $125/mo.

My apartment isn't that cheap but it isn't over 2 grand either. It is "less gentrified" but solid working/middle class families and incredible apartments.

BTW what's the drama at St Marks and Grand? So far I have only heard gunshots here once and apparently they came from NY Ave and Union so not even really over here.
  • The one area I'd stay away from in Crown Heights is north of St. Marks/Bergen St. West of Bedford/Rogers. That area quickly turns into a wasteland of empty warehouses and is probably the only place I know around the neighborhood I'm afraid to walk down at night (just over it being so desolate).

Those blocks are all auto repair type places. I have walked down there at night, it doesn't seem bad. I like the nabe closer to EP than Atlantic though.

    Any more insights?
  • Brower Park is the historic heartland of the best that Crown Heights North has to offer, architecturally. Anywhere within three blocks of Brower is going to be interesting, though going beyond Albany Ave might not be the best idea. Anecdotally, I hear that the park itself is not the place to be after dark but, frankly, neither is Prospect Park. Nostrand Ave is very busy and while the folks that hang out there might not be to your taste, they generally keep things down and don't interfere with folks too much. And there presence deters the typical mugger.
And a floorthrough in a brownstone can be easily had for $1,500 in that area.
  • my girlfriend and i live on kingston and rutland, so we're pretty south.. it's realllllly reallly relaxed down here, and everybody seems to know everybody.. rent is dirt cheap, and we get home late (2:00-3:00 AM-ish) on a fairly regular basis and have never had any problems.. a lot of my friends have been moving into the area as well.. best of luck
  • 2 cents.... move south towards Lefferts Garden and the B and Q at prospect park. We are equidistant from the 2,3,4,5 and B,Q which has been great. There are TONS of apts between EPW and Empire along Bedford, Franklin and Rogers.
  • I also liked Lefferts Gardens as an option when I was looking to move from PH (ended up in Clinton Hill though). There are lots of big, huge apartments over there and it's quiet and convenient.

I have a friend who lives near Kingston and Pacific and it seems okay. I personally prefer the C over the 3/4, but I think the Q trumps all.

Damn, from driving up and down Bedford I had the impression that Empire Blvd was rough as hell. I totally forgot about the area down there, that would have been a good look.

    Anyways we found a beautiful pre-war 1BR, huge rooms, $1400, Bergen & Nostrand/NY.
